March 31, 2014 Monday

Work today.  I used to get up at 5:30 and get my exercise in, not anymore.  I will have to get something else in later.

Romans Chapter 5 - verse 18 Through one Man's righteous act the free gift came to all men.  I can't help but think of Martin Luther when I read this.  He must have loved this passage.

On this day -
1776 - Abigail Adams wrote to her husband John that women were "determined to foment a rebellion" if the new Declaration of Independence failed to guarantee their rights. Hah!  Smart woman!
1979 - The journal said that I worked on the computer from 10 to 4:15.  I don't remember having a computer at work.  It was a Burroughs Billing/Bookkeeping machine that had to be programed with a tape for whatever you wanted it to do.  It was the size of an office desk.  I guess we called it a computer.

Parenting - The first computer we had at home was a dinosaur of a thing, my cousin Kay gave it to us.  It was a great beginning to what turned out to be an evitable future.  It was a Mackintosh.  Thanks Kay!

Book club - Blood and Beauty.  by Dunant

March 30, 2014 Sunday

My fitbit tells me that I walk over a mile a day.  Even if I don't leave the house.  ??

The sermon today was the parable of the bridesmaids that were supposed to have their lamps filled with oil for the wedding ceremony.  These stories all have double meanings, they are intended to make you look deeper into the meaning.  One little boy that went up for children's time, after hearing an abbreviated version of this story had his own story to tell about his sister slamming his finger in the bathroom door this morning.  What do you make of that?

On this day -
1870 - The 15th amendment, guaranteeing the right to vote regardless of race, was passed by the U.S. Congress.
1975 - It was Easter, well it was our Easter as opposed to the Eastern or Russian Orthodox Easter.  My friend Pete was Russian Orthodox, so we had my family on this day and later, a week or two,  had his family Easter.

Parenting - I have a few friends that are caring for elderly parents.  A lot of them have put their moms or dads or both in senior care facilities.  That is usually dictated by finances, or family chemistry. Many elderly would rather go to a senior residence then live with family.  It is something that should be decided before it is necessary, if possible.  Mom is here with me for a few reasons, some financial and some history, I guess.

Book club - Blood and Beauty - keep reading it is a long book, but not boring.

New Orleans - Getting ready to pack up, take a walk today - soak up the sounds and smells.

    March 29, 2014 Saturday!

Jill worked me over this morning.  I am getting through more repetitions now.  Thrusts, lunges, abs and weights.  Oh my.

1 Peter chapter 2 - "But you are a chosen people,"  God has picked us to be his, the invitation is open to  all people of the earth.  That is a lot of invitations, lets help him.

    On this day -
1906 - In the U.S., 500,000 coal miners walked off the job seeking higher wages. We all know they were paid horrible wages for the danger and hard work they did.
2013 - nothing too much on this day over the years.  It might have been Good Friday or Easter day. Sometime the temperature was in the 70's and others cold, like today.  It is a kind of transitional time of year, with weather and Easter.  Maybe this year the nice weather and Easter will collide.

Parenting - I hate grey days and sad days.  We suffer when our kids suffer, over scraped knees, lost games, disappointments and broken hearts.  I will take anything over a broken heart.  It is the worse.

Book Club - Blood and Beauty.  People are so surprised that I did not know that the Papacy has been so corrupt in past years.  I prefer my world.  I like the current Pope.

New Orleans - getting ready to pull out.  Did we miss anything?  a lot I think:
Whether it be on horseback, the tennis court or the golf course – New Orleans is your premier recreation destination.
What's the difference between a creole cottage and a camelback? Find the answer to this and more.
Antiques, cool art, vintage clothing, one of a kind jewelry. We've got it all in the bag.
We've got tours for everyone from the French Quarter & historic homes to voodoo & swamps.

Enjoy the day!  Make it memorable!

    Friday, March 28, 2014

    March 28, 2014 Friday

    Some days are interrupted by life.  Had to spend the day in the ER with my mom.  She had terrible pain in her leg.  Came home with pain medication.  They are thinking arthritis in her hip;

Pilates weight loss -  This is one of my favorite Pilate workouts.  I always feel strong and confident in my posture afterwards.

Psalm 130 - This about continuing to pray even if it feels like nothing is working.  God is always there, always listens and answers in His time, not ours.   Have you ever started out praying for one thing and changed the outcome of your prayer wish, maybe a few times?  You start out praying for a complete recovery, then settle for a lesser level of health, then just comfort and then possibly complete recovery again?  God knows how it will go start to finish, and what the final answer is.

    On this day -
1854 - The Crimean War began with Britain and France declaring war on Russia.. Some things don't change.
1990 - It was Maundy Thursday, a rather solemn experience in church, The Last Supper.  We were attending the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church at the time, but all congregations adapt to what needs to be done, when it needs to be done.  After leaving the sanctuary in silence, while Jesus went to Gethsemane for prayers and betrayal, we went down to the fellowship hall to stuff plastic Easter eggs with jelly beans for the egg hunt on Saturday.  Well, it was better then doing it on Good Friday.

Parenting - Congregations are social groups, built around a communal interest.  It is a lot like family, some you like, some, not so much, but they are family.  Churches need that fellowship and children grow to be involved Christians, when they are included in the life and family of a church.  Nicole probably still remembers that everyone passed the black jelly beans to Pastor Reckling because they were his favorites.

Book Club - Blood and Beauty  I am aghast at the revelations of this book!  Oh the horror.

New Orleans -  So much here to look at.  We are almost ready to leave this place for our next destination, so pick up some mementos:

Antiques, cool art, vintage clothing, one of a kind jewelry. We've got it all in the bag.
From elegant furnishings to hand-smocked dresses — Magazine Street designers are home grown success stories.
Art galleries, world famous restaurants, historic hotels and awe-inspiring architecture – find it all on Royal Street.

    March 26, 2014 Wednesday

My massage therapist gave me a sheet of weight lifting moves to counteract my shoulders rolling forward and strengthen my rotor cuffs.  There are 12 exercises, pretty easy to get through.  As we age that back and neck area tend to hunch forward.  There is an exercise for whatever bad posture you are going for.  Check it out on the internet.

Exodus chapter 8 - about the plaque of frogs.  It says that the magicians of that time could also bring frogs, but they couldn't get rid of them.  Anyone can create chaos, only God can get rid of it.

    On this day -
1793 - The Holy Roman Emperor formally declared war on France. (anyone else see the confusion here?)
1988 -  Eight or Ten of us went to the Shrine Circus.  I love the circus, except now, after reading "Water for Elephant's"  I wonder if the animals are well cared for.  Remember when we would think we would run away to join the circus?  Don't, it isn't all it's cracked up to be, and I can't imagine wearing those skimpy costumes anymore.

Parenting - I guess some young people did run away and join the circus.  Some might have gone because of bad circumstances at home, some maybe for the excitement.  Many young people make this decision, still today.  Unfortunately, for most it doesn't work out well.  Human traffickers are waiting, with drugs and promises to lure them into bad situations.  Keep an eye out for kids you think may be at risk for this behavior, don't take their threats of running away lightly.

Book club - Blood and Beauty by Dunant, as mentioned above, it seems so counterproductive to have the church, waging war, supporting war, or being any part of war.  But they have, read about it here.

    New Orleans - Last few days here, lets see what we missed on our stay;

    March 25, 2014 Tuesday

I just love that AM yoga.  I was at the drug store yesterday, and the girl at the counter and I started talking (as usual)  She said she does yoga.  I told her I LOVE yoga and we were off.  An old lady behind me hit me in the butt with her shopping cart.  (It was my neighbor).  The counter girl's eyes were huge.  very funny.

Psalm 33 - If God made it all, cares for it, loves it and takes it home. How can it be all about you?  He is all about you, but you shouldn't be.

    On this day:
1898 - The Intercollegiate Trapshooting Association was formed in New York City. (for you Don)
1977 - Moved from my little house in Birmingham to my little house in St Clair Shores.  I hate moving.  I think it is one of the reasons I'm still in this house is because I hate moving.  What about you?

Parenting - We moved a lot when I was a kid.  That could be why I have maintained my adult relationships with friends.  I thought it was important for my daughter to have continuity in her life.  She does have friends since kindergarten, but most young people now move away.

Book club - Blood and Beauty by Dunant, the history between Italy, France and Spain as dominated by the Roman Catholic church (Pope).  Politics haven't gotten any better.

    March 24, 2014 Monday

Weights with my personal trainer Denise Austin.  She says "if you rest your rust".  I have moved up to 5 lb weights and can feel the difference.  I guess you have to keep challenging yourself.  Start slow and work up to it.

Mom and I shared Acts chapter 1 titled Jesus Taken Up Into Heaven.  After 40 days of being with his apostles, after he was resurrected, he was taken up into heaven.  Acts says (vs 11)  "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do stand here looking into the sky?  This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven."

    On this day:

1989 - The Exxon Valdez spilled 240,000 barrels (11 million gallons) of oil in Alaska's Prince William Sound after it ran aground.
1975 - I must have gone into work and complained about the condition of some of the artwork at the Dossin Museum on Belle Isle.  We happened to have one of the best artist's in the area for restoration of artwork and frames.  My boss called and donated our services for restoration of a frame on one piece of work there.  I should go and see how it looks 39 years later.

Parenting - Every family has one member that has a harder time making their way through life.  My heart goes out to Jean today, burying her son.  He made some bad choices and paid for them in the long run.  A mother never sees a child as less then her own special child and remembers the day they were born and the joy they gave as a child.  RIP Frank.

Book Club - Blood and Beauty by Dunant, great historical reading.  The review I read was a little hazy as to the accuracy of the truth on this novel.
