Philemon   "I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you, my brother."   Paul was writing to Philemon, who was a Christian that owned slaves.  His slave Onesimus had stolen from his owner and run away, but had now found Christ Jesus and had been saved.  Paul asked Philemon to forgive him as Paul had become close and even calls Onesimus his son.  We are called to forgive one another, regardless of the sin or wrong that had been committed.  It isn't always easy but we are called because so much has been forgiven of us.  Read this letter to Philemon, it is only 1 page long.

2014  I was working at Fulex one day a week, just entering data.  It was nice, I shared Nicole'e office and had lunch with her.  After work on this day I met Pam and Norma at the Olive Garden  for dinner, which I did once a month.  We have fallen off doing this and I miss it - I miss working at Fulex too.  Times change and we adjust to new things going on.  But I really miss my dinners with Pam and Norma.

2014 - Amazon filed for a patent for a UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) configured to autonomously deliver items to customers. The patent was related to Amazon's plan for their Prime Air service.  wow delivery by drone - five years ago they filed!

Philippians chapter 3  "....the righteousness from God based on faith."    I have nothing without God.  My life is meaningless and I have no future if I don't have God.  But I am blessed with the knowledge of God and his Word.  I have hope in Jesus Christ that this life, which is based on love will continue on to the next life that I am promised through my Savior.  My faith and firm knowledge of  the promises I have with God gives me hope and life.  I wish this for all people.

On this day
2012  Knowing what I know now, this day at work was the calm before the storm.  Business was a little slow, the bosses grand daughter Sheena came in to cover the truck scale and I was getting caught up on the office paper work.  I met Nicole after work at a finance company so she could consolidate some loans and then she went on to Pastor Beebe's church to do music for the catechism class.  She left there to visit a friend at school in Indiana.  She never was one to stay put for long.  I talked to Alice later on and found out she adopted another black cat and called his Charlie II.

1779 - John Adams was elected to negotiate with the British over the American Revolutionary War peace terms.  If there had been TV's then, it would have been all over the news.

Economy

Aerial view of infrastructure at the Prudhoe Bay Oil Field
The 2007 gross state product was $44.9 billion, 45th in the nation. Its per capita personal income for 2007 was $40,042, ranking 15th in the nation. According to a 2013 study by Phoenix Marketing International, Alaska had the fifth-largest number of millionaires per capita in the United States, with a ratio of 6.75 percent.[76] The oil and gas industry dominates the Alaskan economy, with more than 80% of the state's revenues derived from petroleum extraction. Alaska's main export product (excluding oil and natural gas) is seafood, primarily salmon, cod, Pollock and crab.
Agriculture represents a very small fraction of the Alaskan economy. Agricultural production is primarily for consumption within the state and includes nursery stock, dairy products, vegetables, and livestock. Manufacturing is limited, with most foodstuffs and general goods imported from elsewhere.
Employment is primarily in government and industries such as natural resource extraction, shipping, and transportation. Military bases are a significant component of the economy in the Fairbanks North Star, Anchorage and Kodiak Island boroughs, as well as Kodiak. Federal subsidies are also an important part of the economy, allowing the state to keep taxes low. Its industrial outputs are crude petroleum, natural gas, coal, gold, precious metals, zinc and other mining, seafood processing, timber and wood products. There is also a growing service and tourism sector. Tourists have contributed to the economy by supporting local lodging.

Philippians chapter 2 "....For it is God who is at work in you, enabling you both to will and to work for his good pleasure."  The more time we spend in prayer or study, the closer we become to God and the more you begin to sense His presence in your life.  When you are in a relationship with Him you know it and are eager to spend more time talking and listening to Him.  I'm amazed at how often I open the Bible to exactly what I need at the moment, and I smile and know that He is with me.  I would wish this for all of you to experience if you aren't already.

On this day
2011  I had been in the hospital for 3 days and would be in for another 7 or so.  After 3 weeks after my surgery I had a blockage and couldn't eat or drink anything for 7 days.  I sure got thin, it didn't last though.  They put me in a huge room all by myself and it was a good thing because I was seldom alone.  I had visitors all day.  Never pass up an opportunity to visit someone who needs attention, it is probably the best healer of all.

1789 - Thomas Jefferson was appointed America's first Secretary of State. John Jay was appointed the first chief justice of the U.S. Samuel Osgood was appointed the first Postmaster-General. Edmund Jennings Randolph was appointed the first Attorney General.  I wonder what these men would say about all these dishonorable politicians we have now?  Maybe they were the same.  I always believed that they had higher standards and more honorable intentions, but maybe not.

Religion

Gold Rush-era Baptist church in Eagle
Russian Old Believers Church in Nikolaevsk
According to statistics collected by the Association of Religion Data Archives from 2010, about 34% of Alaska residents were members of religious congregations. 100,960 people identified as Evangelical Protestants, 50,866 as Roman Catholic, and 32,550 as mainline Protestants.[59] Roughly 4% are Mormon, 0.5% are Jewish, 1% are Muslim, 0.5% are Buddhist, 0.2% are Bahá'í, and 0.5% are Hindu.[60] The largest religious denominations in Alaska as of 2010 were the Catholic Church with 50,866 adherents, non-denominational Evangelical Protestants with 38,070 adherents, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with 32,170 adherents, and the Southern Baptist Convention with 19,891 adherents.[61] Alaska has been identified, along with Pacific Northwest states Washington and Oregon, as being the least religious states of the USA, in terms of church membership,[62][63]
In 1795, the First Russian Orthodox Church was established in Kodiak. Intermarriage with Alaskan Natives helped the Russian immigrants integrate into society. As a result, an increasing number of Russian Orthodox churches gradually became established within Alaska.[64] Alaska also has the largest Quaker population (by percentage) of any state.[65] In 2009 there were 6,000 Jews in Alaska (for whom observance of halakha may pose special problems).[66] Alaskan Hindus often share venues and celebrations with members of other Asian religious communities, including Sikhs and Jains.[67][68][69]
Estimates for the number of Muslims in Alaska range from 2,000 to 5,000.[70][71][72] The Islamic Community Center of Anchorage began efforts in the late 1990s to construct a mosque in Anchorage. They broke ground on a building in south Anchorage in 2010 and were nearing completion in late 2014. When completed, the mosque will be the first in the state and one of the northernmost mosques in the world.[73] There's also a Bahá'í Center.[74]

Of course this is always interesting to me.

Philippians chapter 2 "If then there is any encouragement in Christ, any consolation from love, any sharing in the Spirit, any compassion and sympathy, make my joy complete: be of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.  Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility regard others as better than yourselves.  Let each of you look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others."  I can't add anything to this, it is perfect.

On this day
2010  This is I believe the first time the travelers group went to the Rathkeller/Dakota Inn for October Fest.  It was Don, Nicole and I, Marty and Sue, Deb and Jeff, Amy and Glen and Joe and Kristen.  We had  too much fun.  I was even asked to sit down by the hostess, lol.  I was trying to get people to dance the polka I believe.  Slightly rowdy but very memorable.  It is Oktoberfest time folks - find a good one to enjoy.  First English's is on October 12.

1869 - Thousands of businessmen were financially ruined after a panic on Wall Street. The panic was caused by an attempt to corner the gold market by Jay Gould and James Fisk.

Alaska

Good Friday earthquake

On March 27, 1964, the massive Good Friday earthquake killed 133 people and destroyed several villages and portions of large coastal communities, mainly by the resultant tsunamis and landslides. It was the second-most-powerful earthquake in the recorded history of the world, with a moment magnitude of 9.2. It was over one thousand times more powerful than the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. The time of day (5:36 pm), time of year and location of the epicenter were all cited as factors in potentially sparing thousands of lives, particularly in Anchorage.  These things aren't new.

Philippians chapter 1  "I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now."  When I think of all the people that have grown my faith just be being who they are I am over whelmed with joy.  Every church I have belonged to has shown me Christians at their very best, kind loving and sharing God's word by being in the Word.  Now as I start another church, I have already seen those same new people shining on the love of Christ and renewing my faith.  God is good!

On this day
2009  I mentioned that I contacted my "cyber group", the travelers group is my current word for these friends.  It has been over 10 years that we started enjoying a night a month bringing food from different countries.  I still study the locations but everyone is basically there for the socializing.  It is a great group of people and because of the busy summer I have slacked off on keeping in going but I will try to fire it up again.  Great people!!   As you can see I am in Alaska this month.

1789 - The U.S. Congress authorized the office of Postmaster General.

Alaska

Pre-colonization

A modern Alutiiq dancer in traditional festival garb
Numerous indigenous peoples occupied Alaska for thousands of years before the arrival of European peoples to the area. Linguistic and DNA studies done here have provided evidence for the settlement of North America by way of the Bering land bridge.[31] At the Upward Sun River site in the Tanana River Valley in Alaska, remains of a six-week-old infant were found. The baby's DNA showed that she belonged to a population that was genetically separate from other native groups present elsewhere in the New World at the end of the Pleistocene. Ben Potter, the University of Alaska Fairbanks archaeologist who unearthed the remains at the Upward River Sun site in 2013, named this new group Ancient Beringians.[32] The Tlingit people developed a society with a matrilineal kinship system of property inheritance and descent in what is today Southeast Alaska, along with parts of British Columbia and the Yukon. Also in Southeast were the Haida, now well known for their unique arts. The Tsimshian people came to Alaska from British Columbia in 1887, when President Grover Cleveland, and later the U.S. Congress, granted them permission to settle on Annette Island and found the town of Metlakatla. All three of these peoples, as well as other indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, experienced smallpox outbreaks from the late 18th through the mid-19th century, with the most devastating epidemics occurring in the 1830s and 1860s, resulting in high fatalities and social disruption.[33]
The Aleutian Islands are still home to the Aleut people's seafaring society, although they were the first Native Alaskans to be exploited by Russians. Western and Southwestern Alaska are home to the Yup'ik, while their cousins the Alutiiq ~ Sugpiaq lived in what is now Southcentral Alaska. The Gwich'in people of the northern Interior region are Athabaskan and primarily known today for their dependence on the caribou within the much-contested Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. The North Slope and Little Diomede Island are occupied by the widespread Inupiat people.
I can't help but wonder if they would have survived better where they were?  Smallpox?

Colossians chapter 3  "Whatever our task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters, since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ."   We have many masters here on earth.  Our jobs, our families, our friends -people that we work for or make time for, our families that we would do anything for.  If you consider that God knows you need masters here, and  that you need to lovingly oblige all of them but remember that your real master is the Lord.  We serve with willingness and joy because he loves us.

On this day
2008 Was a Sunday and Nicole and I went to church.  She went to  Christ Iroquois down in Indian Village to speak for Living Waters Ministry.  I worked in the garage in the afternoon which almost always included a visit with my neighbors Ty and Shannon and their dog Dewey.  After dinner with Mom, I had to go to church for a Board of Youth meeting followed by Council.  I was the director for the Board of Youth for the 75th year I believe.

1784 - "The Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser" was published for the first time in Philadelphia. It was the first daily paper in AmericaAnd now they are so expensive I can't afford them anymore.

Alaska
According to an October 1998 report by the United States Bureau of Land Management, approximately 65% of Alaska is owned and managed by the U.S. federal government as public lands, including a multitude of national forests, national parks, and national wildlife refuges.[21] Of these, the Bureau of Land Management manages 87 million acres (35 million hectares), or 23.8% of the state. The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service. It is the world's largest wildlife refuge, comprising 16 million acres (6.5 million hectares).
I wonder if they talk about global warming at their meetings?

Colossians chapter 3  "As God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience."  This is not what all those wordy postings on Facebook tell us.  "Be strong, stand up for yourself, you are smart, and can do all and be all."  This world tells us to put ourselves first - totally against what Jesus advises us to do.  I always feel like when people post those things they are trying to convince themselves.  We don't have to be convinced that God loves us, thinks we are perfect and wants the best for us.  God's posts simply say you are loved, now spread that around!

On this day
2007  After work and dinner on a Thursday night it can get boring.  Mom and Nicole and I played Skipbo on this day.  Anyone remember or still play that card game?  Family game nights were big for a while but I haven't heard them mentioned lately.  Nicole and I recently found her Battleship game and immediately sat down and played a game.  What is your families favorite game?

1519 - Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan left Spain to find a route to the Spice Islands of Indonesia. Magellan was killed during the trip, but one of his ships eventually made the journey.  He joined forces to fight on an island and was shot with a poison arrow.

Alaska
Aleutian Islands, outlined in red.png  Apparently thousands of years ago that strip of islands were connected so that you could travel on land between Russia and Alaska.  Think about that.

The Aleutian Islands (/əˈlʃən/;[2][3] RussianАлеутские островаAleutTanam Unangaa, literally "Land of the Aleuts", possibly from Chukchi aliat, "island"), also called the Aleut Islands[4] or Aleutic Islands[5] and known before 1867 as the Catherine Archipelago, are a chain of 14 large volcanic islands and 55 smaller ones belonging to both the U.S. state of Alaska and the Russian federal subject of Kamchatka Krai.[1] They form part of the Aleutian Arc in the Northern Pacific Ocean, occupying an area of 6,821 sq mi (17,666 km2) and extending about 1,200 mi (1,900 km) westward from the Alaska Peninsula toward the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, and mark a dividing line between the Bering Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. Crossing longitude 180°, at which point east and west longitude end, the archipelago contains both the westernmost part of the United States by longitude (Amatignak Island) and the easternmost by longitude (Semisopochnoi Island). The westernmost U.S. island in real terms, however, is Attu Island, west of which runs the International Date Line. While nearly all the archipelago is part of Alaska and is usually considered as being in the "Alaskan Bush", at the extreme western end, the small, geologically related Commander Islands belong to Russia.
The islands, with their 57 volcanoes, form the northernmost part of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Physiographically, they are a distinct section of the larger Pacific Border province, which in turn is part of the larger Pacific Mountain System physiographic division.
These Islands are most known for the battles and skirmishes that occurred there during the Aleutian Islands Campaign of World War II. The Japanese landings and occupations of Kiska and Attu in June 1942 were the only two invasions of the United States during that war.  Interesting.

Colossians chapter 3   "So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God."   Our Father, God knows how to be a good parent, he keeps his son close.  For those of us raised in the church we understand (somewhat) our Father God and our brother Jesus Christ.  We know that God sent his child to earth to be sacrificed for our sins.  Now, how much do you think that God loves you to do that?  The answer is a lot - He loves you a lot!

On this day
2004   My brother built me the most beautiful shelf and storage unit you can imagine.  I had told him I would like something to keep my books on and my music and photos in and display my tea pot collection and other decor.  It is perfect, but now I am considering a move and wonder what I will do with this massive piece of furniture that he lovingly built for me.  Ironically, the things I wanted it for, like books and photos are becoming things of the past, like music on albums and Cd's and video's.  On this day he brought the final  end pieces for the wall unit and Merri and Lindsey came over for dinner to see him.

1356 - The Battle of Poitiers was fought between England and France. Edward "the Black Prince" captured France's King John.  Sounds like a chess game to me.

 Alaska
Alaska is the northernmost and westernmost state in the United States and has the most easterly longitude in the United States because the Aleutian Islands extend into the Eastern Hemisphere.[9] Alaska is the only non-contiguous U.S. state on continental North America; about 500 miles (800 km) of British Columbia (Canada) separates Alaska from Washington. It is technically part of the continental U.S., but is sometimes not included in colloquial use; Alaska is not part of the contiguous U.S., often called "the Lower 48". The capital city, Juneau, is situated on the mainland of the North American continent but is not connected by road to the rest of the North American highway system.

Colossians chapter 2  "And when you were dead in trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive together with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, erasing the record that stood against us with its legal demands."  You may have heard the words that even when you were dead in sin God sent his Son to save us.  As children of God in the Gospel we are no longer under the laws of the old testament - although we live our lives in the right walk - our sins are forgiven, not by our actions but by the grace of God.  So we live our lives as God would have us live, in love with one another, showing kindness and forgiving as he has forgiven us.

On this day
2003   I no longer had to drop Nicole and friends at school, she had her own car then and has ever since.  So I was free to make a drop off at Salvation Army on my way to work.  You know, the stuff you load into your trunk and drive around for months with?  The boss was not in a great mood these days, business was slow and although he was good at finding jobs, he always kept me employed, I can thank him for that.  There were days though when he was not a nice guy.  We still had Sam Snead the cat and I had to take him to the vet for shots this day.  In thinking back, he was the sweetest, nicest cat I might have had - I miss him in comparison to the current maniac that lives here.

2003 - Robert Duvall received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Now there's some big news.

Nome Alaska

In popular culture[edit]

The reality television series Bering Sea Gold is set and filmed in Nome.
At least two major films have been set in Nome, but not filmed there: the 1995 animated/live-action family film Balto starring Kevin Bacon, and the 2009 science-fiction/horror film The Fourth Kind starring Milla Jovovich.
In "Ice", a 1993 episode of the television series X-FilesMulder and Scully are sent to a remote Alaskan research facility at Icy Cape in which a five-member team are found dead, possibly due to an alien lifeform that infects a human host and makes its host want to kill other people. Towards the end of the episode, the personnel from Doolittle Airfield (a fictional military installation named after real-life General James (Jimmy) H. Doolittle,[39] a former resident and WWI fighter pilot and Medal of Honor recipient) in Nome, Alaska, rescue the remaining survivors and the last infected victim (character Nancy Da Silva played by Felicity Huffman) is airlifted out of the base.
The 2002 Disney comedy/adventure film Snow Dogs, starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and James Coburn, is set against the running of the Iditarod race.
An episode of the Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour depicts the Ricardo and Mertz families buying land in Nome.
In episode 1 of the 1997 BBC television travel series Full Circle, British actor, comedian, writer and presenter Michael Palin (of Monty Python fame), traveled to Nome and met a goldpanner on the "Golden Sands of Nome".
In The Simpsons Movie, the Simpsons seek refuge in Alaska. In their new log cabin home, Marge Simpson is seen knitting a tapestry that says "Nome Sweet Nome", which implies the family may have taken up residence in Nome.
In the 2018 alternate history short story Liberating Alaska by Harry Turtledove, Nome (under the name Siknazuak, which is a variant of its Iñupiat name) in the story is taken over by the Soviet Union in June 1929 and is eventually liberated by the United States Marine Corps. In the story, Alaska isn't sold to the US in 1867 and remains part of Russia until the end of the Russian Civil War when Vladimir Lenin is forced to cede Alaska to the US following the Allied intervention in the war.
True-life 1970s adventures while serving as the sole physician in Nome are recounted in "On Call in the Arctic" by Thomas J. Sims, M.D. (Pegasus 2018).   Funny!

Colossians chapter 1  "For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross."  Our Triune God explained in the Father and the Son being one for our benefit.  We have been joined with our God and Savior by the blood that Jesus shed on the cross for you and I - saved forever with God in our heavenly home.  We are blessed.

On this day
1999  It was a Friday and I started out with a bad stiff neck, even after a hot shower it didn't ease up so I called the Chiropractor and stopped in on my way to work.  Good thing he is a friend.  After work I picked Nicole up from Basketball practice and then took her to church.  The High School youth had a lock in to Red Oaks, which I have no memory of, probably because Bruce was the youth leader and Jacki and I were only along for transportation purposes.  We took them (24) back to church for a sleepover after picking up food from MacDonalds.  I came home, didn't have to stay at church with kids.  Thanks Bruce.

1778 - The United States signed its first treaty with a Native American tribe, the Delaware Nation.  I wonder how that lasted.

Nome Alaska

Serum run[edit]

The annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which finishes in Nome, commemorates the 1925 serum run.
In 1925, Nome was the destination of the famous Great Race of Mercy, in which dog sleds played a large part in transporting diphtheria serum through harsh conditions. In 1973, Nome became the ending point of the 1,049+ mi (1,600+ km) Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The latter part of its route was used in the serum run.
The sled driver of the final leg of the relay was the Norwegian-born Gunnar Kaasen; his lead sled dog was Balto. A statue of Balto by F.G. Roth stands near the zoo in Central Park, New York City. Leonhard Seppala ran the penultimate, and longest, leg of the 1925 serum run to Nome. One of his dogs, Togo, is considered the forgotten hero of the Great Race of Mercy;[30] another of his dogs, Fritz, is preserved and on display at the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum in Nome.
That's interesting!

Psalm 66:1-2  Make a joyful noise to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name.    That is what we did on this past Saturday as we celebrated Nicole and Kristin's wedding.   The church was packed, 300 plus and the message was love.  Love to God and to one another.  People that hadn't felt welcome to the table, on this day communed.  Love abounded and reached heaven in its joy, I believe.  This is the inheritance we have in our God.  If you haven't experienced this joy, please come and join us in worship so that you too can feel welcomed to the table and loved.

1997  It is that time of year that I finally have to admit that I do in fact have allergies.  On this day I left work early to go to the doctor, he gave me a script, apparently didn't know I had allergies?  Check with Mom to make sure she and Nicole were covered and then Alice and I picked up my cousin Kathy and went to Mt Clemens to have dinner at Luigi's with other cousins and friends - Pam, Norma, Barb Carol and Kay.  We love our once a month dinners.

1630 - The village of Shawmut changed its name to Boston.  That's good.

Now, 1900 and 1907  after the gold rush hit.
In the summer of 1898, the "Three Lucky Swedes": Norwegian-American Jafet Lindeberg, and two naturalized American citizens of Swedish birth, Erik Lindblom and John Brynteson, discovered gold on Anvil Creek. News of the discovery reached the outside world that winter. By 1899, Nome had a population of 10,000 and the area was organized as the Nome mining district. In that year, gold was found in the beach sands for dozens of miles along the coast at Nome, which spurred the stampede to new heights. Thousands more people poured into Nome during the spring of 1900 aboard steamships from the ports of Seattle and San Francisco. By 1900, a tent city on the beaches and on the treeless coast reached 48 km (30 mi), from Cape Rodney to Cape Nome. In June of that year, Nome averaged 1000 newcomers a day.[18]
