March 22, 2015 Sunday

Exercised my brain with the Sunday crossword.  I do the newspaper crossword every morning, extremely habitual person.  "They" say it is good to do puzzles to keep your mind sharp.  Mine is like a butter knife.

Haven't been to church yet, but I like this reading from Ephesians 6: 15-17:
As shoes for your feet put on whatever will make you ready to proclaim the Gospel of peace.  With all of these, take the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one.  Take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit which is the word of God.  Were you wondering what to wear today?

On this day:
1979 - This was back when I worked at Quality Picture Frame in Oak Park.  We set up a space at the Home and Garden Show and later at the Condo show.  We had frames and print bins and framed artwork.  I don't think it was a big money maker for us but it got our name out there.  We did all of JL Hudson's framing then, but we were always looking for ways to expand.  The shows were usually 10 days or so and I worked 13 hour days down there, but I really loved it.  It was a hot party atmosphere and I met a lot of fun people there.  I can't believe I wore high heels all day at those shows, way to vain to put on "comfortable" shoes.

1622 - Indians attacked a group of colonist in the James River area of Virginia. 347 residents were killed.  I'm guessing the colonists started it.  Anybody really know?  Ok I checked , it was in retaliation for steeling all the prime riverfront property, but their tactics were interesting.  look it up.

Parenting;
My neighbors came by last night.  I had called them because I wondered how their quest of becoming foster parents was going.  They have tried for years to have a child but it wasn't in God's plan apparently.  He is now heading them in another direction.  There are so many children out there that need love and care, this couple will be wonderful!

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties:

When we got home from the record store I ran into the house and flew down the basement stairs to play my new records and sing into an invisible mic to my invisible boyfriend. The poles in the basement served for my dance partner for the fast dances.  But when we danced to Where or When by Dion and the Belmonts or an equally good slow tune I had a great imagination.  My partner, Joey was a smooth dancer and held me tight.  I could close my eyes and imagine him leading me around the basement. The crowd around us gave us plenty of room because we were so good and they would applaud when we finished the dance.  If Mom came down to do some laundry or something I would just sing and sit on the arm of the couch, like I was just enjoying listening.

March 21, 2015 Saturday

Did some weight lifting with Denise Austin.  She's the "if you rest your rust" girl.

Peter 1 & 2 - Because I was awake most of the night.  Peter tells us to live the life of a Christian and not get sucked back into the sinful mainstream of selfishness, greed and crime that leads to a bad end. It is difficult for people that see all the glitz and glamor, the cars and clothes and all that goes with it on TV - 24/7.  We want what they have.  You just need to look at how successful at being happy those same people are.  Looks are deceiving.  Love, real love for one another is the true key and the true way to peace and happiness.

On this day;
My boyfriend of the time, Pete was going through with his dad, what we all seemed destined to.  Our parents age and need to be helped.  Pete's dad had Alzheimer's and it progressed really quick.  He forgot how to speak English,he only spoke German and thought his wife was his old girlfriend Barbara.  She would get upset and threaten to throw him out into the street.  Pete had to go stay the night at his moms.  He tried to bring him here but he would get angry with me when I could not speak German to him.

1906 - Ohio passed a law that prohibited hazing by fraternities after two fatalities.  This is ongoing huh?

Family/parenting -
The reason I was up last night with enough time to read 1 & 2 Peter was because of my Mom. It is what Pete was doing in the 70's.  I don't feel like I have handled this as well as I should have.  Unfortunately, money is the prime reason.  I agreed to put her into a Medicaid nursing home, that is close to the house - because I'm there so often.  I could have chosen a better place farther away, but then I might not have stopped in as much.  What do you think?

     The average cost of a new home in that year(1960)  was $16,500.00, ours might have been a little more.  We moved out of a little 3 bedroom shingled house that Dad had rented when we moved back into the city from Clarkston where we lived on a lake.  We lived in the rental on Coyle for a couple of years while the new house was being built. The brand new house was in a nice area of northwest Detroit, a really nice three bedroom brick home with a basement. My dad had that house built to order, he was very proud of it.

March 20, 2015 Friday AND the first day of SPRING!

Kathy Smith and I did some aerobics together.  Pretty sure she didn't have to step over the cat while she was working out.  I feel like it is an added agility move on my part!

Ephesians chapter 6:12 For our struggle is not against enemies of blood and flesh, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.  WOW  this sounds like an uprising.  Arm yourself with peace for the war ahead.

On this day
2012  It got up to 80 degrees.  Everyone is out on a day like that - I sat in the driveway and soaked it up and said hello to all the walkers and dogs that went by.  It won't be 80 but it is getting up into the 50's today here in southeast Michigan.  Get out, get some fresh air, take a walk!  It will get you into the Spring mood!

1627 - France & Spain signed an accord for fighting Protestantism.They didn't get all of us.

Parenting  A lot of my friends are or have taken care of aging parents.  Last night while out having dinner with friends my mom called from the nursing home and said she needed some clean clothes right away.  It is really no different then the babysitter calling and saying your child is sick.  Hang in there in either circumstance.  You can do this.

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties

     That Plymouth holds one especially bad memory for me.  Dad had taken Martin and I to the store and Martin, being only three wanted to get in the back, where the seat was folded down.  It was only 3 blocks from home and Ralph Nader was sadly missing.   I remember the sick feeling I had when Dad had to stop fast and that little guy fell forward and hit his mouth on the steel frame of the seat I was sitting in.  He broke off both of his front baby teeth.  Needless to say he screamed and I caught hell for not watching him better.  Inside I was yelling at myself, how could I have let that happen to that sweet little guy that I loved so much.  His Jagged front teeth, for the next 4 or so years was a constant reminder of what a horrible big sister I was.  It is an occasion I never forgot.  Every time I got in that car.

March 19, 2015 Thursday

Started the day with some ballet.  She says you might never be a prima ballerina, but for half an hour you can feel like one.

Ephesians chapter 6:10-11 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his power.  Put on the whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  Sounds to me like a protection clause to face everyday danger.  Makes sense to put it on.

On this day:
2006 -Nicole was away at college and I was more involved in church then ever.  On this day the youth board had coffee hour, I taught sunday school, sang in the choir, helped serve communion and was the friendly caller.  As the director of the Board of Youth I had to put the notes and announcements together for the newsletter and go to the council meeting later that day.  It sounds like a lot but, I really enjoyed doing it.  When you are passionate about something it is a joy not a job.

1748 - The English Naturalization Act passed granting Jews right to colonize in the U.S. Freedom of religion.

Parenting
I was listening to the radio yesterday on my way to work and heard a conversation on girls that were taking their mothers out to the bar with them.  You can imagine the mixed replies that callers had.  "EW take my mother to the bar?  I don't even like going regular places with her"  "My mom was hitting on all the guys at the bar, very embarrassing."  And so forth.  Well you know what kind of a mom you have, didn't they see that coming?  I, on occasion go to bars/dinner or place with my daughter, quite a bit actually.  We have a good time.

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties (excerpt)

     I wondered if Dad wanted to take some long trips with that car which was a 1959 Plymouth Fury station wagon. Then, after all, the average cost of a gallon of gas that year was .31 cents. Dinah Shore sang See the USA in your Chevrolet and maybe he wanted to go. The car was beige and had two bench seats, the front and the second seat.  The third seat in the back faced backward.  It was a pretty new car, but it already smelled of smoke even though Dad always had the window down.  It was a cold car; the heat came out in the front and never made it to the back seat which was as hard as a wooden bench.  If we went to visit family and were going home late, I couldn’t fall asleep in the back because it was not comfortable like the old Buick we used to have.  There were no seat belts then, except we had a baby seat for Martin that had two hangers to put over the seat, plastic, with a tray and a little plastic steering wheel with a horn.  The old Buick had cloth seats, like an old comfortable couch in the living room.   You could lie down and fall asleep.  Not the new station wagon.

Art and Culture

stained glass fish We are often asked: What do you do here in the winter? And the short answer is: we make art. A slightly longer answer is: we go to dance, theater and musical performances; sew quilts and make paintings; knit, carve, weave … basically, we become a bustling hotbed of creativity.
The weather (i.e., lots and lots of rain!) fosters and feeds the art and culture here. Throughout the fall and winter, we enjoy several theater and dance performances, including an annual presentation of The Nutcracker. Since 1986, our inimitable Wearable Art Show has been showcasing local costume designers who, by necessity, must also excel in the arts of dumpster-diving and glue-gunning. And, every month in the winter, we put on a variety show for each other called The Monthly Grind, a community tradition that features local musicians, magicians, orators, and dancers ... and free entry for anyone who brings a dessert to share.
When the weather clears and the skunk cabbage begins to bloom, so does the art. It’s been a part of our culture since the first woven cedar bark basket and we love to share it with folks who visit our town.
For a deeper look into Ketchikan’s award-winning arts scene, check out our Telly-winning, Emmy-nominated film, The Artists, which showcases just a few of the many entertaining and creative members of our community.

March 17, 2015 Tuesday Happy St Patrick's Day !

Dancing with Rita today.

Ephesians chapter 5:21 - Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ.  Simply speaking walk the walk and talk the talk.  If you say you are a Christian and then steal, lie and do your neighbor harm, you are not wearing the Christian clothing.

On this day;
1989 - Alice, Mom, Nicole and I went to Chi Chi's for lunch then went to Birmingham to pick up Ackroyds meat pies for Andy's birthday dinner.  The Birmingham store is gone, but the Scottish butcher is still at Five Mile and Beech Daly in Redford - and my best buddy Don lives a mile away.  So convenient! The have a lot of Irish food there as well, bet they are busy today!

1756 - St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in New York City for the first time. The event took place at the Crown and Thistle Tavern. And so it began.

Parenting   So proud of my nieces that have been running in races for the last year or so.  They practice so hard and then play hard to celebrate.  They have also been raising money for their charity of choice "World Vision", which is also one of mine.  I think it is a matter of keeping your eye on the  bigger prize.  Go Merri and Lindsey!

 “Did you find the ones you wanted? Cookie?”
     “Yep, I got –The Battle of New Orleans, Mack the Knife, Dream Lover, and Handy Man.”  As if he knew those songs and really wanted to know.
     “Oh good.”  He dutifully replied nodding, as if he knew they were good choices.

     I hummed “He’ll have to go” all the way home.

March 16, 2015 Monday

Pilates for Dummies today.  I can't push Pilates enough, really gives you core strength.

Ephesians 5:10-14  Awake from the darkness.  If you are in darkness all the time you do not know what the light offers.  You can't see those things that you will forever miss, if you go back into the darkness.  Jesus is the light that shines on your peace and your future.

On this day;
1986 - It was my brother Andy's birthday and we were all there for cake/pie.  Nicole was not quite a year old and surprised us by taking her first steps for Uncle Andy.  Happy Birthday.

1521 - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan reached the Philippines. He was killed the next month by natives. This seems very sad.

Family - This week will be spent going through the process of finding a good place for Mom.  I can't really thing of too much else right now.

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties
      I was so glad people couldn’t see inside my head and know that I was remembering that day.  I found my records and stood in line to pay for them.  Head down, sneaking peeks at the other people.  I wish I were cooler looking and had a coat like that girl.  Her hair was so pretty too.  Mine might still have had remnants of a permanent my mother gave me.  I wonder if I could ever get mine to flip back like hers, and maybe get it bleached instead of this blah blond color it was.  Finally, I reached the cash register and paid for my purchases.  DING!  The register went, the drawer slammed and he counted out my change.  I walked out to my Dad and his 1959 Oldsmobile station wagon.
