Romans 8:31  "What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?"  That is powerful isn't it?  Our God that has created us and everything that was ever on this world, our God who has led us through so much trial and tribulation, our God who entered this world in the body of Jesus Christ and saved us from ourselves - is for us.  Did you ever not believe that?  Of course, we have all had that loss of positivity at one time or another.  When you start doubting again, remember this verse.

On this day
2002  We never know when the seasons change in Michigan, look at this year and all the snow we had on the 11th of November, and then had to clean up leaves when it finally melted.  Back in 2002 and it was a Sunday, after church we cleaned the garage, put the patio furniture away and cleaned up the leaves.  Oh, then we got the Christmas decor down.  Mom came over and had dinner with us, and this might have been the year we took the picture of the three of us that I love.

Dec 1 Davis Cup Tennis, Paris: Mikhail Youzhny beats Paul-Henri Mathieu 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 to give Russia 3-2 win over France; only time in event history that a 2-set deficit turned around in a live 5th rubber of a Final.

20th century

The United States of America's intentions to influence the area (especially the Panama Canal construction and control) led to the separation of the Department of Panama in 1903 and the establishment of it as a nation.[91] The United States paid Colombia $25,000,000 in 1921, seven years after completion of the canal, for redress of President Roosevelt's role in the creation of Panama, and Colombia recognized Panama under the terms of the Thomson–Urrutia Treaty.[92] Colombia and Peru went to war because of territory disputes far in the Amazon basin. The war ended with a peace deal brokered by the League of Nations. The League finally awarded the disputed area to Colombia in June 1934.[93]
The Bogotazo in 1948
Soon after, Colombia achieved some degree of political stability, which was interrupted by a bloody conflict that took place between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, a period known as La Violencia ("The Violence"). Its cause was mainly mounting tensions between the two leading political parties, which subsequently ignited after the assassination of the Liberal presidential candidate Jorge Eliécer Gaitán on 9 April 1948.[94][95] The ensuing riots in Bogotá, known as El Bogotazo, spread throughout the country and claimed the lives of at least 180,000 Colombians.[96]

Revelation chapter 21
"See, the home of God is among mortals,
He will dwell with them as their God;
they will be his peoples,
and God himself will be with them;
he will wipe every tear from their eyes."

This is our promise, to live with our God in peace and love and kindness and Glory to our Father, Son and Holy Spirit that have sustained us here in this life.  They have provided all we need to be children of our Holy God and we will at last be joined with God in the heavenly home.  What a promise!!!

On this day
2001  It was a Friday, Nicole was 16 and had her car so Mom and I were on our own.  We went over to church for dinner and crafts.  We loved these events that too soon disappeared from the agenda, but I still have many of the crafts that we made.  The three snowmen that we stick in the ground (if it isn't frozen yet)  Mom painted the Mom, I painted the Dad and Nicole painted the child snowman - a fond memory of those craft nights at church!  Those must have been the year before when Nicole was with us, Mom and I probably made the candy containers this year.  It was all good!

2001 - For the first time in it's history, McDonald's teamed up with a retail partner on its Happy Meal promotions. Toys R Us provided plush figures from it's Animal Alley.  Nicole would have been too old for this so I don't remember.  I do remember the Bearenstein Bear ones though!!!

The territory of the Viceroyalty of New Granada became the Republic of Colombia, organized as a union of the current territories of Colombia, Panama, Ecuador, Venezuela, parts of Guyana and Brazil and north of Marañón River.[79] The Congress of Cúcuta in 1821 adopted a constitution for the new Republic.[80][81] Simón Bolívar became the first President of Colombia, and Francisco de Paula Santander was made Vice President.[82] However, the new republic was unstable and three countries emerged from the collapse of Gran Colombia in 1830 (New Granada, Ecuador and Venezuela).[83][84]
Formation of the present Colombia since the Viceroyalty of New Granada's independence from the Spanish Empire
Colombia was the first constitutional government in South America,[85] and the Liberal and Conservative parties, founded in 1848 and 1849, respectively, are two of the oldest surviving political parties in the Americas.[86] Slavery was abolished in the country in 1851.[87][88]
Internal political and territorial divisions led to the dissolution of Gran Colombia in 1830.[83][84] The so-called "Department of Cundinamarca" adopted the name "New Granada", which it kept until 1858 when it became the "Confederación Granadina" (Granadine Confederation). After a two-year civil war in 1863, the "United States of Colombia" was created, lasting until 1886, when the country finally became known as the Republic of Colombia.[85][89] Internal divisions remained between the bipartisan political forces, occasionally igniting very bloody civil wars, the most significant being the Thousand Days' War (1899–1902).[90]

Revelation chapter 20   "Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain."  If you are awake and aware you know that there is an unfortunate balance to this world/life.  Good and evil are present in all things and time.  This passage talks about the Devil having been chained up in the pit but is loosed on the world after a period of time.  You can put together your own understanding of all this - but you can't deny the presence of evil in our world - it's on the news 24/7.  I know a lot of people that do not believe in the Devil and it's sanctuary - hell, but look around and wonder today if that angel was locking it up or turning it loose.  We are entering a time of Advent, which is waiting for the birth of our King Jesus Christ and the goodness and salvation He offers.  It's a good time to denounce the devil and all his hold on this place as Jesus did.

On this day
1993  It was a Monday and after work and school we got the Christmas decor down (Nicole and I) and we did the lights on the bushes.  The plan was to watch the hockey game and do laundry after that but Nicole was sad over the changes in our holiday expectations this year.  When there is a change in family dynamics, children have a hard time adjusting, especially at the holidays.  So we ditched the hockey game and laundry and played games.  Please note during this time that if you have had changes in your life - your children should be your first  concern.  I promise you if you don't make them a priority and work through this together it will affect all of their lives, especially yours.

Independence

The Battle of Boyacá was the decisive battle that ensured success of the liberation campaign of New Granada.
Since the beginning of the periods of conquest and colonization, there were several rebel movements against Spanish rule, but most were either crushed or remained too weak to change the overall situation. The last one that sought outright independence from Spain sprang up around 1810 and culminated in the Colombian Declaration of Independence, issued on 20 July 1810, the day that is now celebrated as the nation's Independence Day.[64] This movement followed the independence of St. Domingue (present-day Haiti) in 1804, which provided some support to an eventual leader of this rebellion: Simón BolívarFrancisco de Paula Santander also would play a decisive role.[65][66][67]
The Socorro Province was the site of the genesis of the independence process.
A movement was initiated by Antonio Nariño, who opposed Spanish centralism and led the opposition against the Viceroyalty.[68] Cartagena became independent in November 1811.[69] In 1811 the United Provinces of New Granada were proclaimed, headed by Camilo Torres Tenorio.[70][71] The emergence of two distinct ideological currents among the patriots (federalism and centralism) gave rise to a period of instability.[72] Shortly after the Napoleonic Wars ended, Ferdinand VII, recently restored to the throne in Spain, unexpectedly decided to send military forces to retake most of northern South America. The viceroyalty was restored under the command of Juan Sámano, whose regime punished those who participated in the patriotic movements, ignoring the political nuances of the juntas.[73] The retribution stoked renewed rebellion, which, combined with a weakened Spain, made possible a successful rebellion led by the Venezuelan-born Simón Bolívar, who finally proclaimed independence in 1819.[74][75] The pro-Spanish resistance was defeated in 1822 in the present territory of Colombia and in 1823 in Venezuela.[76][77][78]    This is very reminiscent of our own history - fighting against the
European power and establishing two powers of their own that eventually turn into civil issues
as we have experienced here.  We just don't want peace do we?

Revelation chapter 14  "Then I looked, and there was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion!  And with him were one hundred forty-four thousand, who had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads."  I'm sure John was thrilled for this vision, to see so many followers in heaven, loved and collected by our God and Savior.  I know that all numbers mentioned in the bible are meaningful but I can't help but think that after all these years there are many more if we could see what John saw then.  And according to our time and lives maybe we would all have baseball caps on with Father and Son named on them, standing in the glow of love and joy singing Holy Holy Holy!!

On this day
1991  I had to work at Quality but Mark was home and he took Nicole to school and had time with her after school.  They might have even put the lights up outside.  I had to stop afterward at Farmer Jacks for a few things because the next day was Thanksgiving and I was hosting.  It was late just like this year.  I know what it is like to be a working Mom and the holidays are upon you.  The house decorating, the baking, the shopping, church and school activities and special crafts to make with the kids so that all is memorable for them.  I think we overdo it sometime - I did much more than my mom did with us kids, but maybe that's the point, we want so much for our family.  Enjoy the noise, mess and confusion - keep it in your heart for too soon it is over.  I like watching you do it now.

1991 - The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution that led the way for the establishment of a UN peacekeeping operation in Yugoslavia.  How is that working out?  There is no more Yugoslavia, it was absorbed by surrounding countries.

Attack of the British army on Cartagena de Indias. The battle resulted in a major defeat for the British Navy and Army during the War of Jenkins' Ear, 1739–48.[50]

Many intellectual leaders of the independence process participated in the Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada.
The Viceroyalty of New Granada was created in 1717, then temporarily removed, and then re-established in 1739. Its capital was Santa Fé de Bogotá. This Viceroyalty included some other provinces of northwestern South America that had previously been under the jurisdiction of the Viceroyalties of New Spain or Peru and correspond mainly to today's Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama. So, Bogotá became one of the principal administrative centers of the Spanish possessions in the New World, along with Lima and Mexico City, though it remained somewhat backward compared to those two cities in several economic and logistical ways.[58][59]
After Great Britain declared war on Spain in 1739, Cartagena quickly became the British forces' top target, but an upset Spanish victory during the War of Jenkins' Ear, a war with Great Britain for economic control of the Caribbean, cemented Spanish dominance in the Caribbean until the Seven Years' War.[50][60]
The 18th-century priest, botanist and mathematician José Celestino Mutis was delegated by Viceroy Antonio Caballero y Góngora to conduct an inventory of the nature of New Granada. Started in 1783, this became known as the Royal Botanical Expedition to New Granada. It classified plants and wildlife, and founded the first astronomical observatory in the city of Santa Fe de Bogotá.[61] In July 1801 the Prussian scientist Alexander von Humboldt reached Santa Fe de Bogotá where he met with Mutis. In addition, historical figures in the process of independence in New Granada emerged from the expedition as the astronomer Francisco José de Caldas, the scientist Francisco Antonio Zea, the zoologist Jorge Tadeo Lozano and the painter Salvador Rizo.[62][63]

Revelation chapter 12  "So when the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child..."  I admit to never having read this part of Revelation.  It seems mystical, not biblical but - read it again, in fact read it all.  To continue it says the earth came to the help of the woman, but the dragon was left to make war on the rest of her children. If you remember her son Cain left the door open by murdering his brother.  I think we can guess the woman was Eve and that the dragon is chasing all of us - her children.  Keep close to God - know that Jesus is the testimony that you need to commit to memory.

On this day
1990  I worked on this day and so Nicole went to Grandma El's for the day.  They always had a great time, Mom poured out all her heart and soul into Nicole - more so than any of the rest of us.  Nicole was a fun well mannered child, easy to entertain and be with. I think she melted Grandma's old hard headed German upbringing.  For Nicole a lot of that might have had to do with her family of loving kind people being a great example.  Beside working a couple days a week I was still running Sunday School and a few other jobs at church.  After dinner Nicole and I went to church to check out the Christmas tree the ladies had put up.  It was not a Santa and toys kind of tree, it was decorated with what the church called Chrismons.  They were ornaments all hand made to represent different things in the Bible.  Mom had made a bird of pearls and feathers with red droplets, and I wish I could tell you the meaning of it - I can't, but it was beautiful and Mom was very proud of it.

1990 - Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev met with Iraqi Foreign Minister Tariq Aziz at the Kremlin to demand that Iraq withdraw from Kuwait.  Again, did you think this was a new war?

1990 - Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. agreed to acquire MCA Inc. for $6.6 billion.

Colonial exchange

In 1542, the region of New Granada, along with all other Spanish possessions in South America, became part of the Viceroyalty of Peru, with its capital in Lima.[46] In 1547, New Granada became the Captaincy-General of New Granada within the viceroyalty.
In 1549, the Royal Audiencia was created by a royal decree, and New Granada was ruled by the Royal Audience of Santa Fe de Bogotá, which at that time comprised the provinces of Santa Marta, Rio de San Juan, Popayán, Guayana and Cartagena.[47] But important decisions were taken from the colony to Spain by the Council of the Indies.[48][49]

In the 16th century, Europeans began to bring slaves from Africa. Spain was the only European power that could not establish factories in Africa to purchase slaves; therefore, the Spanish empire relied on the asiento system, awarding merchants (mostly from PortugalFranceEngland, and the Dutch Empire) the license to trade enslaved people to their overseas territories.[51][52] Some people defended the human rights and freedoms of oppressed peoples.[Note 3][Note 4] The indigenous peoples could not be enslaved because they were legally subjects of the Spanish Crown.[57] To protect the indigenous peoples, several forms of land ownership and regulation were established: resguardosencomiendas and haciendas.[42][43
this might be something new that you haven't learned about slavery - how it was handled and avoided in South America.

Revelation chapter 12  "The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world - he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him."  Remember that serpent in the Garden of Eden?  Yep same snake, and, he has gained a following.  How many have eaten from that tree of knowledge?  or is it evil?  The devil, as you can see by the news, is alive and well and living among us.  He steals our children, and kills our loved ones with illness and sin.  But the time comes when our Messiah comes and throws them down and accuses them for what and who they are.  Blessed be our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ.

1989  Depending on the how the days fall, very often this might be the first Sunday in advent.  It  was a Saturday this year and my being the Super of the Sunday School - we had our first Christmas program practice.  Nicole was 4 this year, so not the nose picking angel in the first row.  Every year was an extravaganza and I might have it on video if you want to come see it.  They were always a labor of love and a busy time.  Nicole had a birthday party at Denise's house in the afternoon and then Andy and Alice picked us up to attend my cousin Sandy's daughter's wedding.  I saw a flashback picture on FB this morning and thought it looked familiar.  Happy Anniversary to Kathy and Jeff!  wow 30 years!! The conquistadors made frequent alliances with the enemies of different indigenous communities. Indigenous allies were crucial to conquest, as well as to creating and maintaining empire.[39] Indigenous peoples in New Granada experienced a decline in population due to conquest as well as Eurasian diseases, such as smallpox, to which they had no immunity.[40][41] Regarding the land as deserted, the Spanish Crown sold properties to all persons interested in colonised territories, creating large farms and possession of mines.[42][43][44]
In the 16th century, the nautical science in Spain reached a great development thanks to numerous scientific figures of the Casa de Contratación and nautical science was an essential pillar of the Iberian expansion.[45]
And we thought we were helping them right?

Revelations chapter 11  "Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, "The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever!""   I wonder if they used earthly items (trumpets) to relate heaven to the reader or if these instruments were created here to use in worship on earth.  I'm sorry that is kind of a, what came first question but the descriptions of heaven sound wonderfully familiar.  I would love to hear the heavenly choirs singing as I do the choir in church on Sunday morning.  And now I also have that song stuck in my head....And He Shall Reign forever and ever!!!!!

1988  It was Thanksgiving and I was hosting.  I put the turkey on and then we watched the parade.  Nicole was three and Aaron was here and oh how I miss those holiday mornings.  Sleepy, snuggly kids in pajamas glued to the TV.  It was a nice day in the 50's and Aaron played outside all day.  I'm sure Nicole was out there a good part of the day as well.  Later Aunt Jan, Grandpa, Mike, Pam, and Emma came over for dinner but Grandma Luvy was working at Cottage Hospital this day and came over later.  That evening we watched ET on television.  "ET phone home!"

Santa Marta was founded in 1525,[31] and Cartagena in 1533.[32] Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada led an expedition to the interior in April 1536, and christened the districts through which he passed "New Kingdom of Granada". In August 1538, he founded provisionally its capital near the Muisca cacicazgo of Bacatá, and named it "Santa Fe". The name soon acquired a suffix and was called Santa Fe de Bogotá.[33][34] Two other notable journeys by early conquistadors to the interior took place in the same period. Sebastián de Belalcázar, conqueror of Quito, traveled north and founded Cali, in 1536, and Popayán, in 1537;[35] from 1536 to 1539, German conquistador Nikolaus Federmann crossed the Llanos Orientales and went over the Cordillera Oriental in a search for El Dorado, the "city of gold".[36][37] The legend and the gold would play a pivotal role in luring the Spanish and other Europeans to New Granada during the 16th and 17th centuries.[38]
