Jeremiah 17:7  "Blessed is the man (woman) who trusts in the Lord."  Trust is a huge issue.  I love people, all people and in talking to those who have issues, trust is one of the most common.  If you have been let down by people in your past it carries on to everyone you meet.  You start to question whether they are being honest with you.  While a bad case of this takes years of therapy to get over there is someone you can always trust.  Someone that loves you as far as east is from west, as highest mountains to deepest seas, from beginning to end and regardless of who or what you are.  Jesus came to earth to experience human life, to set an example of how we should trust and care for one another.  Are you a trustworthy person?  Can people rely on you to be and do what you say?  Look to Jesus for strength and advice - you can trust in the Lord.

1997  You might have memories of this day.  It was my cousin Chuck's birthday, maybe 50 and Carol threw him a big bash party.  The only thing she didn't know was that it was going to be the playoff day for the Red Wings.  Great year!  I picked up my cousin Kathy, Aunt Margaret and Aunt Annie and we went out to the party together.  There were TV's set up in every corner and wall in the hall.  You couldn't even talk for all the yelling.  So exciting!  And they won the Stanley Cup that night.  So much for Chuck's birthday.  I took everyone home and then picked up Nicole to drive around and join the festivities out in the streets.  She would have been 12 and I'm sure watched the game.  We drove around celebrating, blowing the horn and yelling "Red Wings!" with everyone else.  We had a sun roof and Nicole was standing on the seat with her head out.  (I was driving slow)  It was so fun!!

The 1997 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League's (NHL) 1996–97 season, and the culmination of the 1997 Stanley Cup playoffs. It was contested by the Detroit Red Wings and the Philadelphia Flyers. Detroit was in the Final for the second time in three years (the other coming in 1995, when they lost to the New Jersey Devils) while the Flyers were making their first appearance since losing in 1987 to the Edmonton Oilers. Detroit won the series in four games to win the Stanley Cup for the eighth time in franchise history and the first time since 1955; Philadelphia had not won since 1975. Detroit was the last team to win the Cup without having home ice advantage in the Finals and with fewer than 100 points earned during the regular season until 2009.

Thought I would share all of this!!

History[edit]

From classical antiquity to the Roman Empire[edit]

Cassander, founder of the city
The 4th-century AD Rotunda of Galerius, one of several Roman monuments in the city and a UNESCOWorld Heritage Site
The city was founded around 315 BC by the King Cassander of Macedon, on or near the site of the ancient town of Therma and 26 other local villages.[27] He named it after his wife Thessalonike,[28] a half-sister of Alexander the Great and princess of Macedonia as daughter of Philip II. Under the kingdom of Macedonia the city retained its own autonomy and parliament[29] and evolved to become the most important city in Macedonia.[28]
After the fall of the kingdom of Macedonia in 168 BC, in 148 BC Thessalonica was made the capital of the Roman province of Macedonia.[30] Thessalonica became a free city of the Roman Republic under Mark Antony in 41 BC.[28][31]It grew to be an important trade-hub located on the Via Egnatia,[32] the road connecting Dyrrhachium with Byzantium,[33] which facilitated trade between Thessaloniki and great centers of commerce such as Rome and Byzantium.[34] Thessaloniki also lay at the southern end of the main north-south route through the Balkans along the valleys of the Morava and Axios river valleys, thereby linking the Balkans with the rest of Greece.[35] The city later became the capital of one of the four Roman districts of Macedonia.[32] Later it became the capital of all the Greek provinces of the Roman Empire because of the city's importance in the Balkan peninsula.

Nehemiah 3:1-12  This is a section of this book called Builders of the Wall.  It tells of many people from all walks of life and locations, joining together to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem.  There were even women.  They came from being priests,  perfume makers, and goldsmiths.  Families and politicians from many different cities and locales joined in the work,  It sounds like different people used different materials and styles so, the wall was not aesthetically perfect to see I'm thinking.  It was a great effort and certainly showed what can be accomplished by putting our differences aside for the common good.  Why? do you say?  Why build a wall?  Because we live in an imperfect world that threatens the life of people living in different beliefs and customs.  Nehemiah looked to protect God's people from their enemies.  I prefer to think we can save the world by friending everyone, but that (as we see in this world) is not possible. I tend to be somewhat naive.   All we can do is pray - pray for peace and understanding.

1992  This is my sister Alice's birthday, so after Nicole's softball practice we had a party for her here at my house.  We celebrated everything in those days, anything for a party!  So it was Andy and Alice, Mom Barb and Bill, Ty and Norma.  It says there was roller blading, but I'm not sure who that was referring to.  Most likely Nicole and Alice, she is good for anything!  Does your family celebrate birthdays!  Who in your family is most likely to do something crazy?  C'mon, we all have one.

1674 - Sivaji crowned himself King of India. Can you do that?

Names and etymology[edit]

Inscription reading "To Queen Thessalonike, (Daughter) of Philip", Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki
The original name of the city was Θεσσαλονίκη Thessaloníkē. It was named after princess Thessalonike of Macedon, the half sister of Alexander the Great, whose name means "Thessalian victory", from Θεσσαλός 'Thessalos', and Νίκη 'victory' (Nike), honoring the Macedonian victory at the Battle of Crocus Field (353/352 BCE).
Minor variants are also found, including Θετταλονίκη Thettaloníkē,[17][18] Θεσσαλονίκεια Thessaloníkeia,[19] Θεσσαλονείκη Thessaloneíkē, and Θεσσαλονικέων Thessalonikéōn.[20][21]
The name Σαλονίκη Saloníkē is first attested in Greek in the Chronicle of the Morea (14th century), and is common in folk songs, but it must have originated earlier, as al-Idrisi called it Salunik already in the 12th century. It is the basis for the city's name in other languages: Солѹнь (Solun) in Old Church Slavonic, סלוניקה (Salonika) in LadinoSelânik سلانیك in Ottoman Turkish and Selanik in modern TurkishSolun or Солун in the local and neighboring South Slavic languages, Салоники (Saloníki) in Russian, and Sãrunã in Aromanian, and Salonica or Salonika in English.[22]
Thessaloniki was revived as the city's official name in 1912, when it joined the Kingdom of Greece during the Balkan Wars.[23]
In local speech, the city's name is typically pronounced with a dark and deep L characteristic of Modern Macedonian accent.[24][25]
The name is often abbreviated as Θεσ/νίκη.[26]

Psalm 4:6  "Let the light of your face shine upon us, O Lord."  I have an acquaintance that needs to have this happen to him asap.  He lives in Key West and is dying of kidney failure and now what sounds like leukemia.  He is crying out for his friends to help him.  The crowd he ran with were fast living and self centered.  I know, I spent some time with that group as well.  His real help at this point can only come from the Lord himself - and I said as much, I only hope he listens.  In the mean time I pray that God would shine his face on Don, and give him hope and comfort.  If anyone reading this is in the Keys - Don Duchene needs some God.

1991 - Andy and Alice came over for dinner to celebrate Alice's birthday, which is tomorrow.  I looked to see why not tomorrow and saw that Nicole had a baseball game and Merry graduated from 8th grade, so we celebrated early - but we always celebrated.  I have gone up north around her birthday in past years but it isn't always easy to get away.  This year I sent a card and shopped on line to make her day a  little special.  Love my sister.

1595 - Henry IV's army defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Fontaine-Francaise. I feel like this would be as if Michigan and Ohio went to war with each other.  What do you think?

Psalm 4:7   "You have filled my heart with greater joy..."  The same kind of joy when you see your baby for the first time, or a new puppy or a spectacular sunset.  It's like spending the day doing your favorite thing with the love of your life or learning that your cancer is gone.  Those wonderful events come to you by the grace of your Father because, he made those moments for you.  Nothing that man creates can match what God has created.  Take time to think about that Creator that loves you so much and wants you with Him today.  Let Jesus and His kind and gentle love fill your heart so that you recognize those beautiful moments as God given.

1987  These were my happy days when Nicole was 2.  I spent all day creating play, work,  read and visit times with her and family.  We walked up to Chapoton for bread in the morning.  I put her in the stroller but she preferred to walk most of the time (even at 2).  The neighbor boys, Joe and Jamie came over to play because, Nicole had the best toys around. (Even though they were 4 years older)  We went to visit Dad at work, at the boat store and after work Mark went to help work on the boat he was racing in - Breakout.  Later that evening, Grandpa, came by and dropped off a beautiful Schwinn bike with a child seat on the back and a helmet for his little grand daughters head.  We lacked nothing.  But in the end, the time spent with God in church,  me and family and other kids were what shaped Nicole.

1615 - The fortress of Osaka, Japan, fell to shogun Ieyasu after a six month siege.
he Siege of Osaka (大坂の役 Ōsaka no Eki, or, more commonly, 大坂の陣 Ōsaka no Jin) was a series of battles undertaken by the Tokugawa shogunate against the Toyotomi clan, and ending in that clan's destruction. Divided into two stages (Winter Campaign and Summer Campaign), and lasting from 1614 to 1615, the siege put an end to the last major armed opposition to the shogunate's establishment. The end of the conflict is sometimes called the Genna Armistice (元和偃武 Genna Enbu), because the era name was changed from Keichō to Genna immediately following the siege. Was this a movie?  I seem to remember a movie.

Psalm 17:15  "And I --in righteousness I will see your face; when I awake, I will be satisfied with seeing your likeness."  I was talking to a faithful Christian yesterday about the satisfaction of knowing that this life is not the best to come.  He spoke of his disappoint in this place and the people here.  We talked about how bad we feel for those who don't have faith and when this life does not fulfill their expectations they have nothing to look forward to.  I hope your life is going well and that you lack nothing.  I do hope that you have faith to sustain you through times that let you down.  God will never let you down, He is, was and will forever be.

1986  My days were spent with Nicole, at one year old she was a whole new world of love and joy.  I had a neighbor, Linda that had a baby, Denise that was a little older than Nicole and she was over a lot, twice on this day.  In between those visits my mom and brother Mark came over.  Mom helped me with ironing (never do that anymore) and Mark spent every minute he could with Nicole.  He had just had a heart monitor on for a day.  I don't know what they found out but in November that same year he had a massive heart attack and died.  Apparently they didn't resolve anything.

1621 - The Dutch West India Company received a charter for New Netherlands (now known as New York).   The Dutch West India Company was a corporation formed in 1621. It was modeled on the Dutch East India Company, which was set up to trade in the East Indies. This video segment from Dutch New York describes how this new company had a monopoly on trade and set up trading posts on the West Coast of Africa, on the coast of what is now Brazil, in the Caribbean, and along the Hudson River in what is now New York. The company had a military purpose as well, as it was directed to attack ships sailed by enemies of the Dutch Republic.  To see this go to this date and pull up history.

Psalm 27:1  "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?  The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?"  Wow!  How empowering is that?  Jesus is the light of the world, he shines on our path to show us the way to go and be and then he suffers and dies on the cross. like the offerings of sheep on the altar back in the days of Moses mentioned in Leviticus.  He died for the atonement of our sins, all of us, all of our sins.  A sin offering.  Sincerely what should I fear?  Thank you Jesus for your great love for us.

1982  I was volunteering with the St Clair Shores probation office in a "one on one" program.  I would work with a single offender that might benefit from additional help.  This gal was my age, a chronic offender alcoholic.  She had been arrested for drunk and disorderly and was still drunk at her arraignment when she urinated on the judges desk.  Why they thought I could help her I still don't know, but I tried.  I signed us up for exercise classes (she had agreed to) and after the class she pulled a bottle of whiskey from my glove box and offered me a slug after she had one.  On another night we had a meeting with the parents, just her and I and Mom and Dad.  Unfortunately, they had already given her up as a lost cause and only wanted to know from me what they should do next.   I just met with her at a park after that and didn't react if she had a bottle with her, I just let her talk her crap to me about how she was going to change and be a better person.  I only suggested she get into a program that could help her when they pulled me off and gave me a teenage boy.  A year later I asked the probation officer if he had heard from her and he said she had disappeared from sight.  We can only try, they have to want help.

1774 - The British government ordered the Port of Boston closed.
