Get Fit
How about an ab workout today!  Do some sit-ups, Planking, Pilates.  We all complain about sore backs, the real hero with ab workouts is - it strengthens your back.  Do yourself a favor!  I worked out with a very young Denise today - Super Stomach.  I might just throw this one out.  My abs will never be that flat. BUT my back feels great!

Philippians 4:10-20 - Be thankful for all that people do for you.  Paul was thanking the Philippians for their gifts and kindness to him.  The study writer says that what you do for others raises a sweet aroma to God, an acceptable sacrifice.  So, don't be stinky today! Do something nice for someone.

On this day:
1968 - I wrote in my journal "still on curfew".  Looking back I realized it must have been due to Martin Luther King's murder a few days earlier.  I didn't remember that, but I guess in view of the previous years riot, it was a good idea.

1998 - The widow of Martin Luther King Jr. presented new evidence in an appeal for new federal investigation of the assassination of her husband.  Really?  30 years later and not resolved?  I need to pay more attention to this type of history.  As we know it repeats itself.

Parenting/Family - I babysat my friends 3 year old yesterday.  He is such a well mannered, sweet little boy.  They don't give him a lot of sugar, and I found out in a very quick test, why.  He played so nice with all my Easter toys, bunnies and baskets, etc. and then I gave him some jelly beans.  In a split second he went from calm to a frenzy - throwing grass from the baskets all over and out of control.  No more beans for that boy.  Think about how much sugar you give your kids.

Come Get These Memories - from the Sixties (excerpt)

Our house was the first house behind the houses that faced Outer Drive, which was a divided boulevard with mostly large beautiful homes.  It wove through most of Detroit, a show place for finer homes.  It went out from the east side from the edge of Grosse Pointe, westward to where it stopped by Woodward, but then started up again west of that and then wove down and around after Southfield to the Southwest section around River Rouge Park.  My dad used to drive that road a lot on our travels across town, it turned and curved, not like the straight mile roads or the streets like the spokes of the wheel that came out of downtown Detroit.  It was somewhat prestigious to live by Outer Drive and probably commanded higher taxes.  But we didn’t live on the prestigious road.
Kalkaska

History[edit]

The town was platted in 1873 by A. A. Abbott and R. L. Thompson, who owned a sawmill, and who correctly anticipated the arrival of the railroad.
On July 5, 1908, a fire began in the middle of the business block and burned most of the stores. Local photographer E. L. Beebe made a number of photographs of the fire, and the resulting postcards were widely sold, and can still be found today. Two years later, in 1910 another fire started in downtown Kalkaska. Again, in 1925 downtown Kalkaska was devastated by the largest fire since the Fire of 1908.
In 1916, the noted author Ernest Hemingway visited and fished in Kalkaska, and later immortalized the town in his story "The Battler". A historical marker has been placed at the Rugg Pond Dam, on the Rapid River, where Hemingway reportedly fished one night from the power house.
On July 10, 1951, the Kalkaska State Bank was robbed by an armed man, who fled and later attempted to escape on foot through a nearby swampy area. After three days of what was termed the largest manhunt in Northern Michigan history, involving the FBI and local and state authorities, the gunman was captured south of the town. Named Raymond J. Turcotte, he had a long string of prior convictions, including manslaughter. Turcotte confessed to the bank robbery and served 18 years in the Michigan State Prison at Jackson, Michigan including a term for escape in 1961.
Discovery of natural gas and oil in the area during the 1970s lead to significant growth for the village; however, the growth has since subsided.
In 1993, the Kalkaska schools made national headlines when a financial crisis resulted in a two-month-long closure. Subsequent funding reform improved the outlook for Kalkaska and similar small rural districts in Michigan.
Well!  who knew that?

Enjoy the Day!  Make it memorable!  Happy Birthday to Monna!

Bobby and I in the living room with boxing gloves.  I don't have a clue.  No, really a little kick boxing never hurt anyone - try it!  Martial arts makes a lot of sense for a few reasons.

Matthew 7:21-27 - vs 24  Jesus speaking-" Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."   The foundation of faith needs to be strong.  It needs to be learned through scripture and practiced in life and supported by fellow believers.  The church is a rock for you to build your faith on, learn, share and support.

On this day;
2011 -  Coffee on the lanai with the dogs.  Don and I were at our first stop in Florida, my dear friend Christina's place.  It is such a pleasant day to remember in the Villages.  We drove around to all the parks, bars and places of interest and soaked up the sun.  A lot happened that year and a lot has changed since then.  I am so glad we had that time with Chris and Steve.  Enjoy each day as they come.  I sometimes live too much in the future, looking forward to the next event.  Stop and smell the roses.
1966 - The U.S. recovered a hydrogen bomb it had lost off the coast of Spain. Really ?  I've lost my keys and occasionally my mind, but a hydrogen bomb?

Parenting/family -  It must be spring.  My neighbor is back outside with her two kids, up and down the sidewalk.  It is spring break, her daughter is in school, but her son is too young yet.  She is a stay at home mom.  That is a disappearing breed. Her husband is a cook at National Coney Island.  I wonder how they do it.  I do enjoy seeing the kids outside and the mom is always out there with them, remember those days?

After that there were monster movies on.  I loved those with the Ghoul, oh, and The Twilight Zone.  The television was still relatively new phenomenon, and still in black and white but no reruns yet.  So after Dad’s great hot dog lunch, if there was not a sports game on I might be able to watch some TV  unless a friend called on the phone hanging in the kitchen on the wall or came over to play. Life was simple then.

April 6, 2015 Monday

Get Fit!
Did a simple stretch  with Karen to get back into the routine.  Really going to try for that walk today!

Psalm 18:1-3 and 46  "The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock!  Exalted be God my Savior!" Sounds like a great Easter message right out of the old testament - Psalms.  I pray that your faith has been lifted by Easter and that you continue to build on that strength. He is risen indeed Alleluia!

On this day:
2009 - Yep April in Michigan, it snowed and I had to go to the airport at 1AM to pick up Nicole and Craig coming back from Florida.  It is opening day today and supposed to be 61.  Sometime it is ok to be in Michigan.

1789 - The first U.S. Congress began regular sessions at the Federal Hall in New York City. Lets see what pay they received for their jobs....
  • During the Constitutional Convention, Benjamin Franklin considered proposing that elected government officials not be paid for their service. Other Founding Fathers, however, decided otherwise.
  • From 1789 to 1855, members of Congress received only a per diem (daily payment) of $6.00 while in session, except for a period from December 1815 to March 1817, when they received $1,500 a year. Members began receiving an annual salary in 1855, when they were paid $3,000 per year. Only a fool allows people to give themselves raises. I like that Benjamin Franklin.
  • Parenting/Family
Family is far different today than it was when I was growing up.  But it started with my generation - moving to other states too distant to stay in touch.  Now we have social media.  I love it, I can see how life is for cousins that I forgot existed.  There is always a bright side to everything.  Nicole and I were able to share church with my nieces and nephew and I took Mom so she had all of her grandchildren with her.  Wish I had remembered to take a picture.

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties (excerpt)

Saturday afternoon television was great.  Of course American Bandstand was a must.  You could watch your favorite performers and identify with your favorite dance couple.  I think a lot of us learned some of our dance moves from that Philadelphia group of teenagers. I learned the Stroll, the Calypso and the Twist watching the TV. We all wished we could be on that show.  The girls all wore skirts and heels and the guys had on sport coats and ties, Emily Post was still hanging on in this year.  They had the rating board on the records every week that were the Top Ten.  That’s how we knew which records to get at the record store.  The stars were all on Bandstand.  The Everly Brothers, The Drifters, Chubby Checker and all the stars that were anybody were on Bandstand

    April 5, 2015 Sunday ! Easter Sunday

He is Risen!  A blessed Easter to everyone.  Going to church to celebrate the day my savior rose from the dead so that I too, will be raised to life eternal!  I am looking forward to singing all the joyful hymns reserved for this day. Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia!  He is risen indeed!

    On this day;
I hid Nicole's Easter basket.  Old habits die hard.  She has gone ahead to serve at church, I will pick up Mom from the nursing home and bring her out.  My niece Lindsey and her husband Scott will join us there.  Later Nicole and I will go to friends that we have shared our faith with for years, for dinner and Easter joy.  I have done these things all my life on Easter.  A few things change but not the joy that we as Christians share on our namesake's day.

Enjoy the Day!  Make it Memorable!  Happy Birthday to Robin and Tom!

    Aprpil 4, 2015 Saturday

    Get Fit
I had to have a procedure in the hospital yesterday, had some unidentified spots in my lungs.  Being in good health doesn't always mean you won't get something.  I do believe that you recover faster and keep a better outlook if you are in good health.  I feel like a truck hit me this morning but Monday I will get back on track with exercising.  Plan on staying in your routine!

Ephesians 3:20-21 "Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever."  Amen. Replacing the fear of the law is a gift from God in love that Jesus had for us in giving his life and the peace we know that salvation is ours. Praise be to God.

    On this day:
2007 - My daughter was in college getting a degree in education. "They" must have riled me up.  I quipped this in my journal; When will the uneducated masses finally realize that the best thing you can put into a classroom is a well educated teacher?  This opens a lot of lines of thought, but what comes to mind now is: Why can't they make master degrees available to teachers that are not paid well enough to afford them?

1687 - King James II ordered that his declaration of indulgence be read in church.  As a Lutheran this really interests me.

Parenting/Family Nicole got up at 5:30 to take me to the hospital for my test yesterday and my brother and sister came to sit with me too.  It was a longer (8 hrs) time than we expected.  It makes you feel so much better to know there are loved ones watching over you.

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties (excerpt)
When I got home I rushed in the side door and up the two steps into the kitchen.  I could smell the hotdogs cooking.  Dad had won a hotdog cooker at some event he had been at.  Other than barbequeing  it is the only other thing I recall him cooking.  Oh except his wonderful chocolate malted milks, if you call that cooking.  Anyway, the hotdog cooker was an electric thing, the size of a shoebox with electric prongs sticking out opposite of each other.  You took the hotdog and stuck one end on the one prong and then arched it up to attach to the prong on the other side.  After loading it up with 6 or 8 hotdogs you closed the lid and waited for that metallic hot dog smell to fill the air.  They did actually taste like electricity, but Dad thought it was great and it became a regular Saturday lunch item a long with an RC cola.

    Geography[edit]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.17 square miles (8.21 km2), of which 3.12 square miles (8.08 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.[1]
The village is situated on an expansive plateau, along with much of Northern Michigan. The Boardman River runs through the village. The primary geography of the north and east of the village proper is flat with gentle hills, with a large amount of farmland. To the south and east, it is noticeably steeper in elevation, with larger amount of water present in the form of streams, to the north a larger amount of water is present in the form of lakes.
The primary constructors of Kalkaska's geographical make-up are ancient glaciers, along with the majority of the entire state of Michigan. Glaciers scoured the surface of Michigan back during the Ice Age, creating small hills called drumlins, along with valleys and basins and the water that currently occupies them. This process is called glaciation.
Kalkaska experiences a notable amount of snowfall as it is located in a snowbelt that receives heavy amounts of lake effect snow from Lake Michigan.
Kalkaska is considered part of Northern MichiganA lot to see in Kalkaska County - we will expand.

Enjoy the Day!  Make it Memorable!  Happy Birthday Rebecca!

April 2, 2015 Thursday - Maundy Thursday (Maundy - command)

Get Fit  I did some aerobics with Richard.  Disco to be precise.  Unfortunately my 15 lb cat ( a force to be reconded with) was doing yoga for 20 minutes in the middle of my exercise floor.  Stretch and turn and roll and stretch.  He obviously doesn't remember disco, he is only 4.

Matthew 22:37-40 - Today is a day of commandments.  A command to commune with the Lord regularly and with one another.  A command to love God and one another.  We can never hear this enough.  Jesus spent his last night with his disciples serving and loving them.  Because He loves us we should do the same.

    On this day:
2005 - This was the month that I started my traveling on the internet.  I began my journey in Asunción Paraguay.  I went to the library and found a book someone had written on a visit there and also found a CD of the music from Paraguay.  It has been 15 years and I still love it and am much better informed of the world geography and cultures.  I am on my 4th world go around and have taken a group of friends with me that last 6 years.  It is the last thing I blog about here and we are in the not so remarkable Kalkaska Michigan this month, but hey, you never know.

1513 - Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon sighted Florida. The next day he went ashore. And so began Spring break!

Parenting - My brother and sister are coming down for a couple days to be with Nicole and I while I have this lung biopsy done tomorrow.  I won't lie, I am nervous.  Many people are praying for me and hoping for a good diagnosis.  Thank you all.  Probably will miss the blog tomorrow, catch you Saturday.

At 12 or 13 your conversation skills aren’t all that great.  You have gone past that childhood banter but haven’t reached the adult know how.  You are stuck in the early dweeb days of teenagers.

    April 1, 2015 Wednesday April Fool's Day!

    Get Fit
Abs and arms this morning.  I have graduated to 5 lb weights so I feel the workouts again.  Keep up your strength!

Ephesians 3;7-8   Speaks  "of the boundless riches of Christ."  The study writer today talked of all that you know that is wonderful, everything of this world that you love - will pass away. That is why you should know the Creater.  He has  boundless riches that he wants to share with you into eternity.

    On this day:
2004 - It was Uncle Marty's 49th birthday. He was in the hospital and had a craniotomy? the day before after an aneurism had stolen part of his brain.  Nicole and I went to see him and sing happy birthday.  He never missed our birthdays, it seemed appropriate.  He was a great character, we loved him.
2004 - Gateway Inc. announced that it would be closing all of its 188 stores on April 9.  I think this was the computer company, but not sure.  have to look.

Parenting/Family - I have mentioned that my house is always full.  My husband's friend, Marty, moved in when Nicole was two.  He had an apartment fire and was looking for a new place.  He stayed here 7 years.  He was a strong influence on Nicole - taught her everything he knew about sports and now she knows everything.  He also paid the kids for "clean plates" at dinner.   Nicole also learned how to clean her room from Uncle Marty.  (April fools)

Come Get These Memories - of the Sixties
I immediately wondered why no one had asked me if I lived close to church.  Wasn’t I pretty?  I guess no one thought so.  Judy was real pretty.  She had very soft light blond hair and a real perfect nose and teeth and she never had a pimple.  She had a really cute figure, smaller than me and shorter.  She was in every way more attractive to boys then I was.  Brenda Lee was singing – I Want to Be Wanted.

    Kalkaska Michigan
    Kalkaska, MI
This was the suggested location for this month.  We will have to look hard to fill the month, it is a small community.  But the travelers group might just actually travel to this place!

Enjoy the Day!  Make it Memorable!  Happy Birthday Marty ^
