Pastor Beebe's sermon was about Peter or Simon Peter being called the rock by Jesus, and then he turned around and called him a stumbling stone. We all make mistakes but will all be glorified because Jesus has bought our forgiveness through his death on the cross.
On this day:
1997 - Took Nicole and Jamie downtown to the Jazz Fest. I must have bribed them, but I get desperate to go to the Jazz festival.. oh I see here at the bottom, I bought them Travis burgers for dinner. That's how I got them to go.
1887 - The kinetoscope was patented by Thomas Edison. The device was used to produce moving pictures. Who is spending this holiday weekend watching a marathon of movies? Thank that guy.
Parenting - We have all forced our kids to go or do something they don't want to. Hey! Our parents did it to us. It prepares you in life to learn that sometimes you have to go with the program, until you are the one in charge of the program. Then you still have to do things you might not want to. Guess there wasn't really a lesson here.
Book Club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. I really want to see this TV series now that I am on the last 100 pages of this book, which is the 4th in the series. She writes to the end, the suspense is still there.
Cairo Egypt - Last day here - pack up and get ready to go to Damascus Syria. I know they are a hellhole right now, but I think it is important to know your enemies, be nice so you can pour hot coals on their heads. (Read the Bible for explanation) Serious history here. Aren't you glad it is just on line travel?
Enjoy the day! Make it memorable! Happy birthday Grandma, you would have been 139 today.

Did some Pilates with a steel ring, anything to hurt myself. Doing a lot of walking later today too.
2 Chronicles chapter 15 - Not a real well known chapter to me. King Asa realized that God had deserted his country, due to lack of worship. HE knew the only way to save his people was to force them back to the ways of the Lord. Not always a popular thought, but it worked and the Israeli nation was saved, yet again. Are we lost due to lack of participation?
On this day:
1992 - We went out on the 36' Four Winns. It was a beautiful boat, a demo for the boat store that Dad allowed us to use. It was a rare occasion when Andy, Alice and the girls could make it on a day that we had the boat. As it turned out it was a very rough windy day, but I'm sure still enjoyed by all.
1991 - The Soviet republic of Azerbaijan declared its independence. I am seeing a pattern.
Parenting - Andy and Alice had shared custody of his daughters and he was a police officer. Between work hours and the availability of his girls, planning events with each other was haphazard. We spent a lot of time in their yard or mine with last minute plans most of the time. But we always found time together.
Book Club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon - What else could go wrong? Clair has shared her penchant for finding trouble with her daughter Brianna.
Cairo Egypt - Finishing up here... pack up your stuff and go see something you missed.

Did some interval training with Jillian. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.
John chapter 13 - This is about humility. Jesus washed his disciples feet and he wants us to wash each others feet. He was a servant to those he loved and he loved us so much, he gave his life.
On this day:
1991 - Aaron was finishing up with golf lessons. Fall activities were starting up, I had a Sunday School teachers meeting.
1995 - The biggest bank in the U.S. was created when Chase Manhattan and Chemical Bank announced their $10 billion deal. Today in the news again, Chase was hacked. They said it happens all the time. Make you feel better?
Parenting - Aaron is now a family man with 3 kids and a wife, and more then one job. I don't think he finds time right now to golf, but I hope in the future it will give him something to get back into.
Book Club - The Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. Now we have Brianna on a ship to the colonies, followed by Roger (her boyfriend from the 1970's) on a ship a couple months later. Are these 4 people ever going to be reunited?
Cairo Egypt - Get some souveniers! We are running out of time!

Did 12 exercises on a sheet my physical therapist gave me. They include plank, downward facing dog and triangle poses. One that has you with your toes on something 3" high and heals on the floor. Hold for 30 seconds, do 5 reps. Try it. It really stretches out the calf muscles, feels great!
1 Kings chapter 19 - Elijah is still trying to escape the King. He sat under a broom bush and fell asleep. An angel woke him up and gave him food. Twice. We are naysayers aren't we? Did he not care that an angel was taking care of him? Was his desire to die that strong that he ignored an angel of God that brought him food? How defiant are you about going down a destructive path?
On this day:
1990 - Nicole had her last day of bumper bowling. She was 5 at the time and always at Grandma's that day because I worked that day, so I never got to see the league play. I always heard from grandma how good she was though. The next day was the end of the bowling banquet. I got to go to that.
1990 - The U.S. State Department ordered the expulsion of 36 Iraqi diplomats. This had already started I guess. Hmm who was president then? George HW Bush.
Parenting - Who teaches their 9 year old daughter to shoot an oozie? spl
Book club - Drums of Autumn - by Diana Gabaldon. Brianna, Jamie and Clair's daughter has gone through the stones, back in time 200 years to find her parents.
Cairo Egypt - How to celebrate?
Traditional Egyptian Cuisine
One traditional meal is the kebob. Kebobs have become extremely popular, and have morphed, in the past fifty years. The traditional kebob is a skewer filled with meat and vegetables. Now kebobs are made from just about anything, from fruit and nuts to fish and desserts. Kebobs can be found at many roadside stands, and in a number of restaurants, as well. ah ha!

August 26, 2014 Tuesday Woman's Equality Day!
I did some Pilates today. It is titled Pilates Weight loss. Ok. It is a great work out.
Psalm 119 - vs 97 - 106 This is a very long psalm and is divided up into smaller paragraphs. I will be singing the one line all day - "Your word is a lamp to my feet and light to my path." God gives us the right paths to follow, so we don't get lost.
On this day;
1986 - I went shopping to Pete and Franks on 9 Mile in Eastpointe. It was a family owned fresh grocer with deli that I loved going to. Unfortunately it did not survive the depression we just came through. The same 10 - 15 people worked there all the time, wonder how they are doing. They are building a new CVS on that location now. Drugs not apples, seems a bad trade off.
55 B.C. - Britain was invaded by Roman forces under Julius Caesar. They didn't like Scotland though because they wore sandals and Scotland has those nasty thistles. That is why the thistle is the national plant of Scotland.
Parenting - If I ever had the chance, again, I would take my daughter back to Scotland, she would enjoy it there so much.
Book Club Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon - speaking of Scots. Clair has her hands full with a break out of measles. Deadly back in the 1700's.

August 25, 2014 Monday
Started the week with some weights. I read an article over the weekend about people in their 60's should do more interval training. Tomorrow I will read something else and do that. But keep doing something!
Acts chapter 1 - Jesus taken up into heaven. Like anyone else Jesus had a to do list. Baptize the disciples with the Holy Spirit. Visit with enough people so they know I was raised from the dead. Reassure the people that you will always be with them. Remind them to share the good news of the Gospel. Tell them to stay faithful and wait for my return. Assure them I will be back.
On this day:
1985 - This time of year, back in the day, seems like we were always at Northport or Traverse City for a boat race. This was the first one up there that I took the kids to. Nicole was only 3 months old. The cabin we stayed in was super rustic. We all survived. I spent the night eyes wide open, listening to the scurrying of who knew what, in the cabin. Aaron thought it was fine, an adventure for a 7 year old.
1998 - A survey released said that 1/3 of Americans use the Internet. Wonder what it is today? 16 years later.
Parenting - Another child shot in a drive by shooting today. In keeping with protesting maybe all the children should go out in the streets with signs saying "hands up - don't shoot" .
Book club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Galbaldon. Clair had gone off to a neighboring farm to deliver a baby and was lost in a rain storm and flooding rivers on the way home. She is confronted with a strange being in the woods after finding a human skeleton head in a log she was hiding in.
Cairo Egypt - Last week here, what else can we find.

The sermon this morning was Who do you say Jesus is? We know Peter knew that Jesus was the Messiah, the son of the living God. It is important that we know who He is, in our lives.
On this day:
1968 I spent the night before and the next 2 days in the main lock up, down at Beaubien in Detroit.. Everybody needs to learn a lesson occasionally. My fiancée, Don had given me a small .32 pistol to carry in my purse since I lived in Detroit and it was after the riots. You must have a permit to carry a gun, and I did not. To make matters worse, I was with the motorcycle group when the police found it. It was one of the worse weekends I ever spent in my life, I do not carry or even touch guns now. We are all expected to obey the law.
1954 - The Communist Party was virtually outlawed in the U.S. when the Communist Control Act went into effect. This is against the law also.
Parenting - I did not see the advantage to keeping my misadventures a secret from my daughter. It was a lesson well learned. Besides, my friends were all to eager to share my stories, now I will put them in a book.
Book Club - The Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. Jamie has decided whether to stay on and help out his Aunt with her large, successful plantation or go off to build his own empire. Meanwhile their daughter 200 years later is in a relationship that is heating up in Scotland.
Cairo Egypt -- What to do on a Sunday afternoon.

The most famous site in Egypt, and the one that appears on almost every tour package, this is the oldest and largest of the pyramids on the Giza Plateau. Built by the IV Dynasty pharaoh Khufu (better known as Cheops) around 2570 BCE, this 140-meter (460-foot)-high monument contains an estimated 2.3 million blocks averaging 2270 kilograms (2.5 tons). Its purpose is controversial: Many believe it was the ancient burial chamber of the pharaoh and his queen, while others suggest it had astronomical functions. As no inscriptions or mummies were found inside, speculation continues. It is now illegal to climb the pyramid, but you can go inside. After a descent at a crouch, a steep ascending passage leads to the Grand Gallery and two chambers. The King's Chamber contains a lidless granite sarcophagus while the so-called Queens Chamber was found empty. A separate ticket is required to enter each pyramid and the Solar Boat Museum. More

Slept in, ahhhh. Going for a walk for sure later.
Matthew chapter 5 - Blessed are you who are persecuted in my name, Jesus says. And the answer to this is to share the light that he gives us with those who live in the dark. Random acts of kindness today. Try it.
On this day:
2006 - My bosses girlfriend got word that her son that lived in Florida had commited suicide. He was a very successful day trader, with a beautiful home, he was young, single and extremely good looking. What is important enough in our lives to keep us from doing that? In the face of Robin Williams, what thread connects those who make this decision. I know depression, which is caused by any number of things, including drug and alcohol abuse is a big factor. Is that the cause or a by-product? Sad.
1858 - "Ten Nights in a Barroom" opened in New York City at the National Theater. It was a melodrama about the evils of drinking maybe they need to bring this back?
Parenting - Out to dinner last night with Don, we had a group at the next table with a 6 month old baby girl. The 2 couples were the babies grandparents. Now that was a doted on baby. While Don and I talked I could feel someone looking at me and here it was little Ella Jean, the baby. Of course I made baby small talk and laughed with her and she responded every time with a head back, open mouth smile, which delighted her grandparents and Don and I as well. A real crowd pleaser. Nothing like a baby to make your day.
Book Club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. Clair and Jamie finally meet wild Indians, and a bear.
Cairo Egypt - lets see what else they have:
The history of Egyptian cuisine begins with Ancient Egypt. Archaeological excavations have revealed that workers on the Great Pyramids of Giza were paid in bread, beer, and onions,[citation needed] apparently their customary diet as peasants in the Egyptian countryside. Dental analysis and the desiccated loaves occasionally found in excavated tombs confirm this, in addition to indicating that ancient Egyptian bread was made with flour from emmer wheat. Beer disappeared as a mainstay of Egyptian life at some point following the Muslim conquest of Egypt in the year 641, but onions remain the primary vegetable for flavoring and nutrition in Egyptian food. Beans, particularly fava beans, were also a primary source of protein for the mass of the Egyptian populace, and remain so today.
Egyptian cuisine is notably conducive to vegetarian diets, as it relies heavily on vegetable dishes. Although food in Alexandria and on the Egyptian coast tends to use a great deal of fish and other seafood, for the most part Egyptian cuisine is based on foods that grow out of the ground. Meat has been very expensive for most Egyptians throughout history, and many vegetarian dishes have developed to work around this economic reality.

AM yoga. aaaahhhhh
Psalm 112 - We serve the Lord because he has given and done so much for us. All you are and all you have is from him. He just asks that in appreciation you give something back. Buy some groceries for your neighbor that is having a hard time, talk to the elderly lady that needs some company, pray for a friend in need, send a check to help someone else that is doing good works. Praise the Lord.
On this day:
2004 - A couple things on this day. My friend Waynette that I met in confirmation class when we were 12 and have been friends ever since, began attending the church I go to. She practically runs the place now. Its nice to share faith with best friends. The other thing that happened is Kris, Marty's sister came over and helped us move Nicole back to Albion College for her second year. Marty had passed away in the spring from a brain aneurism and Krissy came over to fill in. Good friends.
1996 - U.S. President Clinton signed legislation that ended guaranteed cash payments to the poor and demanded work from recipients. Did this work? anybody know?
Parenting - My daughter went to a seminar this weekend for people to learn more about racial equality. Good timing on this and who better then the church to be working at this?
Book Club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. Clair and Jamie do not believe in owning slaves. The aunt, Jocasta, is hinting that she wants Jamie to take over the plantation that is run by her slaves. In those days, you could not set slaves free, it was against the law. Can't wait to find out what Jamie does.
Cairo Egypt - So much to see and learn here, too bad the area has sunk to such a mess.

Weight training with Denise this morning. "Use it or lose it" "If you rest you rust" are her stock remarks.
Hebrews chapter 10: persevere in faith. We are not faced with the persecution in this country, but there are some in this world who are still dying for their faith - Christians and others a like. They can take your life and your possessions but don't let them take your faith, be confident. There are plenty of things that are stealing faith all around you, don't fall for it. God loves you.
On this day;
2003 - Nicole spent the day with her friend Laura, then everyone came here for pizza, Grandma, Aunt Jan, The Nieto's and Uncle Marty. We loaded his van with all of Nicole's "stuff" and spent the evening answering the phone and saying bye to all the neighbors. She left for college the next day, it still makes me cry.
1923 - In Kalamazoo, Michigan, an ordinance was passed forbidding dancers from gazing into the eyes of their partner. This makes me cry too, with laughter.
Parenting - I was raised in a family that respected the law, no matter what. We were taught that you responded with "yes sir" or "no mam" when speaking to an officer or someone in charge. We had police officers in our circle of friends and later in the family. I believe that we must respect the people that uphold the laws that we have voted into existence. When people lose respect for the basic principals, they lose respect for themselves. I understand that there are bad police officers and people in charge and also there are people that have no respect for the law and believe they are above it. I think, until young black males stop posturing as tough, aggressive assailants in the face of a police officer there will continue to be officers that feel threatened and shoot without hesitation. Lets pray for both sides of this equation.
Book club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. On the river going up to Jamie's Aunt's plantation, they are boarded and robbed by a man whose life they saved. See an example of similar incongruity above.
Cairo Egypt - Gotta see the pyramids! and a camel.

On this day;
2003 - Nicole spent the day with her friend Laura, then everyone came here for pizza, Grandma, Aunt Jan, The Nieto's and Uncle Marty.

August 20, 2014 Wednesday
Kathy Smith and I did some aerobics and cardio this morning.
1 Corinthians chapter 3 - The church and it leaders. That is a loaded topic. The leader is God and we so often forget that. It reminds us that Jesus Christ is the foundation of the church, not the saints and that "for no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Amen.
On this day:
2000 - My sister in law, Jan came over and changed my bathroom faucet. God Bless her. Plumbing and electrical are two things I don't even attempt. When I told her in passing that my faucet leaked she came right over and changed it. My sister Alice recently changed her bathroom and kitchen faucet, so I am seeing a trend here.
1939 - The National Bowling Association was founded in Detroit, MI. It was the first bowling association in the U.S. for African-Americans. Not surprised it was in Detroit, who hasn't bowled?
Parenting - Our inside cat, Nola, must have slipped out the door when Nicole came in from her run last night at 9PM. At 2:30 AM I heard my mom, loudly calling the cat in (yet she said he was right by the door). He came running in, straight to my bedroom and looked at me like it was all my fault and I was a horrible person. He was wet. I have failed as a cat mother.
Book Club - Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon. Jamie and Clair have been offered a choice piece of property by the Governor to begin a plantation. They are wondering if there is a catch.
Cairo Egypt. This place is a hot mess of politics. Lets look at the music. Does it echo the unrest?
Music has been an integral part of Egyptian culture since antiquity. The ancient Egyptians credited one of the powerful gods Hathor with the invention of music, which Osiris in turn used as part of his effort to civilize the world. The earliest material and representational evidence of Egyptian musical instruments dates to the Predynastic period, but the evidence is more securely attested in the Old Kingdom when harps, flutes and double clarinets were played.[1] Percussion instruments, and lutes were added to orchestras by the Middle Kingdom. Cymbals[2] frequently accompanied music and dance, much as they still do in Egypt today. Egyptian folk music, including the traditional Sufi dhikr rituals, are the closest contemporary music genre to ancient Egyptian music, having preserved many of its features, rhythms and instruments.[3][4]
They also played recorders and clarinets. In general, Arabic music is the term used to identify the present music of Egypt. The tonal structure of Arabic music is defined by the maqamat, loosely similar to Western modes, while the rhythm of Arabic music is governed by the awzan (wazn, sing.), formed by combinations of accented and unaccented beats and rests. Typically ancient Egyptian music is composed from the phrygian dominant scale, phrygian scale, Double harmonic scale (Arabic scale) or lydian scale. The phrygian dominant scale may often feature an altered note or two in parts to create tension. For instance the music could typically be in the key of E phrygian dominant using the notes E, F, G sharp, A, B, C, D and then have an A sharp, B, A sharp, G natural and E to create tension.
