January 7, 2018 Sunday #Steps#Baptism#MotorcyclePsycho!#NONO's

Get Fit
Planning on being busy today.  I am going to my "other" church to undecorate and help put Christmas away, that is always good for some steps.  I also know it is going to snow later today and will be a bit warmer so I might get in some shoveling exercise.  What are you planning, beside sitting and watching sports today?

Today is Baptism Sunday, the day we celebrate the Lord's baptism.  You can ask your Pastor or Priest why Jesus needed to be Baptised.  John the Baptist was equally surprised I'm sure.  Light a candle in celebration of your baptism today.  Not baptised?  Call me.

On this day
1968  It was a Sunday and my fiance Don and I went to the show with friends Ron and Gail, it was their anniversary.  We went to the Fox theater and saw Motorcycle Psycho.  Yep, Hard to believe but there is no reason to make it up.  After the show we went to Big Boys for dinner.  I did make a comment about the movie. Ech!  So, now, all day you can think of the demise of Detroit (after the riot) and the recent rebuilding and how you can't imagine the Fox showing that movie today!

1968 - The cost of a U.S. first class stamp was raised to 6 cents. Something else hard to imagine!

There’s a little something for everyone in the Scandinavian wonderland of Sweden. The country is covered in forests and lakes and its coastline is dotted with more than 24,000 picturesque little islands. Every inch of that beautiful terrain is accessible to the public. For those people who aren’t outdoorsmen, Sweden is home to a thriving urban culture that’s produced some of the most notable brands in the world. If you get the chance to travel through this beautiful nation, however, you shouldn’t go in ignorant. Here are a few suggestions on what not to do when you’re in Sweden.

15 Things NOT to Do in Sweden

1. Don’t Litter or Anything of the Kind

The first thing to know about Sweden is that they are extremely kind to their environs. They’re world leaders in the movement to eliminate waste, and that commitment goes way down the line to every citizen. They take preserving the environment very seriously, so while you’re in the country, be sure to show a similar level of respect.

2. Don’t Worry About the Tap Water

In a lot of places, the water might be a concern, but that’s not the case in Sweden. Not only is the water delicious, but the Swedes are a pretty socially conscious bunch (i.e. environmentally unfriendly bottles of water are frowned upon).

Went through the Daily Dozen that the massage therapist gave me and then sent her a text thanking her for how well those 12 exercises work to keep me strong and with a wide range of motion.  We don't always notice as we get older that slowly our arms, back, ankles and necks don't have the strength or rotation that they used to have.  If you need this sheet of exercises I can send them to you or you can go on line and Google them - they come up under Daily Dozen.

Ephesians 2:14  "For He Himself is our peace."  I know I mention this quite often and I too would like world peace but, I have learned to settle for the peace that I get from Jesus.  When you give up thinking that you can control the outcome of all that happens in your life and give it up to God, there is a peace that is not like any other that you get. Yes, there are many things in life that you can control but not everything and those are the things that make you crazy.  Meet Jesus.  He has peace for you.

2015  I was retired now and into a regular routine of exercise, crossword and coffee, shower and house cleaning.  Do you have a regular routine? Maybe you just get up, start drinking coffee and wait for something to jar you into action like a doctor appointment, etc.  I am OCD when it comes to schedule - but force myself to adjust to change when necessary.  Not so different I think from most of you.  A very important thing everyday for me is contacting someone that I care about and haven't heard from in a while, like on this day it was Dee Lynch.  That is why a lot of you think I have a huge social network, I do, that's why.  Some people prefer the simple life and solitude and that's ok too.  You be you.  Nicole and Glen went to the fundraiser for Brandon on this day, he should have made better choices and someone should have been in contact with him.  He died from a drug overdose on Christmas day, alone in a van.  Don't make the mistake of isolating yourself with your problems.  don't be that you.

0871 - England's King Alfred defeated the Danes at the Battle of Ashdown. So much of our history is war.  I never heard of King Alfred but I thought that Ashdown was a horse race venue.  ?  No?

After getting up at 6 and getting ready for work, then getting a text that I wasn't working today - I did what anyone would do.  I put my pajamas back on.  It was an extra effort to talk myself into putting on my exercise clothes (yes I wear exercise clothes to work out in) and work out with Jillian.  The upside of all this is that I was much warmer after the workout.  Do what you can!

My small group Bible Study has been meeting for a couple years.  I considered dropping it but now have assumed the leader role in the group.  Funny how that works.  Tonight we meet to discuss this passage from Mark 8:27-30  "Jesus went on with his disciples to the village of Caesarea Philippi.  And on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"  This is the center of this study to me.  Who do I say He is?  Who do you say He is?  Consider this today.  Who is Jesus to you?

2014  - We were getting snow on this day.  6 to 8 inches of it.  My neighbor Ty and I got out our snowblowers and shovels and started cleaning sidewalks and driveways.  We always did all the elderly peoples drives and a lot of the neighbors sidewalks and then we sat out in the garage and surveyed our handy work with a beer.  We were probably warm after all that work so the cold wasn't as bad as our thirst.  It is a great memory of my buddy and I.  He moved away and it hasn't been the same since. I hope his new neighbors appreciate him.  Today is not a good day for this - too cold it is only 0 degrees right now.

1781 - Richmond, VA, was burned by a British naval expedition led by Benedict Arnold. Hey I know that name!

Notable people[edit]

  • John Bauer, illustrator, painter
  • John Albert Bauer (4 June 1882 – 20 November 1918) was a Swedish painter and illustrator. His work is concerned with landscape and mythology, but he also composed portraits. He is best known for his illustrations of early editions of Bland tomtar och troll (Among Gnomes and Trolls), an anthology of Swedish folklore and fairy tales.

I feel like doing 20 jumping jacks is a good start to any day.  If you add knee lifts and squats, well you are a boss!  Add 20 lunges and some calf stretches and you are going to have a good day!!  Throw in a plank and ... whew!  over the top!

1 Samuel 3:10  "Yes I'm listening."   Samuel was a young boy when his loving mother gave him to God to live in the faith.  He wasn't accustomed to hearing God's voice and it took a while to recognize but he finally did - and this was his answer - "Yes, I'm listening."  Have you heard his voice?  Maybe not, it takes a while to  realize He is talking to you.  But, when you do hear it remember to say "Yes, I'm listening."

2013  Mom's cold was better so I didn't take her to the doctor.  I must have been laid off because I was home all day cleaning and doing laundry.  It must not have been as cold as today is because Mom went to get her hair done with Al and then went out to lunch.  Another way to know it wasn't that cold- I got my car washed.  When Nicole got home from work her and I went to Rochester to meet up with Kathy and Aaron at Sumo's for suchi - yum.  My advise for you today is stay in, do not get your car washed and if you need suchi have it delivered.  They do deliver it don't they?  No?  just pizza?  so be it..

1999

On this day in 1999, for the first time since Charlemagne’s reign in the ninth century, Europe is united with a common currency when the “euro” debuts as a financial unit in corporate and investment markets. Eleven European Union (EU) nations (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal and Spain), representing some 290 million people, launched the currency in the hopes of increasing European integration and economic growth.

The urban area of Jönköping today includes the eastern industrial town of Huskvarna, with which it has grown together.
Elmia, a major trade fair and exhibition centre, is situated in Jönköping. Elmia Wood is the world’s largest forestry fair, and those for subcontractors, trucks, caravans and railways are the biggest of their kind in Europe. Since 2001, Elmia has been the site of the world's largest LAN partyDreamHack, with two events every year, Dreamhack Summer and Dreamhack Winter.
LAN party is a gathering of people with computers or compatible game consoles, between which they establish a local area network (LAN) connection between the devices using a router or switch, primarily for the purpose of playing multiplayer video games together. The size of these networks may vary from small (two people), to very large gatherings of a hundred or more. Small parties can form spontaneously and take advantage of common household networking equipment, but larger ones typically require more planning, equipment, and preparation.  Now you know!

Do you have a set of weights? or soup cans? anything?  I have 3 lb and 5 lb weights that I use.  Jillian says to use light weights (3 lbs) when doing her circuit training.  This morning I used the 5 lbs because what I did was simply lifting.  I worked out the arms and legs and whatever supports those like the back and the butt.  What about you?  Keep those muscles strong!  You are only 3 days into the new resolution!  You can do it!

Ezra 3:11  "For He is good, for His mercy endures forever...."  The study writer talks about Christians that were not "Christians" all their lives.  Many of the great leaders, pastors, evangelists were not what you think when they were youths.  Our Father in heaven knows that our "youth" days can be less than angelic.  I was a terrible teenager and even young adult, and ok, even into middle age.  I always loved God and was a believer but it took my daughter Nicole coming into my life to make me see life through different eyes.  I apologized a lot to the Lord during those days and apparently He saw something in me worth saving and giving me hope for.  God is good and He is forever forgiving. Don't count yourself out!

On this day
2012  I made pea soup.  That might sound like a poor memory or unimportant entry in a journal but, Hey!  it was January 3rd, cold, Nicole was sick and who doesn't have a ham bone after Christmas?  Think about coming in from shoveling snow, or coming home from work, or the kids coming in from school and the windows are steamy, the house smells great and the warm soup going down your throat!  I gotta get a ham bone!  Didn't have ham this year.

1521 - Pope Leo X excommunicated Martin Luther. AND last year the Pope and the Head of the Lutheran World church had communion together.  Could we be getting smarter?

History[edit]

The Sofia Church in Jönköping, Neo-Gothic style, 1888
Jönköping is an old trading centre (Köping) situated at a natural crossroads for routes following the rivers Nissan and Lagan, and the road connecting the provinces of Östergötland and Västergötland, a result of the town's geographical position at the southern end of lake Vättern, which divides the two provinces.
On 18 May 1284 Jönköping became the first City in Sweden to be granted its rights by king Magnus Ladulås, who ruled mostly from Vättern's largest island Visingsö. The first part of the city's name, "Jön", is derived from a creek, "Junebäcken", in Talavid, in what is now the western part of the city. The second part of the name "köping", is, as mentioned above, an old word for a trading centre or market place.[4]
The geographical position of the city also left it vulnerable to attack via the river routes that led south, mainly from Danes. At that time the provinces of what is today southern Sweden — ScaniaHalland and Blekinge — belonged to Denmark. The city was plundered and burned several times until it was fortified during the 16th and 17th centuries.
Jönköping was known for its matchstick industry between 1845–1970.[5] Today it is an important Nordic logistical center, with many companies' central warehouses (such as ElkjøpIKEAElectrolux and Husqvarna) situated there.  I thought the Scandinavian countries were friendly but apparently not then.  Notice the business names, IKEA, Electrolux?  Those are the ones I know.

John 1:1  In the beginning was the Word, and Word was with God, and the Word was God"  Our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ was born into the world on Christmas but he has been one with God since the beginning.  One God - Father Son and Holy Spirit.  Wrap your mind around that today.

2010  Went to the bank and CVS with Nicole, probably for last minute items she needed because Spencer picked up her and 2 other people and they went to Colorado, snowboarding/skiing.  I fret when she goes but am so happy she has had all these great experiences.  After she left I busied myself taking down Christmas and putting it away, which meant up a 12' ladder into the garage loft.  This was only 7 years ago and my helper was my Mom.  She handed me the boxes on the ladder and I took them up and shoved them back as far as I could.  Only 7 years ago.  As a reward for our work we went to National Coney Island for dinner.  Wish she were here to help me today.   Nicole will be home later.  Kristin is going on an interview for a summer internship and tomorrow is leaving for a three week mission trip to Mexico.  More fretting with her Mom - and Nicole.

1492 - The leader of the last Arab stronghold in Spain surrendered to Spanish forces loyal to King Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella I. I believe this was a Muslim/Christian war or maybe just political, I should look or there is probably a movie on it.

John 14:6  Jesus said to him, "I am the way..."  Jesus was speaking to Thomas as it is recorded, but it is a message for all of us.  "I am the way and the truth and life."  He is also the light, the bread and the water you can drink and never thirst again.  If you are searching or hungry, first, define what it is you are searching for or what will satisfy your hunger.  Don't search your GPS or your pantry, look to God for the answers in what is missing in your life.

2009  I believe that the only way to celebrate on New Years Day is recover and relax.  Watch foot ball quietly and eat healthy foods. (or not)  Start the day off right.  In this year I called friends, Betty, Waynette, family - Uncle Hank, Andy  and Jan came over for dinner.  Nicole and her friend and I played Jackass all day.  (The game)  I had been at a party with a lot of my friends the night before so I didn't need to call them.  How about you?  Anyone you need to call to start the year off right?
