This is my last blog for 10 days as I am leaving for Scotland on vacation.  Please visit me on again on the 1st of September and enjoy the week!

Because I will be sitting so much today - I redid Jillian.  It is a great cardiac workout.  Stay fit and keep up your workouts, whatever you are doing and continue to eat right!  Do as I say, I'll be in Scotland eating Haggis.

Proverbs 22:6  "Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it."  So, would you not train your children to eat, dress and learn until they are old enough to make that decision?   Then why wait for them to pick their own religion?  If you believe in any religion, why wouldn't you start your children in it?  Maybe your beliefs need to be revisited. Faith, in any study they have done is the best form of well being for everyone.  Check it yourself.  God doesn't mind being questioned, He is used to it.


On this day
2013  This was not a happy day.  We lost 2 people that we dearly loved.  That is where your faith comes in.  Both of these women were faithful and led faithful lives - we know they are in good hands.  I can think of Hilary and my Aunt Theresa and think, they are happy where they are, even though I miss them, I know I will see them again.  If you believe the same of your loved ones then your faith is intact and you should act on it.  Thank God for loving memories.

Parenting
We love to see the world through the eyes of our children.  How many have taken their kids to the zoo, museum, camping to experience what you value.  Today I get to take Nicole to the land of our ancestors, Scotland.  My fathers family were all born in Scotland, lived and worked in Glasgow and my grandparents didn't come here till they were 60.  They went back to visit and always wanted to return.  I know why and I want Nicole to have the opportunity to feel that "being home" that I had when I went.

In summer, all our families had vacation and weekend plans. Judy and her mom and dad would pick me up, and we would go to Half Moon Lake for the day. They had a boat that Judy’s dad hooked up to the car and hauled out to the lake. It was a long ride on a two-lane road and seemed to take forever. Sometimes, her brother, Brad, would be with us, but he was a little older than us and didn’t want to be seen in our company. He and his buddies treated us like we were a pain in the neck. Her aunt and uncle went too, and sometimes, others would be there. They were a really nice-looking couple, like the ones on TV.

Worked out with Jillian.  Tried to go the limit as I will be out of my gym (living room) for the next week or so.  I did make it through 2 full circuits, which, if you have worked out with her is an achievement - I think.

On this day
2010  I had a young man staying at my home for awhile.  I wanted so much to help him straighten out for himself and his family.  On this day he took off on my daughters expensive bike with her laptop while I was out at the store.  I was able to catch up with him and got the items back, but it was a stressful day.  He is still on my prayer list daily.


2010 - The last American combat brigade exited Iraq after more than seven years after the U.S.-led invasion began. At least this war was over. kind of.


Parenting
There are some cases where parents are at a loss to help/fix a child.  As in the above case, he had been an abused baby -adopted and raised by a great family, extended family, church and assisted by loving people all around.  He still can't manage to get his life together.  Anybody got a magic potion?  I gave him groceries this week hoping to keep him alive till he comes into his own.

2009 -  I decided to try on  line dating and had signed up with match.com.  I met many guys for drinks and they were all very nice and gentlemanly, but they were looking for serious commitments and I as usual was looking for a friend.  So I quit.  I don't know what I thought I was going to achieve.


1856 - Gail Borden received a patent for his process of condensing milk by vacuum. This was a good thing to do!  Think of all the milk we drink.


Parenting
I love the movie Pay it Forward.  It embodies the good in the human spirit.  Make a difference day is a good practice that someone started a few years ago.  I challenged my Sunday school students to come back the next week and tell me what they had done for someone else, not for pay and they we discussed how that made them feel.  Nothing they hadn't heard before but it is always a good thing to remind them of.  Let's hear it for the 30,000 youth that went into Detroit last month and cleaned up neighborhoods, etc.  I know they felt good about their works.  How about just asking your elderly neighbor if they need something from the store?

It seemed though that I enjoyed being the street tough that I had become, but every night, when I got in bed, Joey came to comfort me, hold me in his arms, and tell me to be careful who I got close to. He was my daddy and would always be there for me. He gave me love before Grandma came in and got into bed, and I would fall asleep exhausted. Sometimes, he looked like Wolf or sometimes Ricky,  but he showed up when I needed him.

Amsterdam Airport

Officially known by the name Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, this airport is of great importance in Europe. It is an international airport found in the Netherlands and is located twenty minutes from Amsterdam city and approximately nine miles south-west of the center of Amsterdam in Haarlemmermeer municipality. This is an international airport connecting to many notable European airports. It is the home base for many intercontinental airlines such as KLM, Arkefly, Transavia, Amsterdam Airlines and Martinir.

The name of the airport, Schiphol, was derived from a former fortification called Fort Schiphol which was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam defense works.  Before 1852 there was a large lake at the Haarlemmermeer polder where the airport now lies. The shallow waters of the lake would often experience sudden violent storms which claimed many ships. Indeed this was the reason why the lake was reclaimed. Schiphol translates to ‘Ship grave’ in English, referring to the many ships that were lost in the area.  I will be here a couple hours on Friday.

1 John 5:4  "for everyone born of God overcomes the world.  This is the victory that has overcomes the world, even our faith."  I don't think our victory is what we achieve here, but what we do here certainly counts.  If you know that the greatest gift you ever wanted - love, health, joy whatever, was given to you wouldn't you want to show your appreciation to the giver?

2006 -  Nicole was getting ready to move back to Albion for her senior year.  The process always included spending the last time home with friends.  On this day it was Craig and Lawrence.


2004 - Donald Trump unveiled his board game (TRUMP the Game) where players bid on real estate, buy big ticket items and make billion-dollar business deals Maybe this ploy is just another board game, get it?


Parenting
This is the time when you are either buying all the clothes and school supplies for children and/or all the dorm supplies and massively expensive books for college.  Enjoy the small bills now.

It is hard to decide who you are at thirteen. You take a lot of cues from the world and the music around you. When Ricky sang “Travelin’ Man,” I wished I were that girl from Polynesia that he sang of. Then I started wondering why it was okay for a guy to have a girl in every port, but we know what we call those girls that do the same. Early on, I realized I didn’t fall for the double standard. Maybe I wouldn’t have listened to Daddy either.

Ecclesiastes 3:4  "a time to weep, a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance."  Everyday gives us a new opportunity to do any of the above.  I look at all of those behaviors as healing processes.  God is with you in all circumstances to comfort and enjoy, he loves you - make Him part of your life.


On this day
2001 This weekend for a lot of years was the soccer tournament at Nicole's high school.  Teams came over for 2 full days Saturday and Sunday of soccer.  I was involved with the Mom and Dad's club and we opened the concession stand and worked it all weekend.  I might have been the head of it because I don't recall going home.  Nicole even brought me food so I didn't have to eat hot dogs all weekend.  It was a great community of parents that worked together and one of the dads even brought in a cooler with beer at the end of the day - boy that tasted good.
1859 - A hot air balloon was used to carry mail for the first time. John Wise left Lafayette, IN, for New York City with 100 letters. He had to land after only 27 miles. so much for this air mail.


Parenting/community
Watching the morning show today and they talked about what gives the best feedback for peace and happiness in your life.  Community with others - school, sports, friendships were all up there but the most life improvement and daily support came from belief in a religion.  I love hearing that.  Share that with your kids!  Expose them to Faith.  Your choice which one.

      I missed my daddy.  I thought that if he had stayed I would have been a different girl.  Daddy  surely would have put his foot down about me being out so much.  He would not have liked the way I looked with lipstick and ratted up hair and tight pants.  Would he have made Mom take me to the beauty shop and get a regular young lady hairdo, would he make me go to the store and buy pretty dresses and cute little pump shoes to wear?  Would I have done it because Daddy wanted me to?  I always thought so, then.

Music in Amsterdam

The Dutch are great music lovers. In older times, before the era of Internet and television, hundreds of thousands of Dutch people would every week meet and sing in local choirs. Globalization and new media changed the lifestyles of people in the Netherlands as in any other country, but the Dutch could not live without music. It is not by accident, that Dutch electronic giant Philips (together with Sony) developed a musical CD and a digital way of recording music. Nicole and I went to church today.  Pastor Beebe was on vacation and Pastor Hendricks was subbing.  He related his near death experience and how it has increased his desire to work harder for Christ.  HIs mission is the college campuses.  Please pray for his work in this hard to reach ministry to college students.


On this day
2000 -  I picked up Nicole, Maddy and Lauren from basketball practice and Nicole had her temporary license - her permit to drive and she practiced all the time.   It was important, these girls probably spent the most time in her car with her later when she got her license and own car.  It certainly helps when they can transport themselves to practice, games, school etc.  But it is an added worry and added insurance expense.  Nicole, fortunately turned into an excellent driver.  What has your experience been?


1990 - McDonalds opened their first fast food restaurant in Moscow.  Spread the joy!


Parenting
Your child driving a car is an all new experience.  It takes worrying to an all new level, especially in todays world of phone distraction.  I saw a horrific accident on Lakeshore in Grosse Pointe Farms yesterday and, sorry but my first thought was - I bet someone was on the phone.  A Mom in one car was killed her 2 children survived, with non life threatening injuries, the other woman in the other car is in critical condition.  They said they thought she had a medical problem, I wonder if they found her phone.

    Our gang walked the streets a lot back then.  It was nothing to walk from 7 Mile to 6 Mile and back again, but most of our activities were on 6 Mile or McNichols depending on where the street sign was.  We hung out at one of those white porcelain palace hamburger joints that were so popular during those days.  That one was called Gil’s.  We would sit on the red plastic swirly stools at the counter and drink coffee until they kicked us out.  That only happened if real customers came in.  And we fed the jukebox.

Romans 15:7  "Accept one another, then, just as Christ accepted you, in order to bring praise to God."
Acceptance, I think, is one of the greatest things you can do for another.  To accept someone as they are is to say - you are okay, just the way you are.  The normal outcome of this behavior is for that person to feel better about themselves and strive to be better yet maybe.  God wants you to know, He accepts you as you are AND He knows who you are and loves you.


On this day
1998 - Nicole and I were in the upper peninsula.  We woke up in Copper Harbor, went into a copper mine, and then drove down to Iron Mountain and over to Manistique where we spent the night.  We have tried to drive the entire shoreline of Michigan and have almost succeeded, but not together.  It is truly a beautiful state - you should go see it!  By the Banks of Gitchegoomie (spl)  Nicole and I tried to commit this to memory, haha.


1057 - Macbeth, the King of Scotland, was killed by the son of King Duncan. Important info for our trip to Scotland this week, we leave Friday.

The writer from the devotional I am using told a story of Samuel Blackwell whose children were barred from public school.  He and his wife homeschooled the children who went on to become doctors, teachers, journalist and in general had successful lives.  I have to quote a well used line here - "when life hands you lemons, make lemonade".  For more information read Samuel Blackwell's story.

       One day after she had been to my house, I was walking Judy back to Curtis and as we turned to wave goodbye I noticed a pink Cadillac with the big fins turned the corner and stopped.  He leaned across the front seat and threw the door open.  I thought it was someone I knew, or he was looking for directions, but no, he didn’t have any pants on and had a giant erection.  I went to the lawn above the sidewalk and started my best track star running.  It was 2 blocks to my house and as I got closer I could see my brother sitting on the front porch.  I started yelling to him about the car and he must have got the message.  He jumped up and ran to his car in the front of the house.  The pink Cadillac guy saw him and squealed tires past our house.  Adam took off too, but didn’t catch him.  My mom took me to the police station to look at mug shots but they didn’t have a picture of what I saw of the guy.  I think they later traced the “noticeable” car to the guy and I believe he had priors, so I never had to go to court to identify it.

Did some weights with Denise this morning.  I think many people save the workout for the weekend, I like the more peaceful walking for my Saturday workout, but then I'm retired.  Sorry.

Jeremiah 1:5  "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart: I appointed you as a prophet to the nations."  God was obviously talking to Jeremiah, but he has a plan for you also, maybe you just don't know it yet.  Stay open to opportunities to share life and make it better for someone else.  To everything a purpose.


On this day;
1996  Nicole had another friend by the name of Joe, he lived around the block and was here a lot of the time.  So, when we decided to go to the show that night I of course had Joe check with his Mom and took him with us.  We saw Twister.  I swear, if I knew that it was going to be on television a million times I would never have paid to see it.  It was a good movie - the first time.

Parenting
I love my friends and I love that when Nicole got home after being away at camp all summer, her two oldest friends came and sat out in the driveway all evening chatting.  It just seems so normal to see Nicole, Craig and Jameson, sitting in the driveway laughing and talking like they have for 25 years.
I think it is important for kids to have life time friends, so think about your kids going to a school close to home and a church so that as they get older they can be in charge of which friends they choose to hang with, and hope you have taught them well.

     When the summer came School Is Out  by Gary US Bonds was playing on the transistor radio as  Carol, Judy and I walked along the street.  We were still young enough to be silly and dance and sing at the top of our lungs, until we saw a cute guy looking at us.  Then we morphed right into those sullen, white lipsticked girls that prowled the streets.   We had silk scarfs tied over our ratted hair, capri length tight pants and white Ked tennis shoes, although Lord knows WE never played tennis.  Not when anyone was looking.   With all that free time you would think our parents would worry about their young daughters being out on the streets, it wasn’t the same then, but occasionally one creep would show up.

James 5:16  " Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.  The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. "  Admitting our sins or errors is the hard part.  Having someone you can confide in is paramount.  I have many friends that I believe are powerful prayers so when they say they will pray for me - I know I am well covered.  I hope they feel the same about my prayers for them.


On this day:
1992 - My husband Mark had taken the boat store demo, which was a 36' Four Winns.  It was a beauty and my father in law was a gem to let us use it.  The kids thought it was theirs.  On this day Mark had taken the boat to Metro and we spent the weekend on it with friends in their boats all around us.  There was a race on Lake St Clair on Sunday,  What a great memory.   In the evening Mark and I went to Bobby Moore's Race Rock restaurant on Groesbeck, a short lived boat racing memorabilia bar, for race meetings.  I believe the Logan's watched the kids for us - they were great friends.


1992 - Woody Allen began legal action to win custody of his three children. A judge ruled against Allen in 1993.  He wasn't having as much fun as we were.


Parenting
Although Aaron was 14 and Nicole 7, old enough to be left alone we seldom did.  There was always plenty of good family and friends for them to spend time with if we went out.  Maybe we were overprotective, but how are you with valuables?  Do you leave them out in public for someone to steal or abuse?

I had developed a noticeable attitude when not around her and had a dark side I don’t think she knew about.  I started picking friends from the “greaser” crowd, rather than the girls that would be picked for a sorority in high school.  There were far more boys in my circle than girls.

Proverbs 1:5 - "Let the wise listen"  Do you think that this means having your children listen to you?  That might be the problem.  I have found that listening to people is much more informative than what I have to say.   The Bible tells us repeatedly that God hears the pleas and prayers of his people - go ahead and talk to Him, He is listening.


On this day:
1989 - I was busy - working on the offshore newsletter - which was a full time job and planning a play at church for an intergenerational evening at church, plus I had a houseful of neighbor kids.  I love being busy, still.  How about you?  Do you plan on doing something everyday or wait and see if something comes up?  I'm planning on yard work today, but you can never tell.


1877 - Thomas Edison invented the phonograph and made the first sound recording. Thank you Tom!  Read my book.

Have you taught your child the importance of truth and honesty?  I watched a bit on TV this morning about a young man that downloaded someone else's resume to get a job.  He confided to people in a restaurant about his bogus resume and then met with the employer at the table next to them.  The key was to find out if those people would say anything.  Only one group of 4 ladies my age told the employer about what the young man told them.  Two lessons here - if you are a thief, keep your mouth shut and for sure never tell "your mother" about it.  But then your mother probably was ok with it.

     “Gram, you still have your pearls and hat on” I would exclaim, knowing she would issue a whole lot of Gaelic that I couldn’t understand. 

     Another time I left a line of shoes across the floor.  Now you might think this a cruel trick but I knew she would never, with her heavy sliding gait, trip over those shoes.  She flipped on the overhead bedroom light and looked at the trap I had set for her.  She looked lovingly at me, shook her head and threatened me with some never fulfilled promise of a beating.  I think she loved the game we played and set me up as much as I did her.  She was from a generation and place that always wore a dress and pearls, wouldn’t think of going on the bus downtown without gloves and always wore good walking shoes. Now the debate is whether to eat breakfast or not.  The latest study showed that people that don't eat breakfast lose more weight.  But is it healthy?  I would have to sleep till noon to not eat breakfast and then just start with lunch.  Is that what they are talking about?  I admit - when I was younger, out all night and sleep till noon - I was much thinner.  What do you think?

1986 - Who doesn't like Big Boy restaurants?  Mom and I took Nicole there for lunch, she was two.  There was a Big Boy at 9 and Jefferson forever but, it was sold.  We still have one at Vernier and Mack and also at 9 and Gratiot.  I remember when I was young the one at Grand River and Greenfield and the one out on Telegraph.  Some of them had drive-ins.  Which one did you go to?  Now I want a Slim Jim.  (for lunch)

On the same subject, they were talking about how they had sent home letters to parents whose children were obese, suggesting they alter their diet.  School lunches can't satisfy those kids.  What do you suppose happened?  Did the parents respond?  Did the kids lose weight?  No. Do you think the parents were thin?  I wonder if they ate breakfast and if so, what did they eat?

     I would already be in bed when Grandma would come down the hall and put on her nightgown in the light from the hall, not to wake me up.  She was older and on the heavy side so it took her a while to move around and find her clothes and hang up her dress and I would pretend to sleep while watching through mostly closed eyes.  When she would turn off the hall light and carefully find her way to the bed and lie down and pull up the covers, I would burst out laughing.

This is a well documented area back to ancient times.  Interesting history.

I did Abs of Steel this morning.  Nothing I do has been working to reduce my stomach.  The last thing I heard was it is stress.  Now that I can believe, so I am going to relax.  My niece Lindsey posts a lot of good info on exercising and dieting.  One post showed what a plate of food should look like.  It was half greens (salad) 1/4 carbs (rice) 1/4 protein (fish/meat).  It is a good standard to go by.  That. And relax.

Ecclesiastes 3:1,4  Most of us know this reading.  This study just mentions, there is a right time for everything: A time to laugh.  And the writer adds this.  Parenthood: that state of being better chaperoned than you were before marriage.  God also created our ability to laugh, to enjoy life and the world around us.

1985 - We took Aaron and Nicole to the Offshore race in Grand Haven.  It was their first race and Nicole was only 2 1/2 months old.  Aaron was 7 and looked like he was at Disney Land.  I took the neighbor girl, Carol for an extra set of arms.  Mark was working the race or maybe racing.  Family time.
1792 - King Louis XVI was taken into custody by mobs during the French Revolution. He was executed the following January after being put on trial for treason. Mob rule still prevails.


Parenting
I had always led a pretty exciting and fun life.  By the time I met Mark and had kids - his son Aaron and our Nicole, I was ready for family life.  I just felt that if we were still going to boat race it would be as a family.  The kids loved it and I didn't even miss the bar life.  I did note that Patrick and Norma were holding up the tradition on this year.  But sometimes we need a vacation from the kids, right?

     Living conditions had changed with Adam of course getting preferential treatment with his own room he had the big bedroom up front.  Mom had one bedroom and Martin still slept in a crib in her room.   I shared a bedroom with Grandma, when she was there.  Quite often she would pack her single small suitcase and get on a bus to someone else’s house, or they would pick her up.  She spent the most time with us though

I have a friend that used to row.  That is obviously good exercise judging by the imitation rowers on the market.  Sunday would be a perfect day to get a rowboat and enjoy nature and get some exercise at the same time.  Who do I know with a rowboat? or kayak?  Judy.

2 Corinthians 6:16  "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people."  Most people, the lucky ones to have a mom, dad or someone who truly cares for them know the peace that comes with going home.  Just being in the presence of someone who loves you more than life itself is a blessing.  God also waits for us and loves us more than life itself.

1983 - My cousin Kathy, sister Alice and I went to a wedding shower for my cousin Dan and his bride to be Lynn, at my cousin Earl and Donna's house.  This year the shower is for their daughter, but because of location and years we don't get invited anymore.  I love social media for this reason, I can see the offspring of my cousins and follow their lives, and I have a lot of cousins so I don't mind missing a few showers, but I wish them the best of everything life has to offer.


1893 - "Gut Holz" was published. It was America's first bowling magazine. I know gut is good, but is holz -holes?  Too important a fact to pass up today.


Parenting
I wonder if showers for weddings are going to go away.  Most everyone getting married, anymore, has been living in their own place and already has everything they need.  Excess seems like, well, excess.  Maybe a new idea would be to just contribute to their retirement account for a wedding shower present.  I do understand that in some economic situations - it is nice to get that toaster!.  "It's a toaster!"  oh wrong movie.

     Even though the home life was not the same, I didn’t run away.  That was just a fantasy.  My grandmother had moved in with us, to watch us kids and keep the house while Mom worked two 40 hour shifts at Federals.  The minimum wage was $1.00 an hour, so she worked as much as she could.  She tried to get home for dinner with us every day, but it didn’t always work.

1981  My racing friends and I were in Saugatuck.  The crew from Love It was racing and it was all very exciting. The 30' Catamaran hull had won several races and set a few speed records.  When the boats went out to Lake Michigan Lorna and I went out on a friends motor home with them to the beach to watch.  Not too far into the race Love It broke down, not unusual in off shore racing.  Lorna and I tried to get back to town - the local police said they would take us back.  So Lorna and I got into the back of the police car.  When they let us out in front of Coral Gables, Chuck was standing on the porch, white as a ghost.  Inside he asked me if I remembered I had his satchel in my purse.  "Oh yes, here, I said".  He glared at me.  Apparently he had some contraband in there - I was so naïve.


1844 - After the killing of Joseph Smith on June 27, Bringham Young was chosen to lead the Mormons. I should read this I know very little about the Mormon religion.


Parenting
Is your house peaceful or full of drama, anxiety and confrontations?  When life pours over into your home life, it is time to get the broom or maybe the Bible and clean up your attitudes and remember to love each other and spend time unwinding.  Note what Mother Teresa said above.  It starts at home.

     In the summer my backyard seemed to be a hangout for lost boys.  Hoop de do and Hoop de dah, were both actually Timmy’s, I have no idea where we came up with those names.  Then there was Keith and Tom and Darrel.  Oh, and of course my best buddy, Dennis who was always around.  He was the oldest and usually had some old car that we could drive around in, if we could find $5.00 to fill up the gas tank.  We had some very deep conversations back there, about sex, music, sex, sports, other people, sex, going into the army, sex, well you get the picture.  I was (I thought) just one of the guys. The summer of 61 gave us a lot of insight.  Mom still says one of those boys was living in the garage and sleeping in the car.  We were all kind of misfits that only seemed to fit in with ourselves.

1980 - my ex-husband Don called me and took me out to lunch.  I think I saw him a few times after this, but he still loved his bikes and I had gone in a different direction.  Too bad, he was hot.


1939 - Dinah Shore started her own show on the NBC Blue radio network who doesn't remember Dinah singing "See the USA in your Chevrolet" ? oh maybe anyone under 60.

The God's Little Devotional Book that I m sharing from relates a story on this day about an American woman driving in the European mountains with their child in the back seat.  The child cried and cried to come up in the front to sit with them and she almost let her, but thought better just seconds before an accident happened that would have probably taken the child's life had it been in the front seat.  She was the initial power behind mandatory child seats in cars. Go Mom's!

1979 - I was dating a guy that was friends with a wealthy guy that left his tab open to his friends to use at the bar, even when he wasn't there - I guess.  This Jim and I went to the bar this evening and that's when I heard him say "put it on Kenny's tab".  That was the last time I went out with him.  There is something wrong with that scenario - having someone else pay for your drinks when they aren't even there.

As I was getting in bed last night I heard kids outside yelling and playing and having a good time.  For a second I thought, who lets their kids play outside this late at night?  I fell right asleep.  It was only 10.  Today I remembered some summer nights when we spent the evening and into the nights in the yard with neighbors and kids too - it is summer.  How will they ever see fire flies?

      I did find the nerve to stand up in the last week of eighth grade in front of the class with Judy and Carol for a talent show in music class.  I had gone through my closet a dozen times looking for just the right outfit to wear.  I finally decided on a plaid pleated skirt in a light blue and yellow color with a three quarter length sleeve, white blouse with a round collar.  I was old enough to wear nylons with a garter belt and then put on white Ked tennis shoes.   I wore my hair in a not quite shoulder length page boy with bangs. It was a dirty dish water blond color.  At that time I hadn’t started wearing any makeup.  Judy and Carol and I had been practicing for weeks to perform on this day and I was really excited about it.  It might have been the last uncool thing I ever did. (right)

1977 - After work I went to Pete's mom and dads house.  Tatjiana and Erich had just returned back from Germany - it was their last trip there.  I feel it is important to remember this because none of that family is alive anymore and I don't know anyone that this would be important to, but me.  We had pizza to celebrate their safe arrival home.  RIP


1977 - U.S. President Carter signed the measure that established the Department of Energy. I guess it was one of those forgettable days in news too.


Parenting
Even bad parents can raise good kids.  You see it everyday.  Most parents want something better for their kids, want them to achieve more than they did.  I know I did.  I wanted Nicole and Aaron to have a happy stable home life, raised in the faith, the love of extended family and an education.  It is my greatest joy that they both had this, that and my book getting published. :)

     Mom had a big party for me to celebrate.  My friends and I, despite the skipping out of class and Pastor warning us about our attitude problems and asking us if we were getting anything out of our religious training, actually became members of Holy Cross Missouri Synod Lutheran church.  It may seem like it didn’t sink in, but along the way, in those dark times, I remembered.  My faith was a little mustard seed, but it was there.

1976 - When I worked at Quality we had really great clientele.  On this day I am reminded of Jo Schmidt and her husband that had an art gallery and hair salon on the other side of the state.  When they came over - Jo cut my hair and she was the best hairdresser I ever had.  Very nice people, remember them Xana?


1880 - The American Canoe Association was formed at Lake George, NY. Hey that's sounds like fun! Canoe anyone?

I saw a video on FB this morning where a dad was questioning his two little boys that were covered with paint. "Whose idea was this?"  "Do you think this was a good idea?"  "What should we do now?"  "Do you think you should get a time out?"  The boys were maybe 3 and 5 years old.  I thought the father was amazingly calm.  Maybe he figured his wife was going to get the job of cleaning them and the mess they made up.  "Do you think you should help Dad?"  He was actually enjoying the interrogating.  I figure the intense cleaning they were going to go through to get the paint out of their hair and off their faces etc. will be a long lasting lesson.  How would you handle it?

     Fortunately, I was forced to spend time at, and was confirmed in the church in the spring.    Judy and Juliette and I had white dresses on under our white confirmation gowns.  I was terrified, even though Pastor told us which questions he would ask us, we all knew that most of the 300 congregation members thought that we had memorized the entire catechism and did NOT know which question we would have to answer.    It was in the back of my head that he would surprise us with a new question. I was sure mine would be;

     “Jean could you please recite the Sixth commandment and Luther’s explanation of its meaning?” 

     And as an answer to my prayer – he never did ask anything other then what he said he would.  It probably would have looked as bad for him as it would have for us.  So, we were confirmed into the church.
