Psalm 112
Their descendants will be mighty in the land;
the generation of the upright will blessed.
Wealth and riches are in their houses,
and their righteousness endures forever.
They rise in the darkness as a light for the upright.
God does not request that you live in a poor state, He is known to gift his children with wealth and good things.  It is not money but  the love of money that separates you from God.  He promises good things to his children - in abundance.

1978  On the way home from work I stopped at Andy and Adele's for dinner, (and to see Merri) and then stopped to grocery shop.  When I got home I cleaned house and did laundry.  It was a Thursday and just before Labor Day weekend.  That meant everything had to be done and ready to be out on the boat for 3 days.  It was so much fun but now I'd be happy with a few hours at the Jazz festival on the river front.  The other sounds like too much work, lol.

1881 - The first tennis championships in the U.S. were played. Some things don't change - it is all about tennis on TV today.

Romans chapter 8  "We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose."  We may not see the larger picture of our labor but God does.  Whatever small  thing you are doing in your neighborhood to make it better is joining with others who are also working to make your neighborhood and city better for all who live there.  God gives us tools to reach out to others and in doing so we share the faith when others see what gives us our drive.  Your kindness and eagerness to help tells people you believe in a higher standard - God's standard for good living and eternal reward.

1977  After work I went home to my house in St Clair Shores that I had just moved into this year.  I have a double lot and in those days there was a white board fence across the front of the side in front of the garage and a small evergreen tree maybe 12 feet high.  There was a lot of  lawn to cut, which is what I did when I got home.  Then Pete came home and we hurried down to a marina downtown to see a boat he was interested in.  I think he talked me into the house because of the huge attached garage so he could buy old boats and work on the parts in the garage.

1146 - European leaders outlawed the crossbow. I think some still use these.

Romans chapter 5  "Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our hope of sharing the glory of God."  It is so hard to explain the peace and comfort we have in our faith to someone who has not experienced it.  When you are cleansed of sin and the guilt that it carries, there is a freedom that causes you to breathe and relax.  If you are burdened with grief and guilt for things in your life it is hard to move on and be happy with who you are.  In Christ we have been forgiven, not to continue to sin, for as humans it is impossible to not sin.  Our God is  huge in forgiveness, he knows your heart and knows if you are truly sorry - his forgiving loving heart is farther than east or west and north or south.  There are no boundaries to his love for you - He just wants you to know Him.

1976    Chris left work early to go into Toronto and after work I stopped at the gas station where my brother Mark was working.  This seemed like a good job for him, except, his legs were already giving him trouble, at 19, from his diabetes.  He had an apartment with another guy right across the street and I checked on him regularly to make sure there was food, etc.  As I said, it didn't last - his health was already on the down slide.  When I got home to my home in Birmingham Pete was waiting for me to get ready and go to a birthday party out on the east side.  From there we just stayed on the boat all weekend.

1789 - The Declaration of the Rights of Man was adopted by the French National Assembly.   This might be an interesting read - what are the rights of man?

Aboriginal rock art is the oldest continuous art tradition in the world, dating as far back as 60,000 years. From the Bradshaw and Wondjina imagery in the Kimberley to the Sydney rock engravings, it is spread across hundreds of thousands of sites, making Australia the richest continent in terms of prehistoric art.[55]19th-century Indigenous activist William Barak painted ceremonial scenes, such as corroborees.[56] The Hermannsburg School, led by Albert Namatjira, received national fame in the 1950s for their desert watercolors.[57] Leading critic Robert Hughes saw contemporary Indigenous art as "the last great art movement of the 20th century".[58] Key exponents such as Emily Kame KngwarreyeRover Thomas and the Papunya Tula group use acrylic paints on canvas to depict dreamingsset in a symbolic topography. Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri's Warlugulong (1977) typifies this style, popularly known as "dot painting". Art is important both culturally and economically to Indigenous society; central Australian Indigenous communities have "the highest per capita concentrations of artists anywhere in the world".[59] Issues of race and identity are raised in the works of many 'urban' Indigenous artists, including Gordon Bennett and Tracey Moffatt.

Romans chapter 4  "Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due.  But to one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness."  You cannot earn God's love by being good or doing good works - it is God's love that gives you your faith to believe in that gift of love.  All good gifts are from heaven above.  Our Father wants us to have what we need in abundance, you need to have that faith to believe that.

1974  Don't judge me, it was a Monday and I called in sick, my journal says I had a bad cold.  But, later that day Pete called and said we had tickets to the Chicago concert at Pine Knob with friends.  They were really good tickets and what I remember is that it was soooooo loud and we were up front. Miraculously healed.

Literature[edit]

As the convict era passed—captured most famously in Marcus Clarke's For the Term of His Natural Life (1874), a seminal work of Tasmanian Gothic[34]—the bush and Australian daily life assumed primacy as subjects. Charles HarpurHenry Kendall and Adam Lindsay Gordon won fame in the mid-19th century for their lyric nature poems and patriotic verse. Gordon drew on Australian colloquy and idiom; Clarke assessed his work as "the beginnings of a national school of Australian poetry".[35] First published in serial form in 1882, Rolf Boldrewood's Robbery Under Arms is regarded as the classic bushranging novel.  Some good reading!

1 Corinthians chapter 15  "Then comes the end, when he hands over the kingdom of God to the Father, after he has destroyed every ruler and every authority and power."   God did not create politics or rulers.  His original thought was that we would live here on earth in a loving kind life and He would be our God.  But we didn't go that way, and now we have many rulers and many gods, the worst of which is sin  and the anger and hate that life style brings on us.  We are ruled by the love of money and power.  But it won't last, God will have the last Word.

1967  I was 20 years old and crazy about my boyfriend Don Michie and as my journal on this day, says we had been going "steady" for 11 months.  I find this entry humorous, typical 20 year old stuff.  "I called Don - wanted me to meet him at the clubhouse - hung up on me.  (bought wig)  I then went to meet him at the club and we went on a ride to the State Fair and the Highwaymen's clubhouse.  Now, there wan't internet in those days so I must have gone somewhere to buy a wig - I do remember it was red, and altered my personality.

Humor[edit]

Dame Edna Everage, a comic creation of Barry Humphries
Comedy is an important part of the Australian identity. The "Australian sense of humor" is often characterized as dry, irreverent and ironic, exemplified by the works of performing artists like Barry Humphries and Paul Hogan.[25]
The convicts of the early colonial period helped establish anti-authoritarianism as a hallmark of Australian comedy. Influential in the establishment of stoic, dry wit as a characteristic of Australian humor were the bush balladeers of the 19th century, including Henry Lawson, author of "The Loaded Dog".[26] His contemporary, Banjo Paterson, contributed a number of classic comic poems including The Man from Ironbark and The Geebung Polo ClubCJ Dennis wrote humor in the Australian vernacular – notably in The Songs of a Sentimental Bloke. The Dad and Dave series about a farming family was an enduring hit of the early 20th century. The World War I ANZAC troops were said to often display irreverence in their relations with superior officers and dark humor in the face of battle.[27]
Australian comedy has a strong tradition of self-mockery, from the outlandish Barry McKenzie expat-in-Europe ocker comedies of the 1970s, to the quirky outback characters of the "Crocodile" Dundee films of the 1980s, the suburban parody of Working Dog Productions' 1997 film The Castle and the dysfunctional suburban mother–daughter sitcom Kath & Kim. In the 1970s, satirical talk-show host Norman Gunston (played by Garry McDonald), with his malapropisms, sweep-over hair and poorly shaven face, rose to great popularity by pioneering the satirical "ambush" interview technique and giving unique interpretations of pop songs. Roy and HG provide an affectionate but irreverent parody of Australia's obsession with sport.
The unique character and humor of Australian culture was defined in cartoons by immigrants, Emile Mercier and George Molnar, and in the novel They're a Weird Mob (1957) by John O'Grady, which looks at Sydney through the eyes of an Italian immigrant. Post-war immigration has seen migrant humor flourish through the works of Vietnamese refugee Anh Do, Egyptian-Australian stand-up comic Akmal Saleh and Greek-Australian actor Nick Giannopoulos.

2 Corinthians chapter 10  "Indeed, we live as human beings, but we do not wage war according to human standards; for the weapons of our warfare are not merely human, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds."  God's power is unmeasured on this earth.  We can't invent anything that would destroy God, although there are those who try.  Our power is in our faith and in the knowledge that we belong to Christ.  Our weapons are love and understanding, justice and righteousness, kindness and caring and an intense love to share the story of Jesus.  They can never take that away from us.  I love to tell the story.

2018  This was a sad day because the evergreen in my front yard, that had been maybe 10 feet tall when I bought this house had in a month turned brown and dropped all its needles.  I was heartbroken but it had to come down today.  It had grown up like Nicole except it had a definite easterly lean to it that worried my neighbor.  It was the tree that Nicole and I decided to decorate one year, by tying a string tied to the Christmas lights and then anchored to a Nerf ball that Nicole expertly lofted over the top of the tree to set the lights at the top and then for an hour we went around and around, attaching more lights as we went till we reached the bottom and attempted to plug in the tree.  We had the wrong end at the bottom.  Yes, we did undo and redo it.  It was also the tree the kids would climb and get all sappy from when they were little.  I still miss it, the yard looks way different.

1839 - Hong Kong was taken by the British in a war with China. Hard to believe anyone could take anything from China.

Language[edit]
C. J. Dennis, poetic humorist of Australian English
Although Australia has no official language, it is largely monolingual with English being the de facto national languageAustralian English is a major variety of the language which is immediately distinguishable from BritishAmerican, and other national dialects by virtue of its unique accents, pronunciations, idioms and vocabulary, although its spelling more closely reflects British versions rather than American. According to the 2011 census, English is the only language spoken in the home for around 80% of the population. The next most common languages spoken at home are Mandarin (1.7%), Italian (1.5%), and Arabic (1.4%); almost all migrants speak some English.[22] Australia has a sign language known as Auslan, which in 2004 was the main language of about 6,500 deaf people.[23]
It is believed that there were between 200 and 300 Australian Aboriginal languages at the time of first European contact, but only about 70 of these have survived and all but 20 are now endangered. An indigenous language is the main language for 0.25% of the population.[24]

2 Corinthians chapter 9  "Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."  We should give out of our abundance, with a smile and not a look of smug satisfaction.  Most everyone I know gives generously - be it time, goods or material.  What you give is between you and God and of course the recipient.  It helps, I think for them to know that we give to honor our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ so that they know that is where our hearts are and our love for all people.  It really is better to give than to receive.

2017  I looked at my exercise sheet from this year and see that I was strong- exercising 6 days a week most of the time and so had the energy and strength to be busy.  This is my memo to self - get it back!
After my morning routine I went to Salvaggio's and then stopped over at my cousin Barb's with some lunch for her.  She had broke her leg/foot and was layed up for a horrible amount of time this year. Later my cousin Kathy picked me up and we went to O'Brien's for dinner, (love their smelt and perch) and later that evening Nicole got home from taking Kristin to Ohio to Trinity Seminary for her two year beginning to becoming a Pastor.  It seemed like it would be forever but now it is here and working out beautifully.  God is good.

Development of Australian culture[edit]

A Luritja man demonstrating method of attack with boomerang under cover of shield (1920)
The oldest surviving cultural traditions of Australia—and some of the oldest surviving cultural traditions on earth—are those of Australia's Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Their ancestors have inhabited Australia for between 40,000 and 60,000 years, living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. In 2006, the Indigenous population was estimated at 517,000 people, or 2.5 per cent of the total population.[5] Most Aboriginal Australians have a belief system based on the Dreaming, or Dream time, which refers both to a time when ancestral spirits created land and culture, and to the knowledge and practices that define individual and community responsibilities and identity.[6] Conflict and reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians has been a source of much art and literature in Australia, and ancient Aboriginal artistic styles and iconic inventions such as the boomerang, the didgeridoo and Indigenous Australian music have become symbols of modern Australia.   Solid ancestry!

2 Corinthians chapter 5  "For all of us must appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each may receive recompense for what has been done in the body, whether good or evil."  In the Apostles Creed we say "from then He shall come to judge the living and the dead"  So,  we need to think about how that is going to go for us.  We know our sins are forgiven but are we thankful enough? have we confessed our knowledge of our sins to God?  Have we asked forgiveness of sins that we didn't know of or things we should have but didn't do?  Have we served  the Lord as requested?  Helped the poor?  We know that we have salvation through grace, are we appropriately appreciative of that?  In my prayers I say that I fall short of all I can be and should be and things I am unaware of, is it enough?

2016  This was a rough year in the ice cream truck business.  I worked the entire summer - 7 days a week with 2 other girls working the counter, Carly and Paradise.  In the beginning it was all fun and money but as the summer wore on it became tedious and the girls were tired of working.  Carly, same Carly as this year had quit mid summer (same as this year).  Paradise and I kept working and then a young girl (Ukrainian) which might be why I hired her hired in.  She wanted to work in the freezer but I needed her in the office.  It worked out well.....for a while.  This was a Sunday and we closed at 2.  Waynette came over for dinner and then we went to Dragonmeade for beer and hymns.  A bright spot after a long week.

Meat[edit]

Kangaroo meat found in restaurants, supermarkets or butchers
Kangarooemu and crocodile meat is available in Australia, although it is not among the most commonly eaten meats. In colonial recipes, kangaroo was treated much like ox tail, and braised until tender forming a rich gravy. It is available today in various cuts and sausages.[33][34]
Sheep grazing in rural Australia. Early British settlers introduced Western stock and crops
Lamb is very popular in Australia, with roasting cuts (legs and shoulders), chops, and shanks being the most common cuts. Lamb will often form part of either a Sunday roast or a barbecue. It is also commonly found as an ingredient in doner kebabs, a dish of Turkish origin that has been popular in Australia since the 1970s. Australia consumes more sheep meat than any other country listed by the OECD-FAO (with Kazakhstan in second place). In 2017, Australians consumed an average of 8.5 kilograms (19 lb) per person. By way of comparison, New Zealanders average 3.2 kilograms (7.1 lb) and Americans just 0.4 kilograms (0.88 lb).[35

2 Corinthians chapter 4  "So we do not lose heart.  Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day."   We love our young lives when all we think about is our future and what we will do, who we will marry, where we will go and if we are smart- where we will praise God for all we have.  As we get older all those previous things become further back on the list and our connection with God becomes more in the forefront.  By the grace of God, usually, for a lot of us, our faith grows deeper and more meaningful to us.  So, we do not lose heart, whether our lives have been full, happy, bounteous, and healthy we have reached that time when our future is more about God - serving, praising and  loving our Savior.  And, it is ok, as a matter of fact it is perfect.

Fruit[edit]

Granny Smith apple
There are many species of Australian native fruits, such as Quandong (native peach), WattleseedMuntries / Munthari berry, Illawarra plumsRiberry, Native Raspberries and Lilli pillies.[30] These usually fall under the category of "bush tucker", (bush foods), which are used more commonly in restaurants and used in commercial preserves and pickles but are not generally well known to Australians due to low availability.
Australia also has large fruit growing regions in most states for tropical fruits in the north, stone fruits and temperate fruits in the south which has a mediterranean or temperate climate. The Granny Smith variety of apples first originated in Sydney, Australia in 1868.[31] Another well-known Australian apple variety is the Cripps Pink, known locally and internationally as "Pink Lady" apples, which was first cultivated in 1973.
Fruits cultivated and consumed in Australia include: apples, banana, kiwi fruit, oranges and other citrus, mangoes (seasonally), mandarin, stonefruit, avocado, watermelons, rockmelons, lychees, pears, nectarines, plums, apricots, grapes, melons, papaya (also called pawpaw), pineapple, passionfruit and berries (strawberries, raspberries etc.).[32]  Good choices!!!

Coffee[edit]

flat white with latte art.
Australia has a distinct coffee culture. The coffee industry has grown from independent cafĂ©s since the early 20th century. The flat white first became popular in Australia, and its invention is claimed by a Sydneysider.[27][28]
The iconic Greek cafĂ©s of Sydney and Melbourne were the first to introduce locally roasted coffees in 1910. In 1952, the first espresso machines began to appear in Australia and a plethora of fine Italian coffee houses were emerging in Melbourne and Sydney. Pelligrini's Espresso Bar and Legend CafĂ© often lay claim to being Melbourne's first ‘real’ espresso bars, opening their doors in 1954 and 1956 respectively. This decade also saw the establishment of one of Australia's most iconic coffee brands, Vittoria, which remains the country's largest coffee maker and distributor. The brand has existed in Australia since 1958, well before it moved to the US.[29]
Although Australians often drink tea at home, it has been found that in out-of-home establishments where tea and coffee are sold together, tea accounted for only 2.5% of total sales. To this day, coffee chains such as Starbucks have very little market share in Australia, with other homegrown franchises such as Hudsons Coffee and Gloria Jean's Coffees also contributing to the smaller coffee chain market share.

The Australian wine Industry is the fifth largest exporter of wine around the world, with 760 million litres a year to a large international export market and contributes $5.5 billion per annum to the nation's economy. Australians consume over 530 million litres annually with a per capita consumption of about 30 litres – 50% white table wine, 35% red table wine.[23] Wine is produced in every state, with more than 60 designated wine regions totalling approximately 160,000 hectares. Australia's wine regions are mainly in the southern, cooler parts of the country, in South AustraliaNew South WalesVictoria, and Western Australia. Amongst the most famous wine districts are the Hunter RegionMargaret RiverYarra Valley, and Barossa Valley and among the best known wine producers are PenfoldsRosemount EstateWynns Coonawarra Estate and Lindeman's.[24]
Beer in Australia has been popular since colonial times. James Squire is considered to have founded Australia's first commercial brewery in 1798 and the Cascade Brewery in Hobart, Tasmania, has been operating since the early 19th century. Since the 1970s, Australian beers have become increasingly popular globally - with Fosters lager being an iconic export brand. However, Fosters is not a large seller on the local market, with alternatives such as Victoria Bitter & Carlton Draught outselling the popular export. Craft beer is popular, as well as distinctive products from smaller breweries such as Coopers and Little Creatures.[25]
Rum served as a currency during the late 18th and early 19th centuries in Australia when metallic currency was in short supply.[26]   I like their wine!  and the beer!
