Colossians 2:20-21 "If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the universe, why do you live as if you still belonged to the world? Why do you submit to regulations, "Do not handle,Do not taste, Do not touch"?  We are raised up in the freedom of forgiveness and love for one another.  The study writer of this today said  "Because we belong to Christ, we are free to take risks, embrace cultural diversity, stand up to injustice, and become healers and peacemakers."

On this day
2009 - I was having a bad time at work with the boss's son.  When the boss offered I go on lay off for a few weeks I jumped at it.  Nicole decided it would be a good time to look for a new job and bought me a new suit to go on interviews.  I did and I was offered a few jobs but the economics times weren't good and the pay was lower than I was getting.  I should have kept looking.

1876 - Alexander Bell at 29 patented the first telephone. He was a Scot.  Wish I thought of that!

Parenting
I feel like I take responsibility for things that have happened in my life, to me.  Sure there are unavoidable incidents that happen to all of us, but I don't spend a lot of time blaming someone else for my problems.  I usually try to figure them out and get on with it.  To say that someone else is at blame for my problems is giving them power over my life and my decisions and I can't have that.  For example, I worked for a difficult boss for a lot of years, it was my choice to stay in that job and put up with him.  I could have walked away.  Don't play the blame game.

The Sea of Okhotsk

Geography[edit]

Shiretoko National Park on the Sea of Okhotsk coast of HokkaidoJapan
The Sea of Okhotsk covers an area of 1,583,000 square kilometres (611,000 sq mi), with a mean depth of 859 metres (2,818 ft) and a maximum depth of 3,372 metres (11,063 ft). It is connected to the Sea of Japan on either side of Sakhalin: on the west through the Sakhalin Gulf and the Gulf of Tartary; on the south, through the La Pérouse Strait.
In winter, navigation on the Sea of Okhotsk becomes difficult, or even impossible, due to the formation of large ice floes, because the large amount of freshwater from the Amur River lowers the salinity which results in raising the freezing point of the sea. The distribution and thickness of ice floes depends on many factors: the location, the time of year, water currents, and the sea temperatures.
Depths
With the exception of Hokkaido, one of the Japanese home islands, the sea is surrounded on all sides by territory administered by the Russian Federation.

Maybe not the best place for a cruise but good info.

Enjoy the day!  Make it memorable!  Happy Birthday Lisa, Gregg and Cathy!

Pastor's sermon was about the prodigal son.  You know the story, the son asks the father for his inheritance and goes off and squanders it on fast living and ends up in the mud with the pigs.  Maybe you even know someone this happened to - similarly.  The father lets him go.  When things get bad and the son is broke he goes back home to see if his father will hire him as help.  The father is thrilled to have him home and gives him back his entire inheritance.  This story is about Lent and us and God.  Come back home to God, He has great things for you.

On this day
2006 --My friend Patrick picked me up and we went to Port Sanilac for our friend, Ty's, Dad's funeral.  We stopped after at the Dad's old farmhouse to see what shape it is in.  That was 10 years ago, we have a hard time getting rid of our parents stuff.

1836 - The thirteen-day siege of the Alamo by Santa Anna and his army ended. The Mexican army of three thousand men defeated the 189 Texas volunteers. This was not a fair fight. They should have had a Delta force and a few Navy Seals to even it out.

Parenting
Most parents, if they had a child they knew was "wayward" would not give them their inheritance, first because they aren't dead yet and to make sure the child doesn't kill themselves with it.  Most parents do welcome their children back after they have made stupids decisions and hope they won't do it again. There are those families that never see an end to youthful poor decision making and have to constantly be faced with the returning remorseful, but not necessarily cured offspring.  We are not God, we don't always keep forgiving, but usually never stop loving.  If you know someone with this situation, say a prayer for them.

Sea of Okhotsk
The Sea of Okhotsk (RussianОхо́тское мо́реtr. Okhotskoye MoreIPA: [ɐˈxotskəɪ ˈmorʲɪ]Japaneseオホーツク海 Ohōtsuku-kai) is a marginal sea of the western Pacific Ocean,[1] lying between the Kamchatka Peninsula on the east, the Kuril Islands on the southeast, the islandof Hokkaido to the south, the island of Sakhalin along the west, and a long stretch of eastern Siberian coast (including the Shantar Islands) along the west and north. The northeast corner is the Shelikhov Gulf. The sea is named after Okhotsk, the first Russian settlement in the Far East

I walked this morning, outside for vitamin d and fresh air.  I walked behind my snowblower, but it still counts right?

Colossians 2:16-17  This is a repeating theme I am hearing this week.  Pastor talked about this at Bible study on Thursday morning while reading Romans.  It is important because we separate ourselves from one another based on what food we eat, or where we worship or what and how we celebrate.  The important thing is Christ, who he is and what he did for ALL of us.  We are united in that love that we share from God.  Celebrate unity!

On this day
2005 It was the day after my gall bladder surgery, not a big deal anymore, kind of like getting a mole removed.  So on this day I had friends bring food, send cards and call and visit.  Now that's important.

1624 - In the American colony of Virginia, the upper class was exempted from whipping by legislation.  I join the outcry on this one.

Family
Not a March 5 that goes by that I don't remember my kid brother Mark's birthday, which is today.  It has been 30 years, he would have been 59 today.  He was a juvenile diabetic and died of a heart attack at 29.  It was all preventable, kind of.  He could have taken better care of himself and had better access to better drugs and information, but that isn't what happened.  That health issue is accompanied by depression and quite often feeling ill.  Two things responsible for each other.  I choose to remember what a cute child he was, his great sense of humor and his deep faith in God.  Rip Mark Alan.

Mark in the middle.

SEA OF OKHOTSK
SEALS, SEABIRDS AND A LEGACY OF SORROW
Perhaps no other sea in the world has witnessed as much human suffering and misery as the Sea Okhotsk. Between 1932 and 1953 it is estimated that over 3 million prisoners (the vast majority of them innocent) were transported across the Sea Okhotsk to the Gulags of the Kolyma Goldfields. It is estimated that only five hundred thousand of those prisoners survived to make the journey home. The town and port of Magadan were built to process these prisoners.  Sad but important to know I think as long as we are here.

Enjoy the day!  Make it memorable!  Happy Birthday Mark!

I started the day with abs and arms and will follow up with snow blowing.  My snowblower is a monster and even if it does have reverse on it, I still have to turn the thing which is a workout.  Wish me luck.

Colossians 2:13-15  This is Paul telling us that God forgave us when we were still buried in sin and not living by the laws.  "He set this aside, nailing it the the cross."  Our sins, our law breaking were nailed to the cross with Jesus Christ in forgiveness.  Can you see how much this awesome God loves us?  Thank him.

On this day
2004 -  I took Roxanne the cole slaw.  I had to look back and forward to see what that was about.  It was pretty random.  So, I was in the choir that year and they had served dinner the night before and I made cole slaw.  So the left overs went to Rox.  Note to self - Rox likes coleslaw.

1908 - The New York board of education banned the act of whipping students in school. Wow!!! and we wonder where kids learn violence!

Parenting
If you are a normal parent, like the ones I know, you can't stay mad at your child long or forever.  I do not ever remember spanking my kids, time out and restrictions yes but never physical abuse.  It seems to me the ones that were physically abused went on to bigger or worse behaviors before they actually quit.  What do you think?  C'mon I know you have opinions here.  Think of God, rather than punishing us time and time again, put it all on Jesus, once and for all.

Sea of Okhotsk  Magadan

History[edit]

Magadan was founded in 1930 in the Magadan River valley,[15] near the settlement of Nagayevo. During the Stalin era, Magadan was a major transit center for prisoners sent to labor camps. From 1932 to 1953, it was the administrative center of the Dalstroy organization—a vast and brutal forced-labor gold-mining operation and forced-labor camp system. The town later served as a port for exporting gold and other metals mined in the Kolyma region.[19] Its size and population grew quickly as facilities were rapidly developed for the expanding mining activities in the area. Town status was granted to it on July 14, 1939.[citation needed]
Magadan was temporarily transformed into a Potemkin village to mark an official visit by U.S. Vice-President Henry Wallace in May 1944.[citation needed] He took an instant liking to his secret policeman host, admired handiwork done by prisoners, and later glowingly called the town a combination of Tennessee Valley Authority and Hudson's Bay Company. Wallace's collaborative stance towards the Soviet Union discouraged the Democratic Party of the United States from renominating him as vice president later in the summer of 1944, helping lead to the selection of Harry Truman in his place.

Got a half hour of walking in the gym at church before Bible Study.  I have been promising to do this since the beginning of the year and finally made it.  I have to build up my walking again.  After being diagnosed with COPD last spring my breathing needs to be built up.  Not giving in to it.

Romans chapter 14  This is what the Bible study was about at church.  I enjoy Pastor Sean's way of doing a study, unfortunately for some (maybe) he has a similar sense of humor to mine.  St Paul wrote the letter to the Romans, for the most part.  This chapter is about who is right in what meats can be eaten, or what habits, rules, etc. must be obeyed.  As Pastor said, this was the early church and that's all they could talk about?  and argue about?  There are so many other more important things and we should spend more time on agreement.  I saw this chapter largely about acceptance of one another and living for the greater good of the church.

On this day
2002 - Nicole went to basketball and then to her friend Maddy's gymnastics performance and then had dinner at her friend Megan's.  I went to K-mart and then over to visit my friends Ty and Norma.  It was a Sunday.

1851 - The U.S. Congress authorized the 3-cent piece. It was the smallest U.S. silver coin. Bet its worth a lot more than .03 now!

Parenting
In looking back to on this day, there comes a time when your children get their own friends and places to go.  Fortunately for me I had my own friends and social activities so I wasn't "lost" when this happened.  The Sunday dinner at home kind of took a back seat to other things for a while.  I believe it is cyclical.  When they get a little older or just don't have anything else to do they wonder why or what happened to Sunday dinner.  I miss it now with Mom being gone, but I'm sure that will pass with warmer weather.  How about you?  Do you do family Sunday dinner?

There is so much to learn about the right way to exercise.  Make sure you do the correct stretches for whatever you work out at.  I did a set of hip stretches that I believe are designed for runners this morning.  They also help me with yoga and pilates moves.  I'm hoping to avoid hip replacement.

Get Faith
Colossians 2:9-10  "For in Christ the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in Christ, who is the head of every ruler and authority."  This is St Paul expounding on God taking on a human body in Christ Jesus and becoming human like you and I.  A miracle that this lowly form could contain something that awesome.  Makes you want to treat your body a little better doesn't it?  We are reminded that our bodies are temples to house the Spirit.

On this day
1998  Speaking of what we do to our bodies.  I worked all day, then went to the high school to watch Nicole's volley ball game and then to church for youth group, which I was the youth leader of at this time.  We demand a lot of ourselves sometime.

1998 - Images from the American spacecraft Galileo indicated that the Jupiter moon Europa has a liquid ocean and a source of interior heat. Out of this world!

Parenting
There are arguments to both sides of this subject.  I was an older mom, 38 when I had Nicole.  I think I was so excited and ready for this to happen in my life that I sincerely made the most of it and reaped the benefits of being so active with a child.  On the other hand, having children when you are younger means you can grow up with them, experience their lives on a more even level and of course be around for them longer, What do you think?

I am 69 now and still do some type of exercise everyday.  I believe that kids don't have aches and pains because they are more active.  Well, maybe not today's kids.  Unfortunately I have found that even after exercising for over 20 years, actually all my life - I still have aches and pains.  I push through them because I am convinced it would be worse if I didn't.  Oh, and I have been taking D3 as suggested by my female pharmacist and a yoga teacher.  It is better.  Keep moving out there!  Stay motivated!

    Get Faith
Colossians 2:8  "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the universe, and not according to Christ."  I think (as I am now doing) we all like to be the architect of our own faith.  If it doesn't work for us we shape it to what does.  Christ has better a better plan, unless you feel like you are your own God.  Don't let someone else or yourself take you hostage and lose out on the higher belief.  This deserves studying.

    On this day
1997   My ex-wife Kathy brought her daughter Rachelle over to spend the night with my Nicole.  Kathy and I were both ex-wives of Nicole and Aaron's dad, so I always just referred to her as my ex-wife, it just made sense.  The kids were happy with this amiable extended family and so were Kathy and I.

1999 - In Uganda, eight tourists were brutally murdered by Hutu rebels. No more hutus for us Nicole.

    Parenting
I'm disappointed.  One day I texted Nicole to remind her I was going to dinner with the girls and she would be in charge of dinner for her and Grandma.  I suggested maybe Olga's which we all love.  The text (as it often does) changed Olga's to hutus.  We always kid, up till now, about having hutus when we can't think of what we want for dinner.  After today, it just isn't funny anymore.
