September 7, 2015 Monday #3mile#goodname#recovery#skeleton

Get Fit
Getting in another walk today, training for my 5k.  My mom's assisted living is 1.5 miles from here so I can walk there, visit and walk home - waalah!  3 mile walk.

Get Faith
Proverbs 22:1  "A good name is more desirable than great riches;  to be esteemed is better than silver or gold."  Ok, I think the best name to be esteemed is God - or Jesus - or Spirit.  I guess they are referring to us being good people who, when mentioned are mentioned in good ways.

On this day
1981 - I flew in from Chicago after and an amazing long weekend of Offshore boat racing and friends.   It is so anti-climatic to return home after 5 or 6 days of huge activity, very much like our recent trip to Scotland.  I am still recovering from that.

1880 - George Ligowsky was granted a patent for his device that threw clay pigeons for trapshooters.   Hey Don is this guy by any chance a relative?

Parenting
I love this from Gods  Little Devotional Book "The family tree is worth bragging about if it has consistently produced good timber, and not just nuts."  We have all of that in both sides of my family history.  The Scottish side is documented but the German side is only alluded to.  Who do you have in your family - skeleton in the closet?

Book Club
The Other Irish by Karen McCarthy.  not much reading time this weekend, hope to get back to it!  Great read!

Isaszeg Hungary because this place is in the news right now, I'd like to know why, checking history.

September 6, 2015 Sunday #run#love#UncleHnk#childhood#history#computerfail

Get Fit
My nieces are both out running this morning, getting ready for the next event.  I will be going to the mall to help my friend buy his granddaughter school clothes, so I will get a walk in.  So much for not supporting retail on Sunday.

Get Faith
Yesterday, I went to a church to see our interim pastor marry his sweetheart.  I love a good love story.  He is from Latvia, lives in Canada and took an interim position in a church near ours.  He met a lovely lady and they fell in love.  Both have grown children who all attended the service.  The new pastor at that church was young and started out by taking a selfie with the couple to post on facebook as he checked in the event!  It was a blended group, over 100 people from both congregations.  It was a truly heart warming wedding.  God's blessings to Krister and Lela as they celebrate their lives together.

On this day
1979 - My Uncle Hank called and told me to come over and see their friend Hilda's old car.  It was maybe from the 30's and completely restored.  They made me go with them, my aunt and uncle and Hilda to dinner and for a drive in that old car.  They were so thrilled to do that and I am so glad I went and have that memory.  They are all gone and I love them still! RIP

Parenting
"A happy childhood is one of the best gifts that parents have it in their power to bestow."  From God's Little Devotional Books for Mom's.  Ideally, it is a wonderful thing to have your child grow up in a circle of family and friends that enjoy life together.  Ideally, it is a wonderful thing to send or take your child on adventures that enhance their youth and let them dream of who they want to be.  Ideally, it is a wonderful thing to be financially able to provide these things to a child in good health.  Many don't have that opportunity.  Find a way to help those who want the same things that you have given your child - support camp for example.  Living Waters - Stony Lake.

Book Club the Other Irish by Karen McCarthy
I did get a little reading in.  I like how she takes one or more people and follows their heritage back and forward.  You get a great picture of how things effect people in their lives.  You might really want to read this!

September 5, 2015 Saturday #5K#judge#Ziggy#coonskincap#silo/church

Get Fit
So my niece reminded me that I am doing a 5K with her mother in a couple of weeks and I better get cracken'!  So I started today with a 2 mile walk.  Going to find a 5 mile target (with my car) so I can work up to the five - wish me luck.

Get Faith
1 Timothy 4:12 "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." Again, do as I say.  I do try to be an example of Christian living in how I worship God and treat everyone I come into contact with.  I don't believe anyone should be looked down on -the person that does that is standing on a very wobbly perch I think.

On this day
1978 - Labor Day weekend was over and I had to go to Royal Oak and pick up my little dog Ziggy.  He was a great, smart little dog, 1/2 Cairn terrier and 1/2 West Highland.  I had bought him for my brother Mark, but he ended up being my dog.  Mom was good enough to keep him on long weekends when we would be out on the boat.  Pets are like kids, you have to be settled to have them - I wasn't.

1774 - The first session of the U.S. Continental Congress convened in Philadelphia. The delegates drafted a declaration of rights and grievances, organized the Continental Association, and elected Peyton Randolph as the first president of the Continental Congress.  Todays congress would never get by the grievances.

Parenting
Teaching a child to be self confident is a fine line in them not becoming entitled I think.  Maybe the trick is to have them know that they can achieve anything they put their mind to but never think it will be easy or immediate.  It is hard to not make excuses to/for your child when what they want is not available NOW.  What are your views?

Book Club  The Other Irish by Karen McCarthy Not a relative.
This is turning out to be a great historical read - Andrew Jackson, Sam Houston and Davy Crockett like you never knew!

Isaszeg Hungary

Sightseeing[edit]

On the top of the cemetery hill stands the old parochial church of the village. It was last rebuilt in gothic style. However, the foundations of the old rotunda is visible north and south of the nave of the church. The recent church was built by the eastern extension (apsis) and by western extension (nave and choir) of the original rotunda. The church has western tower with rectangular lower part and octagonal upper part, as in many Hungarian old churches (for example: Nagymaros, Csurgó, Aracs, Somogyvámos, Szeged - Dömötör tower, Felsőörs)
Rotunda - Öskü, Hungary.  Unusual looking church, but glad to see it!

September 4, 2015 Friday #heavy#3children#achievement#babies#ancestry

Get Fit
I didn't feel like it but I did a series of weight lifting this morning.  I always believe it will make me feel more energetic and that is usually correct.

Get Faith
Psalm 127 4&5 " Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one's youth.  Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them."  It doesn't mention that from the woman's viewpoint, but most women will say that children are the best things in their lives - which doesn't say much about the husband.  Christians need to have or adopt at least 3 children to promote the faith.  Not sure if that matters to you - I chose to teach sunday school to help with that as I only had two.

On This Day
1972  Soren, a friend from Denmark was staying at my house, we took his laundry to the Laundromat and then went to Moms for lunch and a walk to the park.  I wrote that day about getting back to writing and how I loved it.  I have a million started books, but now I actually finished one.  Whew.

1972 - Swimmer Mark Spitz captured his seventh Olympic gold medal in the 400-meter medley relay event at Munich, Germany. Spitz was the first Olympian to win seven gold medals. He got his bucket list done early, huh?  What a hottee he was!

Parenting
Have to share a quote from God's Little Devotional Book - "Women should not have children after 35,  35 are enough."  When I was young I read a book called Baby Island (I was 8 or so) and decided that I would have at least 20 babies.  Well that didn't work out - but I sure love the ONE I have, and all the rest that I see, even that little one that cried for 8 hours on the way home from Scotland.  Pam and I were weepy just listening to it.  I was 38 when I had Nicole and it wasn't too late!

Book Club- The Other Irish by Karen F. McCarthy
Started this book last night that was given to me by a good friend, Virg.  It is a history of the Scots and Irish and coming to America.  Looks like it will be a great read!  Thanks Virg!

First session of Pilates since getting home.  Nothing like the hundreds to remind you of you abs.

2 Thessalonians 3:9  We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate.    This is one of the reasons I have chosen to more act on my faith than share it, except for this.

On This Day
1967 - Jill, Waynette and I just rode around in the car.  Back in those days the gas was not an issue, our lives centered around drive-in food joints, we didn't have social media.
1967 - The TV game show "What's My Line?" broadcast its final episode. The show aired over 17 years on CBS. I loved this show!

Parenting
The best example your children will ever have is you.  It could be a good example or a bad example.  A child can choose to follow a parent into a career or pick welfare.  A child can live with obesity or pick good health for themselves.  A child can learn respect for the law or have on going run-ins with the police.  They can fend for themselves or cry for help.  Drugs or clean living.  Choices are something that your children learn from the parents or others in their lives. There are exceptions to his rule also.  What do you think?

Book Club
Hope I can get back to having time to read.  Right now I am so excited to hear back from all of you about how much you are enjoying my book - Come Get These Memories of the Sixties by Nancy McCarthy, out on ebook now and soon in print.  Can't believe I am a published author!.

Back to normal, cat is back.  Did the dancers legs workout.  Not sure what I'm hoping for here, but still trying!

Get Faith
Ecclesiastes chapter 3:4 - a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance.  Life is a mixture of all of these emotions.  Recently, while I was in Scotland a dear sweet gal passed away after a long battle with cancer. I wept so many miles away when I read it on my phone.  I remembered times when I had laughed with her, she was a very happy person and easy to laugh with.  We have mourned the loss of other friends together and I hope she is dancing now with the angels.  Life is better with faith.

On this day
2009 - On this day -  I met my friend Don at Mr. B's in Royal Oak.  We had been friends when we were teenagers,  our lives went separate ways.  When Don's wife Pam passed away, (who I had introduced him to) he was looking for people he knew on Facebook and found me.  On this day after 41 years we got together and resumed the same chatty, friendly relationship we had before, like there had never been  a separation, except we had so much to catch up on.  Our families blend very well and Don and I spend a lot of time enjoying life together.  So glad you looked me up Don.  This is a repost from 2013 and worth reposting today!

1666 - The Great Fire of London broke out. The fire burned for three days destroying 10,000 buildings including St. Paul's Cathedral. Only 6 people were killed. This is amazing, only 6 killed!?

Parenting
I know its a cat, but we are so happy to have found Nola after he had been out lost for a week.  He lost about 3 or 4 lbs and is covered with fleas, but other than that is well.  It was so upsetting wondering where he was and what had happened to him - can't imagine if he had been a child.  Pray for those looking for lost family.

Book Club
Started reading Then/Again by Diane Keaton, but lost interest half way through.  Hope my book is not boring.  Have another book to start - The Other Irish by Karen McCarthy that Virg gave me to read.

Get Fit
I'm back from Scotland.  Took a walk this morning as if I hadn't been walking for the last 9 days.  But this was a mission, still looking for our lost kitty that escaped our house.  Hope your exercise program is for a better reason - keep moving!

Get Faith
Luke 6:38 - "Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you." Jesus's own words.  Do you often think, when being generous - of the least amount that you can give and still be considered generous?  I think we all do and that is what this is about.  We may receive the least of that generosity that is available to us.  Something to think about.

On this day
1974 - It was the Memorial Day weekend and 8 of us went to Toronto in a bus size motor home to see Crosby Stills Nash and Young's last concert.  We were a lot of good friends that partied together quite often so we got along pretty well.  It was quite an experience taking the huge vehicle through the Toronto streets and looking for parking when you were not experienced or prepared.

1878 - Emma M. Nutt became the first female telephone operator in the U.S. The company was the Telephone Dispatch Company of Boston. Who remembers Lilly Tomlins character operator?  "One ringy dingy...two....

Parenting
I will admit that I worried that I had spoiled Nicole by giving her too much.  She likes the good stuff, shoes, clothes, vacations, food etc. so I thought she might end up "me" oriented.  God has blessedly interceded on her behalf - she is kinder and more giving than I am.

Come Get These Memories of the Sixties by Nancy McCarthy - now available on E-book .
