James chapter 1  "My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trial of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing...."  I notice the fact that he addresses both his brothers and his sisters in faith.  This wasn't always done in the Bible, even though women have had prominent places in our biblical history.  As the disciples went out to share the Gospel they needed strength and guidance from all of the new Christians, including women.  We are still a dominant force in the church and the full responsibility falls on us also because of that.  Be a woman of faith - or respect the women of faith if you are a man.  We share the Gospel and the work equally.

On this day
1990  Nicole and I went over to Mom's house to feed her cat Dominick.  She went up north with Andy, Alice and the girls.  Then we went to the marina and out on the boat with the Logan's.  Nicole loved those people and they really enjoyed her.  She was Jim's favorite bar tender.  "Nick would you go down and get Uncle Jim another beer and a gozinta (to keep the beer cold).  She would hustle down the stairs and come back up with the beer in the holder.  We went downtown for a cruise on this day and didn't get home till 12:30.  They were great friends and we had great memories.

1859 - Charles Blondin became the first person to cross Niagara Falls on a tightrope. what are you doing today?  Not this I hope.

Get Faith
Acts chapter 10  "Then Peter said, "Can anyone withhold the water for baptizing these people who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?"  So he ordered them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ."  It is possible we do not call on the Holy Spirit enough in our efforts to bring all people to Christ.  Prior to this verse it says the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word.  Let us pray today that the Holy Spirit moves through all people to bring us to the truth through Jesus Christ so that we can spend our lives and eternity with God.  Peace

On this day
1989  I was gathering sheep from church, children that lived near me would come to my house.  On this day the Gallagher kids - Wayne, Farah, Sally  and another whose namehmm   I don't recall, came over to play and hang out.  I was hosing down the outside of the house and windows and I seem to remember the kids got wet somehow.  Joey, from across the street came over and spent the rest of the day and had dinner.  I think I always set a place for him thinking he would show up and most days he did.  The nice thing is that now, 30 years later I am still in touch with Wayne and his wife and children, and their grandmother on  Facebook.  I also keep up with Joe.  Social Media can be a wonderful thing.  Nicole was so used to having a lot of kids around, she still surrounds herself at camp with kids.  History does repeat itself.

1675 - Frederick William of Brandenburg crushed the Swedes. I'm thinking hockey??

Bhutan
Bhutan had a population of 797,765 people in 2016.[128] Bhutan has a median age of 24.8 years.[41] There are 1,070 males to every 1,000 females. The literacy rate in Bhutan is 59.5 percent.[129]

Ethnic groups[edit]

Bhutanese people primarily consist of the Ngalops and Sharchops, called the Western Bhutanese and Eastern Bhutanese respectively. Although the Sharchops are slightly larger in demographic size, the Ngalops dominate the political sphere, as the King and the political elite belong to this group.[130] The Ngalops primarily consist of Bhutanese living in the western part of the country. Their culture is closely related to that of Tibet. Much the same could be said of the Sharchops, the largest group, who traditionally follow the Nyingmapa rather than the official Drukpa Kagyu form of Tibetan Buddhism. In modern times, with improved transportation infrastructure, there has been much intermarriage between these groups.
The Lhotshampa, meaning "southerner Bhutanese", are a heterogeneous group of mostly Nepalese ancestry. It was claimed that they constituted 45% of the population in the 1988 census,[131] and include migrants from as early as the 1890s to as recent as the 1980s, who have fought a bitter war with Bhutan over rights to abode, language, and dress. In the early 1970s, intermarriage between the Lhotshampas Bhutanese and mainstream Bhutanese society was encouraged by the government, but after the late 1980s, the Bhutanese government forced about 108,000 Lhotshampas from their homes, seized their land, and expelled them to refugee camps.[85] Consequently, there has been mass emigration from Bhutan (both forced and voluntary) and ethnic cleansing in Bhutan resulting in hundreds of thousands of people left stateless in refugee camps of Nepal.[85] Currently, Lhotsampa are estimated to make up approximately 20% of Bhutan's population.[130]
I have a hard time understanding human nature.  In a country of under 1 million peoples (like the size of Detroit) they are separated into group that are at war with each.  It is hard to keep hope for peace in this world, isn't it?  Fortunately some of us find our peace elsewhere (see Get Faith)

Enjoy the day!  Make it memorable  Happy Birthday Chris S!

Acts chapter 10  "Then Peter bean to speak to them:  "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him.... Everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name."  This began as Cornelius recounted being advised by an angel to seek out Peter.  God was looking out for him, He wanted him to be saved by knowing that Jesus was his Son and that by believing in him he would be forgiven and saved.  I like the inclusiveness of this message  - that ALL who go to him in the name of Jesus Christ can be forgiven and saved to eternal life with the Father.  What a powerful message!

On this day
1988   It was a Monday and says that we went out to Dave and Roses' Mom's place.  We went out on the boat with the kids.  I remember lots of days out on the company Four Winns boats but I have no memory of this day at their Mom's place.  They had not been our neighbors for very long but we had some great family time with them.  Aaron was 10, Nicole was 3, their son David was maybe 6 and Josh was maybe 2.  Even with the big age spread they had the best times together - and Dave and Rose were much younger than Mark and I.  We were great neighbors and great friends that made great memories together.  Thirty years later they are all grown up and making their own friends and families memories.

1787 - Edward Gibbon completed "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire." It was published the following May. I'm sure this was a well read book - I have heard of it.  hmm  maybe.

Bhutan

Road[edit]

The Lateral Road is Bhutan's primary east–west corridor, connecting Phuentsholing in the southwest to Trashigang in the east. In between, the Lateral Road runs directly through Wangdue PhodrangTrongsa and other population centres. The Lateral Road also has spurs connecting to the capital Thimphu and other major population centres such as Paro and Punakha. As with other roads in Bhutan, the Lateral Road presents serious safety concerns due to pavement conditions, sheer drops, hairpin turns, weather and landslides.[120][121][122]
Since 2014, road widening has been a priority across Bhutan, in particular for the North-East-West highway from Trashigang to Dochula. The widening project is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 and will make road travel across the country substantially faster and more efficient. In addition, it is projected that the improved road conditions will encourage more tourism in the more inaccessible eastern region of Bhutan.[123][124][125] Currently, the road conditions appear to be deterring tourists from visiting Bhutan due to the increased instances of road blocks, landslides and dust disruption caused by the widening project.[126]
I think I have seen pictures of these roads - they look more like a thrill ride at Disney World

Acts chapter 10  "....and he (Peter) said to them, "You yourselves know that it is unlawful for a Jew to associate with or to visit a Gentile; but God has shown me that I should not call anyone profane or unclean."  This is a continuation of the story of Cornelius, Paul and Peter.  This refers to the law that all three of these men were under as Jews - but now through Paul's conversion, and a visitation to Cornelius to speak to Peter, and Peter being the rock of the faith beginning were all brought to faith in Jesus Christ.  No longer on the weight of the law but free to love and care for one another in God's grace.  Love God and Love one another.

On this day
1987  My mom left to go up to St Helen.  I thought, wow she was still driving up there alone and then I did the math and figured out she was 65 - I'm 72 now and still doing that.  Age is relative isn't it?  Nicole was only 2 now so I had to work around her naps to get anything done, but we manage - and I wasn't working.  Neither was my friend Pam, a teacher off for the summer, so she came over with her two boys.  We took the kids to McDonald's for dinner, went by and checked my Moms house and stopped by Schwartz/s  and when we got back to my house her battery was dead.   I'm sure her husband Pat came or sent someone over to fix it.  I look back at that event differently now then I did at the time, I'm sure.  I'm sure the kids were fine playing in the meantime.

1987 - The movie "Dragnet" opened in the U.S. now there's some exciting stuff, lol

Bhutan

Tourism[edit]

In 2014, Bhutan welcomed 133,480 foreign visitors.[105] Seeking to become a high value destination, it imposes a daily fee of US$250 on tourists that covers touring and hotel accommodation.[106] The industry employs 21,000 people and accounts for 1.8% of GDP.[107]
The country currently has no UNESCO World Heritage Sites, but it has eight declared tentative sites for UNESCO inclusion since 2012. These sites include Ancient Ruin of Drukgyel Dzong,[108] Bumdelling Wildlife Sanctuary,[109] Dzongs: the centre of temporal and religious authorities (Punakha DzongWangdue Phodrang DzongParo DzongTrongsa Dzong and Dagana Dzong),[110] Jigme Dorji National Park (JDNP),[111] Royal Manas National Park (RMNP),[112] Sacred Sites associated with Phajo Drugom Zhigpo and his descendants,[113] Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary (SWS),[114] and Tamzhing Monastery.[115] Bhutan also has numerous tourist sites that are not included in its UNESCO tentative list. Bhutan has one element, the Mask dance of the drums from Drametse, registered in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List.[116]
Bhutan is also well known for mountain adventure trekking and hiking. Jhomolhari Base Camp Trek, Snowman Trek, and Masagang trek are some of the popular treks in Bhutan.
Every country has something beautiful to offer.

Acts chapter 10  "So Peter went down to the men and said, "I am the one you are looking for; what is the reason for your coming?"  They answered "Cornelius....was directed by a holy angel to send for you to come to his house  and to hear what you have to say."   Both of these men had been contacted by God.  God wanted Peter to go to Cornelius and share the good news of the Gospel.  We know that Cornelius was a God loving, fearing man of God and God wanted him to know about Jesus so that he would be saved, as we are who believe in God's Grace in Jesus Christ.  Let God be active in your heart and mind to share the Gospel with others - if you can't tell them - show them in your life and actions.

On this day
1986  It was a big day for Mom she bought a new car - Ford Tempo and her and my brother Mark came over and we went for a ride.  We went to Big Boy for lunch, stopped by my cousin Sandy's and came back home.  Nicole was a year old and had a ride in the car that would be hers when she turned 16 and lasted till she was in college.  What a good little car.  Lots of memories.  What was your first car?

1986 - The U.S. Congress approved $100 million in aid to the Contras fighting in Nicaragua.

Bhutan

Industry[edit]

The industrial sector accounts of 22% of the economy. The key manufacturing sectors in Bhutan include production of ferroalloy, cement, metal poles, iron and nonalloy steel products, processed graphitecopper conductors, alcoholic and carbonated beverages, processed fruits, carpets, wood products and furniture.[102]

Mining[edit]

Bhutan has deposits of numerous minerals. Commercial production includes coaldolomitegypsum, and limestone. The country has proven reserves of berylcopper, graphite, leadmicapyritetintungsten, and zinc. However, the country remains as an environmental frontier as it prefers to conserve the environment, rather than to exploit and destroy it for money.[citation needed]

Acts  chapter 10  "The he heard a voice saying, "Get up, Peter; kill and eat."  But Peter said, "By no means, Lord; for I have never eaten anything that is profane or unclean."  The voice said to him again, a second time, "What God has made clean, you must not call profane."  You may not have ever read this or heard it in Sunday school.  It goes back to what was law in the old testament and we all know how hard it is to give up old habits.  For example, bacon - how hard would it be for you to give that up?  We do not live under the law anymore - I mean we know the importance of the Ten Commandments, but the Israelite's were burdened under the law and so through the grace of God we are not under all those laws that burden us.  We obey the laws we know God wants us to obey because we love and honor Him.  Jesus saved you to eat  bacon.

On this day
1985  Nicole was a month old and it says she was up all day.  She was not a fussy baby and I was so excited about being her mom that it didn't bother me if she didn't nap - I had not yet tired of her company.  Come to think of it, I still never have.  She  would sit in her little swing and smile while I straightened up the house.  She was breast feeding on demand and the doctor said she was doing fine so we were just happy to be home getting accustomed to each other.  This is one of the probably few days we didn't have company.  We did get a birthday gift from my friend Nan in California, we have been friends since we were 10 and despite the distance we still are in contact.

1985 - Natalia Solzhenitsyn the wife of exiled, Soviet author Alexander Solzhenitsyn, became a U.S. citizen. I feel like there is a bigger story to this.

Agriculture[edit]

Rice planting near Paro
The share of the agricultural sector in GDP declined from approximately 55% in 1985 to 33% in 2003. In 2013 the government announced the aspiration that Bhutan will become the first country in the world with 100 percent organic farming.[99][100] Bhutanese red rice is the country's most widely known agricultural export, enjoying a market in North America and Europe. Bangladesh is the largest market of Bhutanese apples and oranges.[101]
Fishing in Bhutan is mainly centered on trout and carp.

I guess a red rice dish is in order!

Acts chapter 10  In Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius....He was a devout man who feared God with all his household....One afternoon at about three o'clock he had a vision in which he clearly saw an angel of God....He stared at him in terror and said, "What is it Lord?"  He answered, "Your prayers and your alms have ascended as a memorial before God.   Now send men to Joppa for a certain Simon who is called Peter."    These are all great stories of those days after Christ had risen from the dead and appeared to his people.  Now the task was to get the news out to all people of there salvation through Jesus Christ.  We still need people to share that news.
PS  Did you notice people are terrified when they see angels?  What do they look like?

On this day
1984   It was a Saturday and I was home replanting potted plants and cleaning.  This time of the year are either - graduation or weddings and an occasional birthday thrown in.  This was my cousin Earl's daughter's graduation party.  Mark was always at work at the boat store so Andy and Alice came over and picked me up.  The McGregor family were well known for their drunken parties, we just don't know when to quit, and it isn't always the guys.  But it was on this day - Andy celebrated well with his favorite cousin Earl and Alice or I had to drive home.  I come from a Scottish/German ancestry - both of which are well known for consuming large quantities of alcohol.  We do have a good time.  Christine is married now and I have attended both of her children's graduation parties.  Time marches on.

1758 - British and Hanoverian armies defeated the French at Krefeld in Germany.  wow lots of countries heard from here.

Economy[edit]

A proportional representation of Bhutan's exports.
The Bhutan Power Corporation headquarters in Thimphu. Bhutan's principal export is hydroelectricity.
Bhutan's currency is the ngultrum, whose value is fixed to the Indian rupee. The rupee is also accepted as legal tender in the country. Though Bhutan's economy is one of the world's smallest,[90] it has grown rapidly in recent years, by eight percent in 2005 and 14 percent in 2006. In 2007, Bhutan had the second-fastest-growing economy in the world, with an annual economic growth rate of 22.4 percent. This was mainly due to the commissioning of the gigantic Tala Hydroelectric Power Station. As of 2012, Bhutan's per capita income was US$2,420.[91]
Bhutan's economy is based on agriculture, forestry, tourism and the sale of hydroelectric power to India. Agriculture provides the main livelihood for 55.4 percent of the population.[92] Agrarian practices consist largely of subsistence farming and animal husbandry. Handicrafts, particularly weaving and the manufacture of religious art for home altars, are a small cottage industry. A landscape that varies from hilly to ruggedly mountainous has made the building of roads and other infrastructure difficult and expensive.

And yet they seem amazingly peaceful and happy!

Acts chapter 9   "When (Saul) had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples; and they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple."  I understand their reluctance to accept him, don't you?  I mean he was persecuting those of the new church like the week before and now he's switched sides.  Barnabas came to his defense and eventually, as we know, Paul became one of our strongest evangelists.  Our God is amazing in what he can change from a negative to a positive.  Give thanks to the Lord our God.

On this day
1983  Jack Tate was in from Florida with Love It and staying here at my house.  I was on vacation this week so rode along to the pits with Jack to take the boat down to Roostertail, again for the third year.  The boat broke again, for the second year so we just drank and partied anyway.  It was a pretty hot day and very drunk, but we managed to get all the way out to the Wishing Well to continue the carnage.  How Jack pulled that boat back, I have no idea.  Gilly and Lorna were with us in the truck.  Good times.

1807 - British seamen board the USS Chesapeake, a provocation leading to the War of 1812.   Also boat racing.

Bhutan

Ethnic conflict[edit]

Ethnic LhotshampasBhutanese refugees left Bhutan, arrived in Nepal in the early 1990s.
In the 1990s, Bhutan expelled or forced to leave most of its ethnic Lhotshampa population, one-fifth of the country's entire population, demanding conformity in religion, dress, and language.[82][83][84] Lhotshampas were arrested and expelled from the country and their property was expropriated.[85]
A harassment campaign escalating in the early 1990s ensued, and afterwards Bhutanese security forces began expelling people. According to the UNHCR, more than 107,000 Bhutanese refugees living in seven camps in eastern Nepal have been documented as of 2008.[84] After many years in refugee camps, many inhabitants are now moving to different host nations such as Canada, Norway, the UK, Australia, and the US as refugees. The US has admitted 60,773 refugees from fiscal years 2008 through 2012.[86]
The Nepalese government does not permit citizenship for Bhutanese refugees, so most of them have become stateless.[87] Careful scrutiny has been used to prevent their relatives from getting ID cards and voting rights.[87] Bhutan considers political parties associated with these refugees to be illegal and terrorist in nature.[87] Human rights groups initially claimed the government interfered with individual rights by requiring all citizens, including ethnic minority members, to wear the traditional dress of the ethnic majority in public places. The government strictly enforced this law in Buddhist religious buildings, government offices, schools, official functions, and public ceremonies.[87]
Well this gives me a different outlook on this nation.  What is it about the people of this earth?  Only God knows.

On this day
1982   Ah!  the Offshore Racing days.  The last time Love It raced on the Detroit River out of the Rooster-tail he smoked them.  The boat was faster than boats in the open class.  So on this day we were all pumped and ready for the race the next day.  Chuck had a room at the RenCen and Andy, Ty and Norma all came up for a pre-race party.  We were living high in those days - so much fun.   I had just met Chuck last year at this same race.  He and his boat were from Florida and all the crew that came with it.

1859 - Andrew Lanergan received the first rocket patent. Really?!

Bhutan

Human rights[edit]

Homosexuality is illegal in Bhutan. The Penal Code (Articles 213 & 214) states that same-sex sexual acts (regardless of whether they were consensual or done in private) are punishable by a prison sentence of between one month to less than one year.[80] Some members of the Parliament of Bhutan have publicly called for the anti-gay laws to be repealed, as majority of Bhutanese are against the discriminatory laws.[81]
Very often it is hard for a country to shed the stigma of old beliefs and laws but when the people reject those beliefs it is time to reconsider the law.

Acts chapter 9   "The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul."  This was the Lord speaking to Ananias.  If you remember that Saul was struck by lightening and made blind while working as a persecuter of the new Christians, I'm sure Ananais, who was a new follower of Christ himself, was more than a little terrified.  But, when Jesus speaks his followers listen.   Saul was already waiting for Ananais, as he had been  told, by Jesus that he would come lay hands on him and heal his eyes.  What are you doing today?  What has Christ called all of us to lately?

1979  I worked at Quality, the boss was off playing golf on Wednesdays and Chris golfed on Thursdays - I had regular days off due to my extreme social life, lol.  Ljubo Biro, an artist from Yugoslavia was working in the shop - he needed a job to stay in the country and we were a draw to talented artisans.  We had a whole family from Argentina/Spain working there for years.  But as with all of them, Ljubo and I became social and he invited me to his studio downtown by the DAC and out to dinner.  He was probably 60 at the time - very European, suave and a great conversationalist.  We went out and had dinner many times.  He made me promise that if I ever got pregnant I would pose for him in the nude.  By the time that happened he had moved to Sarasota and had a gallery down there.  I do have a bas relief in my living room that he did, Jim and Chris gave it to me as a wedding present and I cherish it.

Foreign relations[edit]

The permanent mission of Bhutan to the United Nations in New York City
In the early 20th century, Bhutan's principal foreign relations were with British India and Tibet. The government of British India managed relations with the kingdom from the Bhutan House in Kalimpong. Fearful of Chinese communist expansion, Bhutan signed a friendship treaty with the newly independent Republic of India in 1949. Its concerns were exacerbated after the Chinese takeover of Tibet in 1959.[67] Relations with Nepal remained strained due to Bhutanese refugees. Bhutan joined the United Nations in 1971. It was the first country to recognize Bangladesh's independence in 1971. It became a founding member of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in 1985. The country is a member of 150 international organizations,[67] including the Bay of Bengal InitiativeBBINWorld Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the Group of 77.
Bhutan maintains strong economic, strategic, and military relations with neighbouring India.[68][69] In 2007, Bhutan and India revised their friendship treaty which clarified Bhutan's full control of its foreign relations, including its border with Tibet. Bhutan has very warm relations with Japan, which provides significant development assistance. The Bhutanese royals were hosted by the Japanese imperial family during a state visit in 2011. Japan is also helping Bhutan cope with glacial floods through developing an early warning system.  I think for a small country they have big smarts and hearts.

Acts chapter 9   "He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"  Not many (or any) of us hear the voice of Jesus asking us this question, but possibly many of us are somewhat guilty of this same crime that Saul/Paul was.  We use his name in bad ways, or we forget that - love thy neighbor stuff when we don't agree with a persons politics, or driving ability and a lot more.  Listen today for that still, small voice that reminds you to be kind, accepting, loving and compassionate.  Don't work against Jesus - work with Him.  Love will always win out.

1978   Some days are worse than others.  On this day, a Monday, my boss was off sick which always puts stress on the rest of the office staff, (or not).  He wasn't really all that involved with the "work" of the office but he could answer the phone if you were busy.  I was in a bad mood because my dear boyfriend Pete had gotten home at 3AM  and I woke up to fight with him.  Later when I got home from work I had a nice restoring phone call with my still, dear friend Pam, and worked on my plants.   Ah, revival and those things that calm the nerves.  I still find my garden and house plants calming.

1978 - Garfield was in newspapers around the U.S. for the first time. Good ole Garfield!!

Women in government[edit]

Women in Bhutan tend to be less active in politics than men due to customs and different aspects of Bhutan's culture that dictate a woman's role in the household.[64] These customs roll over to a woman's public life and can cause them to be timid and not confident in making their voice heard.[64] This then leads to a limitation of their voice in the government and impacts that they can make. Bhutan, however, has made steps toward equality between the genders by having more girls enrolled in school as well as creating the National Commission for Women and Children (NCWC) in 2004.[65] This program was created with the intention of promoting and protecting both women and children's rights. Bhutan has also recently elected their first female Dzongda, equivalent to a District Attorney, in 2012 and their first female minister in 2013.[65] Minister Dorji Choden is the chair for the National Bhutan Commission for Women and children and believes that this programme can be used to “promote women into more leadership roles” which can then lead to women taking on a more active role in their society.[64] Overall there has also been a gradual increase in women in power with a 68% increase in women representation from 2011 to 2016 election.[65]
Interesting!  Only recently began.
