On this day
2010 This is I believe the first time the travelers group went to the Rathkeller/Dakota Inn for October Fest. It was Don, Nicole and I, Marty and Sue, Deb and Jeff, Amy and Glen and Joe and Kristen. We had too much fun. I was even asked to sit down by the hostess, lol. I was trying to get people to dance the polka I believe. Slightly rowdy but very memorable. It is Oktoberfest time folks - find a good one to enjoy. First English's is on October 12.
1869 - Thousands of businessmen were financially ruined after a panic on Wall Street. The panic was caused by an attempt to corner the gold market by Jay Gould and James Fisk.

Good Friday earthquake
On March 27, 1964, the massive Good Friday earthquake killed 133 people and destroyed several villages and portions of large coastal communities, mainly by the resultant tsunamis and landslides. It was the second-most-powerful earthquake in the recorded history of the world, with a moment magnitude of 9.2. It was over one thousand times more powerful than the 1989 San Francisco earthquake. The time of day (5:36 pm), time of year and location of the epicenter were all cited as factors in potentially sparing thousands of lives, particularly in Anchorage. These things aren't new.
