1 Thessalonians chapter 5  "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."  As a Christian I thank God daily and sing praise to him.  This week in Vacation Bible School, although I have had a bad cough from sinus' and am not a great singer, but I surprised myself at singing all the kids songs to encourage the pre schoolers to listen and watch the leaders to follow.  Some of the songs were tough and had hand signals that were tough for me to follow but the joy in that room was insurmountable.  That kind of joy is only ours in Christ Jesus.

On this day
1984  I was driving an old car, as usual and the brakes went out to the tune of $230.00.  Most people that have money put aside for these obstacles have newer cars and they are prepared.  I never was prepared, but for the grace of God and good friends I always managed.  I had a new husband at this time so it became his problem.  I got home in time to make his mom birthday dinner and 35 years later it is still her birthday.  I still have friends that step up for me and I thank God for them.

1 Thessalonians chapter 5  "Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters...For you yourselves know very well that the day of Lord will come like a thief in the night..."   There is a song I like that this reminds me of this verse.  Stop and Pray - and a verse about - He will come on clouds in bright array.  In other words, you won't be expecting Him.  There will not be a "Coming soon to a theater in you area" sign or ad on your tv.  It will be unexpected - so don't wait to mend your ways, say those prayers or attend worship services.  Get in touch with God now so that whenever Jesus appears on that cloud in bright array you will recognize Him.

On this day
1983  The crew was in from Florida for boat racing in Wyandotte.  They had changed the name Love it to Sasson.  Things were not the same and the boat came in 6th, but the crowd was still the same.  Gilly was up with bobby Shearer and his girlfriend and we closed the bar.  Ty and Norma and Tony and Theresa were there and many others from that racing crowd.  We were the Who's who of boat racing - well we thought so.

Cuisine

Clockwise from top left: LumpiaAdoboHalo-halo and Sisig.
Filipino cuisine has evolved over several centuries from its Malayo-Polynesian origins to become a mixed cuisine with many HispanicChineseAmerican, and other Asian influences that have been adapted to local ingredients and the Filipino palate to create distinctively Filipino dishes. Dishes range from the very simple, like a meal of fried salted fish and rice, to the elaborate, such as the paellas and cocidos created for fiestas.[615][636]
Popular dishes include lechónadobosinigangkare-karetapacrispy patapancitlumpia, and halo-halo. Some common local ingredients used in cooking are calamansi, coconuts, saba (a kind of short wide plantain), mangoesubemilkfish, and fish sauce. Filipino taste buds tend to favor robust flavors, but the cuisine is not as spicy as those of its neighbors.[615][636]
Unlike many Asians, most Filipinos do not eat with chopsticks; they use Western cutlery. However, possibly due to rice being the primary staple food and the popularity of a large number of stews and main dishes with broth in Filipino cuisine, the main pairing of utensils seen at the Filipino dining table is that of spoon and fork, not knife and fork.[637]
The traditional way of eating with the hands known as kamayan (using the washed right hand for bringing food to the mouth)[638] was previously more often seen in the less urbanized areas.[639] However, due to the various Filipino restaurants that introduced Filipino food to people of other nationalities as well as to Filipino urbanites, kamayan fast became popular. This recent trend also sometimes incorporates the "Boodle Fight" concept (as popularized and coined by the Philippine Army), wherein banana leaves are used as giant plates on top of which rice portions and Filipino viands are placed all together for a filial, friendly and/or communal kamayan feasting.[640]

1 Thessalonians chapter 4  "But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.  For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died..."  Death is something that most people fear, not just the being dead part, but how they die.  Back in the days of these disciples they were terrified of being crucified or stoned or other barbaric deaths.  But they took the risk because of the importance of their task and the absence of fear in what death would be like for them.  They were eager to be reunited with Jesus and wanted to share the good news and hope of heaven with all of the followers.  We have that promise as well.

On this day
1982  It was a busy year.  Andy and Ty had moved in with me, the boating season was in full swing along with racing.  Ty bought himself an El Dorado Cadillac and brought it home, there is another story about this car on another day.  Ty and Norma had started dating and she came over to see his new car.  I stopped at Winklemans because after 4th of July all the bathing suits go on sale - and we lived in bathing suits those days.  Fun times and the world changed for all of us.

1754 - The first international boxing match was held. The 25-minute match was won when Jack Slack of Britain knocked out Jean Petit from France.  I mean even by their names you know who will win right?

Values

As a general description, the distinct value system of Filipinos is rooted primarily in personal alliance systems, especially those based in kinship, obligation, friendship, religion (particularly Christianity), and commercial relationships.[632]
Filipino values are, for the most part, centered around maintaining social harmony, motivated primarily by the desire to be accepted within a group.[633] The main sanction against diverging from these values are the concepts of "Hiya", roughly translated as 'a sense of shame', and "Amor propio" or 'self-esteem'.[633] Social approval, acceptance by a group, and belonging to a group are major concerns. Caring about what others will think, say or do, are strong influences on social behavior among Filipinos.[634]
Other elements of the Filipino value system are optimism about the future, pessimism about present situations and events, concern and care for other people, the existence of friendship and friendliness, the habit of being hospitable, religious nature, respectfulness to self and others, respect for the female members of society, the fear of God, and abhorrence of acts of cheating and thievery.[635]
I found this very good and interesting.

1 Thessalonians  chapter 1 "We always give thanks to God for you and mention you in our prayers, constantly remembering before our God and Father your work of faith and labor of love and steadfastness of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ..."    We all need to remember to support and care for those who minister in the name of the Lord.  It can very often be a thankless job with people demanding a lot from them and their time.  I am familiar with people who spend most of their time in service to the Lord and try to encourage and commend them - although that is not why they do it.  Our early missionaries, in this case Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy showed us the heart of God's work and led the way for us to follow.  Do what you can to make a difference in this world for Jesus.

On this day
1981  When I didn't have a boyfriend that I was on call for I worked extra jobs or overtime at my job at Quality.  On this day it said I took deliveries in the afternoon and then put in 2 hours of overtime on the Stuart job.  I obviously don't recall that, but I do remember taking the company van and delivering framed pictures to JL Hudson company and our own two retail stores.  And I usually had on high heels - I lived in them.  It was an artsy kind of job and I guess we looked the part most of time.  I have always been super social and on this day I talked to 8 people after I got home, including my two brothers.  Today I was a slug compared to this.

Visual art

Banaue Ifugao rice god (bulol) carved from wood.
The Spoliarium (1884) by Juan Luna.
Pottery and weaving are among the very first art forms showcasing Filipino artistic design and are evident from cave dwellings all over the country. Among these are mostly anthropomorphic earthenware jars dating from c. 5 BC to 225 AD. Weaving was mostly done by women, using fibers from abaca, pineapple, cotton, and bark to make clothes, rugs and hats. Baskets were mostly utilized to carry grain and other foods.[628][629]
Early Philippine sculpture is characterized by frontal nudity. One of the earliest forms is the bulols by the Ifugao people which serve as an assurance for bountiful harvests. The original functions of these sculptures are related to the ceremonies and beliefs of the tribes who created them. Arab and Russian missionaries also brought beveled type of carvings in the form of Okkil. The beginnings of this sculpture type started with the Islamization of Sulu. The Spanish colonization of the country did not hinder Filipinos creating sculptures for objects of adoration. During this time, sculptures of deities and saints were used to teach Filipinos Christian doctrines. During the American colonialism, worshippers of faith were not discouraged to sculpt in order to adorn churches. Filipinos' first exposure to painting happened when Spain conquered the Philippines and these were used as religious propaganda often displayed in churches. However, as education progressed and wealth increased, more and more artists started to shift from the traditional religious motifs to a more secular pattern of imagery.[630]
Paintings of early modernist painters such as Damián Domingo often still had a religious association but the art of Juan Luna and Félix Hidalgo showed a trend towards political statement. The first Philippine national artist Fernando Amorsolo used post-modernism to produce paintings that illustrated aspects of Philippine culture, while other artists such as Fernando Zóbel used both realistic and abstract techniques.
In the modern period, statuary was integrated with architecture in the Art Deco style. Examples can be seen in statues throughout the country especially in public parks and spaces.[631]

Acts chapter 18  "When he reached Ephesus, he left them there, but first he himself went into the synagogue and had a discussion with the Jews.  When they asked him to stay longer, he declined; but on  taking leave of them, he said, "I will return to you, if God wills."  Paul traveled far and wide, always under a death threat if the Romans and others that did not believe in Jesus found him.  He could never be sure or make a promise to return.  God protected him through many travels.  What would make someone so strong in their belief?  That they would travel at such discomfort and danger to themselves?  If you know Paul's story - how Jesus struck him blind in the middle of a crusade to kill all new Christians and then worked miracles in his life, you might understand his zealousness to tell the Gospel story.

On this day
1979  It was a Friday and my new boyfriend Jim took me to dinner at Mr. Paul's.  They still have the best food on the east side.  My friend Diane worked there as a waitress and had been having health problems.  She was a pretty girl, made prettier by surgery, which I never thought was necessary - but she was kept by some pretty wealthy men.  It didn't end well.  Jim and I went by the Tiki bar and then to Brownies.  Where ever we went I saw Pete (my ex) following and lurking around.  He showed up everywhere.  It's too bad we couldn't work out our problems, I believe we really loved each other.  Love lost.  (Years later when he got married I crashed the wedding)

Dance

Singkil, a Pre-Hispanic dance depicting the Maranao nobility.
Cariñosa, a Hispanic era dance for traditional Filipino courtship.
Just like the evolution of Philippine music, dance as well has been in constant change. Prior to colonial rule, the Philippines had a wide array of ethnic dances from different tribal groups. This was due mainly to the fact that Philippines is an archipelago thus the different varieties of dance developed. Both Luzon and Visayas, at first, were more akin to tribal movements until the Spanish came. Mindanao represents more of an array of Muslim inspired dances and Spanish influence was limited to the region of Zamboanga.
Universal dances in the Philippines are found at societal functions such as rituals, mimicry, life cycle and parties. During the Spanish era, most dances were accompanied by Rondalya music usually with 14-string bandurrias that the Filipinos invented or by other type of stringed instruments that locally evolved in to the culture as well.
One famous dance that is well known is called the Tinikling, where a band of Rondalya musicians play along with the percussive beat of the two bamboo poles. It usually starts with men and women acting a scene about "How rural townsfolk mingle". The dancers then graze thru the clashing of the bamboo poles held on opposite sides. The end displays the paired bamboo poles crossing each other. The Muslim version of this where bamboo poles are also used is called the Singkil.[626]
Cariñosa is a Hispanic Filipino dance, unofficially considered as the "National Dance of the Philippines". It is a courtship dance which involves a woman holding a fan or a handkerchief, where it plays an instrumental role as it places the couple in romance scenario.
Nowadays, in the Modern and Post-Modern time periods, dances may vary from the delicate ballet up to the more street-oriented styles of breakdancing to name a few.[627]

Acts chapter 17  "From one ancestor he made all nations to inhabit the whole earth, and he allotted the times of their existence and the boundaries of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope for him and find him --though indeed he is not far from each one of us."  As a blind person would search or grope for something they dropped on the floor - so we too search for something we know is there but have lost.  As Paul says he is not far from us and you know he exists but you need to know him better.  You need to be still and know that He is God.  Look around you at the world you know, at what you are familiar with that He is put into your life to enjoy.

On this day
1978  Andy, Adele and Merri came over for dinner and I had picked up Grandma to join us.  Adele brought along a tape recorder and because she was interested in genealogy she got Gram talking about her childhood and life back in Scotland.  Grandma and Grandpa didn't come to this country until the 40's, long after their children had come and settled.  There has been some discord in our family over the tape.  I am trying to forgive and forget this issue so I won't go into details.  I do remember when it was played back that Grandma said that it was definitely not her speaking, she didn't believe she had that heavy a brogue.

Music

Percussion instruments that make up the Philippine kulintang ensemble, an example of pre-Hispanic musical tradition
Philippine music has evolved rapidly due to the different influences stemming from colonialism under other countries. Before the Spanish conquest of the islands, most music was reminiscent of, or heavily influenced by, nature. Some examples of this tribal music is Koyu No Tebulul of the T'boli and Ambo Hato of the Ifugao. This genre is often accompanied by gong music and one well known instrument is the Kulintang.
During the Spanish era Rondalya music, where traditional string orchestra mandolin type instruments were used, was widespread. In the Philippines, Rondalya refers to any group of stringed instruments that are played using a plectrum or pick. Filipino instruments are made from indigenous Philippine wood; plectrums, or picks, are made from tortoise-shell. Other stringed instruments composing the standard Filipino rondalla are the 14-string bandurria found only in the Philippines, the laúd, the octavina, the Twelve-string guitar, the Ukulele, the bajo de uñas or double bass, the Guitarrón mexicano, and other Filipino-made instruments modeled and developed after the guitar. Harana and Kundiman are prevalent during this time wherein these songs are often used in courtship rituals.[622]
Marcelo Adonay (organist), Simplicio Solis (organist), Diego C. Perez (pianist), Jose Conseco (pianist) and Doña Dolores Paterno (composer) were some of the recognized musicians in this era. Nowadays, American pop culture has a heavy hold on the Filipinos that evolved from the Spanish times when the American occupation happened. Along with Korean pop, these two are dominating the recent music scene in media.[623][624] However, the revival of Spanish-influence folk music has been possible thanks to the different choir groups coming in and going out of the country, such as the Philippine Madrigal Singers.[625]

Escalante Philippines
One of the most visible Hispanic legacies is the prevalence of Spanish names and surnames among Filipinos; a Spanish name and surname, however, does not necessarily denote Spanish ancestry. This peculiarity, unique among the people of Asia, came as a result of a colonial edict by Governor-General Narciso Clavería y Zaldua, which ordered the systematic distribution of family names and implementation of Hispanic nomenclature on the population.[613] The names of many streets, towns, and provinces are also in Spanish.
The common use of the English language is an example of the American impact on Philippine society. It has contributed to the ready acceptance and influence of American pop cultural trends. This affinity is seen in Filipinos' love of fast food and American film and music. Fast food outlets are found on many street corners. American global fast food chain stalwarts have entered the market, but local fast food chains like Goldilocks and most notably Jollibee, the leading fast food chain in the country, have emerged and compete successfully against their foreign rivals.[614][615

"  Paul had a captive audience!!  So he explained to them that the real God is not created by man's hands but is the creator of all things - of the earth and everything on it.  He explained that a man from God had come to tell everyone that they should repent and believe and that they should believe Him because he had been raised from the dead.  He made many converts - Greeks, men and woman who followed him into the true faith.

1976  I just saw on Facebook that an old friend, Rich Lesko had a birthday today.  Well Rich has been gone for a few years now - but is remembered in my journal today.  All of our boat friends had converged on the back bay at Metro.  I had been with Pete for 3 or so years at this time and was amazed at the number of people he knew, well so did I now.   I took shish kebab (a lot of it) to the BBQ and cooked it.  I didn't do this often but it was a big hit and requested often after this.  Later we went to a surprise party for Rich for his birthday.  He was a person that not everyone was fond of - but it was a party and everyone liked a party.  Do you know someone like that?  Someone who irritates everyone, always shows up empty handed but everyone tolerates?

Philippine culture is a combination of Eastern and Western cultures. The Philippines exhibits aspects found in other Asian countries with a Malay[611]heritage, yet its culture also displays a significant number of Spanish and American influences. Traditional festivities known as barrio fiestas (district festivals) to commemorate the feast days of patron saints are common, these community celebrations are times for feasting, music, and dancing. The Ati-AtihanMoriones and Sinulog festivals are a couple of the most well-known.
Some traditions, however, are changing or gradually being forgotten due to modernization. The Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company has been lauded for preserving many of the various traditional folk dances found throughout the Philippines. They are famed for their iconic performances of Philippine dances such as the tinikling and singkil that both feature clashing bamboo poles.[612]
