Looking for an indoor pool that I can exercise in.  My cousin that I had dinner with last night had been going to a local pool and says it is really helping with that sore, stiffy achy stuff seniors begin to feel.  You find something that works for you at your age!  It matters!

2014 Mom and I went to First English and stayed after church for the Autumn lunch they had and purchased pumpkins - probably sold by the youth group.  I wonder how long before these treasured memories of events that I had with Mom don't start me crying.  In the mean time - I am happy for all of the great memories and times I did share with her.  Call your parents today, or loved ones, it matters.

1810 - Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The royalty invited the public to attend the event which became an annual celebration that later became known as Oktoberfest. We owe a debt of gratitude to Ludwig and Therese for this ongoing celebration!  Ein Prosit!  

Cousins dinner
A group of us girls have been going to dinner once a month for over 20 years.  Last night five of my cousins and my friend Waynette and her cousin went out to a place called Penne Lane.  It is on Hall Road between Groesbeck and Gratiot, the old Luigi's.  The background music, although a little loud, was great and reminiscent of the the old movies.  The food was terrific!  Kathy and I both had the Eggplant Parmesan and said it was the best we had tasted.  Great bread and dipping oil and the service was great.  There are cozy booths if you want a romantic evening.  I give it a 5!  If you don't live in the area, well, I'm sorry.  Next review , next month November 15!

Suriname

The Maroons often raided plantations to recruit new members from the slaves and capture women, as well as to acquire weapons, food and supplies. They sometimes killed planters and their families in the raids; colonists built defenses, which were so important they were shown on 18th-century maps, but these were not sufficient.^[10]

The colonists also mounted armed campaigns against the Maroons, who generally escaped through the rain forest, which they knew much better than did the colonists. To end hostilities, in the 18th century the European colonial authorities signed several peace treaties with different tribes. They granted the Maroons sovereign status and trade rights in their inland territories, giving them autonomy. Again we learn that oppression leads to aggression.

I started today with some ballet.  Honestly, I'm not getting better at it and am very happy it is not in a studio setting.  My blinds are closed in the living room until I'm done.  The pelee's kill me, when did my knees get so angry at me?  You find something to do too, maybe make better choices.

It goes on to say that we should rejoice because our father in heaven loves a good party when we are happy and free of the oppression of sin!

2013  Was a beautiful fall day, so after Nicole and I went to church I dropped her off at the golf course where Don was waiting.  I went home and made chili (a fall favorite) and cupcakes.  When they got here we had dinner and a nice day of watching sports.

1776 - During the American Revolution the first naval battle of Lake Champlain was fought. The forces under Gen. Benedict Arnold suffered heavy losses. This has a name I remember.  eek. Reminds me of breakfast.

Suriname

In 1683, the Society of Suriname was founded by the city of Amsterdam, the Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck family, and the Dutch West India Company. The society was chartered to manage and defend the colony. The planters of the colony relied heavily on African slaves to cultivate, harvest and process the commodity crops of coffee, cocoa, sugar cane and cotton plantations along the rivers. Planters' treatment of the slaves was notoriously bad,^[9] and many slaves escaped the plantations.

With the help of the native South Americans living in the adjoining rain forests, these runaway slaves established a new and unique culture in the interior that was highly successful in its own right. They were known collectively in English as Maroons, in French as Nèg'Marrons (literally meaning "brown negroes", that is "pale-skinned negroes"), and in Dutch as Marrons. The Maroons gradually developed several independent tribes through a process of ethnogenesis, as they were made up of slaves from different African ethnicities. These tribes include theSaramaka, Paramaka, Ndyuka or Aukan, Kwinti, Aluku or Boni, and Matawai.  I have not heard a lot about this happening here, have you? and I wonder why not.  I'm referring to the slaves and the American Indian tribes.

1 Thessalonians 5:12-28  About appreciating those who do hold the church together while we are vacationing, golfing etc.  The Sunday School teachers, choir, worship assistants and of course the Pastors.  As in anything you know, there are always leaders and supporters, people that hold the program together and pray for all of us.  Vs 17 "Pray continually"  keep your communication open with God.

2012 This whole week was very difficult.  On return to work after going up north for my Godfather/Uncle Hank's funeral I walked into the boss introducing me to a girl that was my replacement.  After 19 years working there it was quite a surprise.  I could have walked out but I stayed the week and trained Cindy for the job, encouraging her a long the way with, "if I could stay here 19 years, you can do this".  She was "appalled" when she found out what had just happened.  She needed the job and I retired.  It was a strenuous week.  I decided to take the high road.


1987 - Tom McClean finished rowing across the Atlantic Ocean. It set the record at 54 days and 18 hours. This is what I felt like getting through the above week.

Beginning in the 16th century, French, Spanish, and English explorers visited the area. A century later, Dutch and English settlers established plantation colonies along the many rivers in the fertile Guiana plains. The earliest documented colony in Guiana was an English settlement named Marshall's Creek along the Suriname River.^[8]

Disputes arose between the Dutch and the English for control of this territory. In 1667, during negotiations leading to the Treaty of Breda, the Dutch decided to keep the nascent plantation colony of Suriname they had gained from the English. The English got to keep New Amsterdam, the main city of the former colony of New Netherland in North America on the mid-Atlantic coast. Already a cultural and economic hub in those days, they renamed it after the Duke of York: New York.  Trade offs in which the nicest lawn probably came into play.

Luke tells the story of the 10 lepers.  The language when the Bible was written has changed considerably.  Pastor talked about the difference in being healed, clean vs unclean and well. Jesus, when asked by the lepers to be healed, sent them to the priest and on the way they became clean, healed and finally well.  Jesus can heal diseases, cleanse your soul and make you well and forgiven all at the same time.  He died to heal your sins and make you well and fit for life with Him, now and then.

On this day
2011 - this day was the 80 degree day that we had last week this year.  I was finally healed, after being in the hospital 4 times and finally had the colectomy I needed.  Nicole was living in Chicago at the time but was home for the weekend, she went out to Pastor Beebe's church as she still does when she is home.  The more things change, it seems, the more the stay the same.

1776 - A group of Spanish missionaries settled in what is now San Francisco, CA. And opened a winery?  Needed something to celebrate the birth of a great nation!

Indigenous settlement of Suriname dates back to 3,000 BC. The largest tribes were the Arawak, a nomadic coastal tribe that lived from hunting and fishing. They were the first inhabitants in the area. The Carib also settled in the area and conquered the Arawak by using their superior sailing ships. They settled in Galibi (Kupali Yumï, meaning "tree of the forefathers") at the mouth of the Marowijne River. While the larger Arawak and Carib tribes lived along the coast and savanna, smaller groups of indigenous peoples lived in the inland rainforest, such as the Akurio, Trió, Warrau, and Wayana.  And opened up a canoe livery.  Let's go!

2006 -  I enjoy most sermons at church but occasionally one gets to me.  On this day it was about divorce, and I have two under my belt.  The Bible mentions divorce and its repercussions far more than other sins.  We have learned to live with divorce and largely forgive - not stone- those who have been through one.  I'm hoping people become more considerate and less judgemental on other issues that they see as "hail and brimstone" sins.  Remember, above reading from Luke.

Suriname

Etymology[edit]

This area was occupied by various cultures of indigenous peoples long before European contact, remnants of which can be found in petroglyphsites at Werehpai and other places in Suriname. The name Suriname may derive from a Taino (Arawak-speaking) indigenous people calledSurinen, who inhabited the area at the time of European contact.^[7]

When the territory was taken over by the Dutch, it became part of a group of colonies known as Dutch Guiana. Did a weight workout this morning.  Honestly if I get up and ache I have to move and weight lifting really helps those sore joints. Obviously, if you have serious joint damage you need to see a professional, but common arthritic aches always feel better when you move and strengthen them...and drink that water!!

Mark 3 13-19  This is where Jesus appointed the twelve disciples to take on the work of spreading the gospel.  The last one he appointed was Judas.  Do you wonder why, when, Jesus knew what would happen with Judas He even bothered to appoint him?  Think about that.  We are all disciples of Christ, coming from all different backgrounds but sharing the same belief and trust that God knows best.

2005 -  Mom and I went to my cousin Marylou's son Chad's wedding.  Today I see them celebrating their 11th anniversary on Facebook.  I love Facebook, I can keep up with all the offspring of my cousins and friends.  Chad and Stephanie had two little boys 3 years ago - Ryder and Jaxon and we all love to see those beautiful boys.  Life is a huge, on going story!  Keep reading - love your life.

I caught up on a lot of yard work yesterday that had been overlooked all summer, which was great exercise!  Today my back, arms, legs and especially my hands can attest to the exercise from yesterday.  Today Nicole and I will dig a hole, set in a board and cement it in to possibly fend off critters taking up home for the winter under my house.  This should be enough exercise for today, but because it is so beautiful, maybe a walk later, if I'm able.  How about you?  Find something to do!!

2 Chronicles 6:12-21 Tells us about the huge, beautiful temple that Solomon had built to glorify God. Solomon (in his wisdom) knew "The highest heavens....cannot contain you.  How much less this temple I have built."  I have heard many say that they don't need to go to church to believe in God, and that's true.  What our churches are for is celebrating our faith with one another and to gather together in prayer to a God that is huge, everywhere and all knowing.  It is a place to establish learning and fellowship with others who want to share our love for God.

2001 - Nicole was at school decorating for homecoming and I was at home plastering and painting the dining room.  Does it ever end?  I just had a friend do some plastering and painting in the dining room last week. (Notice I had someone else do it this time.)

Suriname

The people of Suriname are among the most diverse in the world, spanning a multitude of ethnic, religious, and linguistic groups.  With this kind of diversity I can't wait to look at the cuisine! Too bad Nicole didn't read this yesterday she could have won at Trivia.
