Hebrews 13:5 "Never will I leave you".  God does not leave us.  We sometimes don't want Him around when we feel our lives are not to His liking.  He doesn't leave us - we leave Him.  Just know that in your darkest hour, He will never desert you - He will stand by you.  Thank God for that great comfort you can depend on.

On this day
1974 - My brother Mark was 17 years old and having a multitude of problems.  He was taking vocational tests to pass high school, while enduring eye surgery because of his retinitis from his diabetes which caused a multitude of health problems and depression.  He was living with me at the time.  He, fortunately, had a deep faith in God which gave all of us the strength to carry on.

1314 - Scottish forces led by Robert the Bruce won over Edward II of England at the Battle of Bannockburn in Scotland. Sorry, I have a great interest in this history!

Parenting
I have a strong background of family.  Maybe I conceived it myself or maybe I construed it from bits and pieces my family talked about.  In not one of my remembrances were my family, either maternal or paternal - negative in concept.  I have tried to relate that same past history to my daughter so that she knows she comes from an intelligent, strong and honorable background.  I feel bad for those who don't know or wish not to share family history with their youth..It's is important, back it is important to know, also, that you can begin your own family history by being the person you want your offspring to remember.

Ephesians 6:6  "Obey (your earthly masters)... as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart."  We did a Bible study a few years ago on a book God at Work.  We have to show our Christian lives in every aspect of our daily life so that we reflect the laws of God, reflect the life we are suppose to live and to honor God in everything we do. Show that you practice what you preach.

On this day
1968 - I was 21 and in the process of buying my first home.  It was a cute little place that I bought with my fiancee Don in mind.  I was very excited so when my cousin Peggy came by I made her go for a ride and drive by the house with me.  It was an accomplishment I wouldn't have tried without my friend Christine at my back.

1836 - The U.S. Congress approved the Deposit Act, which contained a provision for turning over surplus federal revenue to the states. I would like to know when this stopped happening?  Most likely when they ran out of surplus.

Parenting
Two couples that I have been praying for to have babies both have babies.  Ty and Shannon got a 4 month old little girl in foster with the strong possibility of adoption.  My niece Lindsey and her husband Scott are in their 4th month of pregnancy with a little boy.  Two prayer answered.

Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — A group of bondholders on Tuesday sued Puerto Rico's government as debt negotiations fell apart less than two weeks ahead of what would be the largest default in the island's history.
The suit filed in New York by holders of general obligation bonds seeks to invalidate a debt moratorium and fiscal emergency law passed in early April as the island struggles to restructure $70 billion in public debt.
While Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla has not yet implemented a temporary debt moratorium, many speculate he will soon because Puerto Rico is expected to default on a payment of nearly $2 billion on July 1. That amount includes more than $700 million in general obligation bonds that are supposed to be guaranteed under the island's constitution.
The lawsuit said bondholders relied on that key protection when they bought general obligation bonds two years ago.  This isn't good.

1 Corinthians 14:1  "Follow the way of love."  Paul also said - "faith, hope and love, but the greatest of these is love."  There are many types of love, love of nature, love of your family, love of God but the one that gives us the most trouble is relationship love.  Love thy neighbor as thyself.  All good things come from love.  God is love.

2012  Mom and I went to my neighbor, Roxanne's for a BBQ.  Well she was my neighbor till she moved - but we are still friends.  Her grandchildren were in from California so we had to go and visit. It was an especially sweet memory as the baby finally calmed down and fell asleep in my arms on the swing, followed by the two other brothers who pushed and chatted with me while I held a sleeping Leo.  Such sweet boys.

1404 - Owain Glyndwr established a Welsh Parliament at Machynlleth and was crowned Prince of Wales.  Here is a little history on Wales and a name we never hear.  Owain?

I have two new babies in my life that might give me some baby time.  I am so excited.  There is nothing to me more completely involving than caring for a baby.  I forget everything else, what about you?  (Grandparents probably)

Mark 8:1-13 - This is the feeding of 4,000 people, it says men so maybe more if the women and children weren't considered "men",  He fed them with 7 loaves of bread and 5 fish.  A miracle?  yes, I believe it was.  He had performed many miracles so maybe it was getting mundane, accepted as the norm and not celebrated.  After feeding them he went across the sea and the men there asked him to do some miracles for them.  He declined and left.  Now, do you want a miracle? a healing or special favor? And, if you get it will you remember where it came from and credit the source?  God is good.  You must believe!

2008 - The previous fall my boss had purchased a huge number of bales of hay, the guys at the shop put them all in garbage bags and they brought them to my house and put them around the bottom of my house for insulation in the winter.  It worked, my house was much warmer. BUT on this day (not to complain) I had to get those bags off and put them on the curb for the waste collection.  I had to wear long sleeves and a face mask.  There were at least 70 of them.  I still appreciate the effort of their work BUT I never did it again.  Maybe some of you out there know about rotted hay, the smell and the rash you can get handling it.

1611 - English explorer Henry Hudson, his son and several other people were set adrift in present-day Hudson Bay by mutineers. WEll at least in June it was probably good weather for being set adrift.

I miss my daughter.  She is gone to Stoney Lake camp as program director and I won't see her till August (unless I get a chance to get over there).  This morning I received a gift on facebook, a video of her playing guitar at the campfire they have every night to praise God in music.  Thank you Tamara for sharing!  Tamara is a youth director at ther church and has a group there at camp this week.

Psalm 58:19  "Blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation!"  I too often go through the day without thinking about my good health, the good food I get to eat, my beautiful home with a cat to entertain me, a reliable car to get me to work.  I have a job that I enjoy with people that I can mother and entertain all while making money.  I am challenged to do my best and help a dear friend with his business and he pays me!  I come home to a quiet clean house, or socialize with a wonderful bunch of friends that are amazing.  I have a clean soft bed in a safe environment to sleep in.  It is summer, with warm beautiful days and yards full of flowers and green grass.  And he has saved my life with my Savior Jesus Christ.  God is indeed good.

On this day
Mom was in the hospital, after a fall.  She had been there 4 days so they could check her out, and on this day I went and picked her up and brought her home after work.  I had to cancel a dinner engagement with friends, which was ok, it was more important to make sure she was back on the road to recovery.

0451 - Roman and Barbarian warriors brought Attila's army to a halt at the Catalaunian Plains in eastern France. Did they make a movie of this?   It sounds familiar.

Parenting
There were many days I felt put upon while Mom lived with me.  She was here for 12 or so years, with many hospital visits and doctor appointments and staying home to keep an eye on her.  Today I went to the cemetery to clean up for Father's day. He has been gone since 1960 - but now Mom is there with him.  I wished I could bring her home.  Thank you God for those 12 years.

2005 - I had to wake Nicole up so she coult go to Cincinnati with Mel and Adam for Warp Tour, a music event.  Then I got a call that our friend and Nicole's youth director Bruce and his wife Natalie had a baby girl last night!    Annaliese.

1815 - At the Battle of Waterloo Napoleon was defeated by an international army under the Duke of Wellington. Napoleon abdicated on June 22. When will you meet your waterloo?, remember that song?

Parenting
When I think of all the concerts I have been to I never drove out of state or even too far for them.  Nicole went to a few all day events like this.  She always made wise choices of friends to travel with so I never worried too much.  Haha, yeah right.

Puerto Rican literature and writings are about as old as the country itself. Early settlers would spend many hours picturesquely describing their surroundings and experiences in this newly found country. Spanish writers like Fray Tomas de la Torre and Gonzalo Fernandez are high on the list of noteworthy literates  Looking for a good read?

Nehemiah 8:8  "They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people understood what was being read."   We all need to be reminded of the basic laws and what they mean.  When Jerusalem's new walls went up around the city the prophet Ezra stood up and read from the laws of the Bible for six hours.  The people stood up in reverence, the praised God by lifting their arms and they bowed down in worship.  The first five books of the Bible are what was read, the law,  and the people knew their God and how much he loved them by setting boundaries for them and rules to live by.  Some of us have forgotten those rules and look at our world.

On this day
2002  Nicole was in Savannah Georgia at workcamp.  Mom was at church.  I went to Nicole's soccer banquet for her and filmed, I believe she got the MVP award that year for her goalie skills, which I accepted in her absence. (My life through my children.)

0362 - Emperor Julian issued an edict banning Christians from teaching in Syria. This is in direct opposition to the above reading. Maybe that is what happened to Syria?

Parenting
In the recent news I can't help relate the importance of rules with children.  Stay by me, don't walk away, hold my hand.  It is horrific what can happen to children when they disobey or are ignored by a parent in charge.  I love to think that letting a child have a little free space is great but, think about where you are and the possibilities.  Set boundaries for your children they will be better off for it.

Rio Grande Puerto Rico
As with most of Puerto Rico's culture, the country's cuisine reflects strong Spanish,Mexican, African and American influences. Locally known as Cocina Criolla or Creole Cooking, Puerto Rican traditional cuisine can be traced back to the original inhabitants of the land who feasted on fruit, corn and freshly caught seafood. Later, when Columbus arrived on the scene in 1493, other meat, rice, wheat and oil products were thrown into the mix. These mingled flavors can be tasted in various forms in traditional Puerto Rican cuisine.  YUM!

Judges 2:18 - "Whenever the Lord raised up a judge for them, he was with the judge and saved them out of the hands of their enemies."   We need leadership, as much as we think we can do all on our own, we can't.  We need one another to get through life and we are best off when we depend on those who also depend on God.  "Our greatest privilege is to enjoy God's presence." The study writer said.

On this day
2001  It was a Saturday and Nicole was out of school for the summer, went to church and left with the youth group for work camp (mission work) in West Virginia.  Oh what memories this stirs up huh? Nicole.  Alice and I went to a graduation party for my cousin Marylou's son Chad.  He is now the father of two robust 3 year old twin boys.  Good times.

1858 - In a speech in Springfield, ILU.S. Senate candidate Abraham Lincoln said the slavery issue had to be resolved. He declared, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I wish someone would remind our country of this now.  Phew.

Parenting
My neighbors Ty and Shannon have been desperately wanting a baby for the last 10? years, a long time.  This week their dream came true.  Yesterday they were given a 4 month old baby girl named Nicola with the hope and prayer they will be able to adopt her.  I went there tonight to see how they were getting along with the new addition.  They have moved a mile from me, but said I am still the closest for getting a phone call if they have trouble.  As any new parents they will survive and so will the baby.  It was a joy to see them with her.  "You have to bath them every night?" Her mom and I laughed and nodded.

Rio Grande Puerto Rico
Puerto Rican culture is somewhat complex - others will call it colorful. Culture is a series of visual manifestations and interactions with the environment that make a region and/or a group of people different from the rest of the world. Puerto Rico, without a doubt has several unique characteristics that distinguish our culture from any other.

Acts 2:6  "A crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken."    God changed our languages way back in the early days recorded in the Bible - Babel.  We have attempted to learn each others languages ever since.  To want desperately to understand one another is something we should all strive for in this day and age - not just the language but the things that separate us from loving each other.

On this day
1998 -  My cousin Kathy and I met Norma and Barb at the Mongolian BBQ in Royal Oak.  It was eighteen years ago that we were going to dinner once a month to keep in touch, it was before this actually.  Tonight Kathy and I went to New Baltimore and met Barb, Colleen, Carol, Waynette, Mary and Margaret at Fins for dinner.  I meet Norma for dinner next week.

1389 - Ottoman Turks crushed Serbia in the Battle of Kosovo. How long has this been going on?  Long.

Family
Back to understanding each other - I went into Toronto and stayed with Chris's mom a few times.  She only spoke Macedonian, supposedly.  And yet, she told me her life history, from living in Macedonia, to all the armies that had taken over their country and how they came to Canada to live.  She told of how her husband made the restaurant and how they lived above it, all the while baking the most wonderful bread and toasting peppers on the top of the stove.  I don't speak Macedonian, but I heard her story, understood it and loved her.  If you want to you can understand anything, listen with your heart.

Rio Grande Puerto Rico - culture

It's immediately clear to see the Spanish history in Puerto Rico's architecture. The narrow, winding, cobblestone roads are reminiscent of Andalusia, South of Spain. San Juan is said to be home to over 400 historic sites ranging from examples of classic architecture and old military power.
It is evident that a strong infusion of arts in the history of Puerto Rico has resulted in its people developing artistic flair. Regardless of whether they're taught to fine tune their skills or whether they're just born with it, there's a strong presence and artistic vibe wherever you are in Puerto Rico.
Enjoy the day!  Make it memorable!  Happy Birthday Joe!!
